3 FROM THE DESK OF DISTRICT GOVERNOR LEN Welcome back to the second half of this Lions Year and the beginning of a new year. One of the good things about a new year is that we are all starting off on the same track. The past is behind us and we cannot change what happened. We can always learn from any mistakes we made and hope not to make them in the future. I always believed that we should leave the past where it should be and continue on into the future. We all make resolutions or changes in our life as we begin a new year. It could be as simple as deciding to improve our health by cutting back or just exercising more. It could be spending more time with our friends and family. One of the things we need to do is realize that we ourselves are responsible for the things we do and others are not to blame for our shortfalls or failures. When we begin a new year there always seems to be emphasis on Our Goals and we hear that at work or at sports functions or in our own homes. What we really mean is our dream of what we would like to see happen to our club, our family, our friends or our hockey team. We have been asked by President Eberhard to Move to Grow. We all know that if we move we will expand and enhance ourselves, our clubs and the communities we serve. We must stretch in our dreams, our plans and our actions. It is vital for the growth of our association and the growth of the significant services we provide to our community. We have just come out of the best month for us as Lions. We have had Christmas parties for seniors, for children, for those who are physically and mentally challenged. We have organized Santa Claus Parades and provided gifts to needy children and adults. We have sold more tickets, held more parties and attended more parties than at any other time of the year. We have fed the hungry and now it is time to ask those we help to help us. We are getting to be an older group of people and we need to have younger people to pass our torch too so that they can help others. We need to say to our communities We have a problem and we need your help. We need people like you to join us, to keep doing the things we have done. We need you to spend a little of your time so that we can continue our work. We need you to help others who thru no fault of their own need our help. If a friend came by we would introduce him/her to our other friends and we are asking you to introduce him/her to your club and if he/she likes what they see they will stay. I ask you to Take the Next Step.

4 I attended a teleconference over the past two weeks with our President and some fellow District Governors and I am pleased to say that membership is increasing in many areas of the country with some districts having huge increases while others have moderate increases. One of the areas that President Eberhard asked all of us to look at is the number of lions who leave us in April, May and June. Let us try to keep the Lions we have as we recruit others. Make a special effort to keep our present Lions by showing them you care about them as people and friends and not just numbers. In this busy world of ours we often overlook the ones who are near and close to us and that relates to family, friends and members in our clubs. We take a lot of things for granted and fail to realize that we do not all think or act the same. We need to have more open communication in our lives and in our clubs. Reminders for successful meetings to enrich the lives of your clubs. Be prompt and start the meeting on time; Make and follow an agenda, keep on schedule; Be just and firm but courteous to all; Let the minority be heard; The majority rules; Allow only one item of business on the floor at one time; The individual s desires must be merged for the good of all; Use business procedures to facilitate action not to obstruct; Keep committees active and effective; Hold regular and purposeful Executive Committee meetings; Adjourn meetings on schedule: Take time for family and friends. Be happy and enjoy what you do. Care for others as you would have them care for you. Say something nice to someone and really mean it. Smile, smile, smile. Yours in Lionism DG Len

5 1 st VICE DISTRICT GOVERNOR S MESSAGE LIGHTING THE WAY THROUGH LIONISM MESSAGE FROM 1 st VDG LEWIS My fellow Lions, by now you have gotten over the holiday partying and all of your Christmas activities such as the Santa Claus Parade, giving to the needy, elderly, shut-ins, etc., are over and you are ready to start your hard work again. We are now into the home stretch and our year is starting to wind down. It only seems like yesterday that our year started. I was reading in the Lions magazine a few days ago that one of the best ways to serve youth is to let them serve. We know that almost all Clubs give monetary donations to youth groups, this is fine and the groups need this funding, but, we should strive to try to get more youth involved and the way to do this is to try to form a Leo Club in your community. Why not have your Youth Services Chairperson talk to the schools and youth groups and get a Leo Club started, after all our youth are our future and we all know our membership is dropping and our future is with our youth. Million Penny Challenge how are we doing with this? I would love to hear about your projects, why not let me know and I can pass your ideas along to the Clubs that are probably just waiting, remember every penny helps. We all have pennies throwing around and can you just imagine the number of pennies every Lion/Lioness and Leo Club in the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador can collect and you are helping the Jewel in the Lions Crown the Lion Max Simms Memorial Camp. Let s get at it and save those pennies. Our second convention will be coming up in a few weeks in St. John s and I hope to see all Lions Clubs represented at this convention. You will notice at the top of the page is a photo of a Lighthouse (Cape Bonavista Lighthouse) which is going to be my pin for the Lions Year This is a very popular tourist site in our great Province and is located in my Town. This historic lighthouse has been lighting the way for mariners for years and I thought why not have this Lighthouse light the way through Lionism. It will be modified slightly, but, never the less this will be my pin. I hope to see you all in St. John s. All the best Lewis

6 2 ND VICE DISTRICT GOVERNOR S MESSAGE Hello Fellow Lions I trust you all had a wonderful Christmas, spent some special time with your families, some time to stop and reflect back on 2009, what you did to make life a little better for persons less fortunate than yourselves and what changes we can make in the new year. Ruth and I wish each and every one a Happy New Year. We hope the new year will be good to you; will be everything you hoped it could be. I see from your reports we are recruiting some new Lions. I just recently received a phone call from Bay L'Argent Lions Club saying they had initiated 4 new members! Congratulations! I encourage membership committees to keep up the good work! Your projects are going good and I congratulate all clubs. I would also like to congratulate Lion Bruce Grandy from Garnish Lions Club on becoming a member of the MERL Team. Good show Lion Bruce! I was asked on several occasions what my thoughts were on 1st VDG remarks on Spouse's Travel to incoming District Governor's International Convention. I agree with him 100%. When we agreed to become DG's we were unaware of this expense. We knew there would be an expense, but not to this magnitude. Personally I feel the District should pay for the spouse of the incoming District Governor to attend the International Convention and not the spouse of the outgoing District Governor. The incoming is the most important in my opinion. It should be entirely up to the DG if he/she would like their spouse to attend the International Convention at the end of the term. If this is any indication of the changes coming it won't be too long before the average Lion will not be able to participate on this level. Once again, I would like to wish everyone a Happy and Prosperous New Year and I hope to see you all at the Convention in February. Yours in Lionism Lion Morgan Pardy 2nd Vice District Governor

7 LCIF Responds to Haiti Earthquake Dear Lions A powerful 7.0 earthquake ravished the island nation of Haiti on the evening of Tuesday, January 12. Much of the capital city of Port-au-Prince has been destroyed. It's estimated that 3 million people, nearly one-third of the country's population, has been affected by the earthquake. The casualty numbers are not known at this time, but significant loss of life is feared. Rescue efforts remain ongoing at this time. LCIF is responding to the Haiti earthquake. We are in contact with Lions leadership in the area to assess the situation and determine immediate relief needs. A US$50,000 Major Catastrophe Grant has already been awarded to support immediate disaster relief efforts. When catastrophes occur, LCIF and Lions answer the call for help. I have seen first hand the impact large-scale devastation has on communities. Homes, schools, hospitals are destroyed and lives are often lost. Through our efforts, we are able to bring hope and healing, even if it's just a little bit, to people who are in such desperate need. I ask that you help support LCIF disaster relief efforts in Haiti by making a contribution. A designated fund, "LCIF Haiti Earthquake Relief", has been established for donations for this disaster. It's through Lions' commitment to serving those in need that those suffering from the earthquake's devastation will receive some sense of normalcy. Yours in Lionism, Al Brandel LCIF Chairperson

The usual Friday Night Meet and Greet with a dance and pizza. We will be placing pizzas on each table, again to avoid a long line up. It is illegal to take any alcoholic beverage on the elevators/stairways as this is considered a public area. If NLC were to come in during our convention and this was happening it would result in a fine for the Hotel and the cancellation of our weekend. Please do not let this happen. 15 FROM THE PR CORNER Here we are in 2010!!!!! How many times have you heard that phrase in the past couple of weeks? This is a great example of repetition imprinting something in the minds of the public. As if we needed something to remind us that we are in the next decade, but just about everyone who addresses the public in print or the electronic media uses some version of that phrase. The human race has celebrated the beginning of the New Year for centuries, but in the last century it has grown to monumental proportions. Why do you think that there is such a hoopla about celebrating the New Year? Is part of the reason for such growth because the mass media has picked up on it? In the past few years our International Presidents, District Governors and others within the Lions family have been telling Lions to get out there and blow our own horns. Tell the public about all the good things that Lions do in their communities and beyond. We cannot hope to become mentioned in the media as often as the New Year, but if we could keep getting out to the public with the information about what we are doing we probably would not be having the membership problem we are currently experiencing. Lions International has launched a program to encourage Lions to come out of their Den and get more information out to the public. The program is entitled Lions In Sight and DG Len has recently sent a number of articles to Club Presidents to help them get something moving in their Communities. January is Lions in Sight month so there is still time to do something. You may think that you have to have access to newspapers, radio and TV to do any kind of effective Public Relations. This could not be further from the truth. Clubs are only limited by the imagination of the members. Discuss it at your next meeting and see how many ideas the members can come up with. Make a list of the things that your Club has been involved in this year. Start your discussion with talking about a flyer to send out to the residents of your community, this can easily be done on a home computer and is not expensive. You could host a community appreciation breakfast or an open house having displays of the things that you are involved in. You can get involved with the local school, help out and be visible at school functions. Review your monthly Activities Reports for ideas. These are some ideas that came from a recent discussion at an Alexander Bay Lions Club meeting. A committee has now been put in place to have something done before the end of January. Why not try something similar in your Club? There are ways to get the information out there and it doesn t matter how small your Club or community is you can do this. You can get out of your Den and become Lions in Sight Ron Pond PR Chair District N4

16 MESSAGE FROM LION MING Dear Lion Ron, good day! After being home from my biking across this great country, I have been receiving many a high reputation and encouragement from local lions clubs and friends and local newspapers and TVs for my biking adventure to help those children who are under privilege. Totally about CAD$12, 000 I raised on the way (about NT$ 360,000) were donated out to Taiwan Fund for Children and Families (T.F.C.F.) and World Vision and those survivals in Typhoon Morakot this August. Recently I have been very regret for my hard disk data which contains pictures I took on the way my biking across Canada this summer time being lost!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It was damaged so seriously after 45-day emergency rescue here, but in vain. It's really quite invaluable to me. But even much more money costs me only it could be recovered, that I would accept and pay. One of my brother's friend was back home Cleveland, Ohio some days ago, I asked him take it to a local Data Recovery Company for seeking the last opportunity to rescue. They say "no data, no money". I eagerly expect to. As you know, all the data would be very helpful for me to complete my travelling book "Biking across Canada", or it would be somewhat hard to write. Say "Hello" to the other lions, I always miss them. Everything is OK for me except my disk data. Best regards Lion Ming-Jiing

17 THE ANNUAL LION MAX SIMMS MEMORIAL CAMP PROVINCIAL DART TOURNAMENT The Annual Lion Max Simms Memorial Camp Provincial Dart Tournament is scheduled for March 19 to 21, The format will be the same as last year, whereby each Zone is eligible to send a representative team. The team may be the Zone champions as decided by a Zone/Region tournament, or the makeup of the team may be by some other means. This is totally at the discretion of the clubs in the Zone. We would like to see each Zone in the two Districts send a team to the Provincials. This will give more Lions and Lioness a chance to participate. It is suggested that each Zone hold their Zone tournament in January or February. All funds raised by these tournaments should be submitted to your respective Fund Raising Chair, Lion Walter Snow or Lion Jim Hayley. The name and composition (# of males, # of females, # of couples) of the team representing each Zone must be submitted to the undersigned by February 28, 2010, to facilitate planning of accommodations, etc. Please note that failure to advise the undersigned that your Zone will be represented could mean that no accommodations will be available for your team. THIS IS IMPORTANT. As you are aware accommodations at the Camp are limited to the number of rooms we have and we regret that only dart players and those working the tournament can be accommodated on this weekend. Teams must restrict themselves to the maximum of six players attending the tournament. A copy of the Tournament rules is listed for your information. If you have any questions or suggestions on any aspect of the tournament please contact the undersigned. If your Zone or team can provide a prize or prizes for fundraising it would be appreciated. Good luck with your Zone tournaments and remember the big winners are the Special people who use our Camp each year. Yours in Lionism Michael Foote P.O. 19 Clarenville Lions Club President, Janet Abbott (R) presents a cheque for US$1, to Past District Governor Lion Joan Forward on behalf of Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) to be designated for the relief of Haitian earthquake victims. LCIF has been in contact with Lions in Haiti, as well as in neighbouring Latin American countries and Lions Leadership in the area, to assess the situation and determine immediate needs and how Lions throughout the world and LCIF can best assist. LCIF has awarded a US$50, Major Catastrophe Grant for local Lions to help provide for immediate needs of victims of the devastating earthquake. It is important to note that 100% of all donations made to LCIF are directed towards the assistance of victims of disasters such as this. HEARING AND SPEECH UPDATE Congratulations are extended to the Pouch Cove Lions Club who recently resolved to put a total of 1,016 HUSH UPS on all classroom chairs at Cape St. Francis Elementary in Pouch Cove. Great work fellow Lions. HUSH UPS are air inflated, noise absorbing balls that are specially manufactured to be placed on the bottoms of movable chairs and tables. While these balls resemble tennis balls, they are much more efficient in deadening classroom noise caused by scraping chairs. The reduction of classroom noise increases academic achievement, improves concentration and participation of all children, especially those who are hard of hearing. 20 DIABETES AWARENESS Hello there Fellow Lions and Happy New Year. This is Lion Michael Foote, your District Chair for Diabetes Awareness. Just writing you to say that I haven t received many reports on what clubs are doing. Up to date I have received reports on clubs doing projects with the proceeds going towards the Canadian Diabetes Association, from public card games to ticket sales inside the club. Unfortunately I have only received one report of a club doing a clothing drive, the Baccalieu Lions Club. It was there second annual clothes drive for the Canadian Diabetes Association. This year they collected twice as much as they did last year, with a total of 200 combined bags of clothing. In my eyes this was a very worthwhile project. It is very easy to do, all you need to do is set up a drop off place and time or even pick a day and go around your area collecting. Do up some posters and place them around your area. The biggest thing is having somewhere to store it. For more information on this or ideas feel free to contact me. My contact info is in the directory. The Marystown Lions throw off another great project that is done in our great district for the Canadian Diabetes Association, a NIGHT GOLF TOURNAMENT. This is a very unique project. I have been able to attend it the past couple of years and I have to say it is a wonderful time. They start out at the clubhouse at the Grand Meadows Golf Club in Frenchman s Cove. With your registration you get your round of golf, glow in the dark golf ball, flashing neckband and all you can eat in bar-be-q hot dogs and hamburgers. Speaking from experience it is a great time and worth the visit. I have also included information on one of the Canadian Diabetes Association s projects that they do for fundraising. If you want to get updates from the Canadian Diabetes Association sign up for their e-letter at Don t forget your donations, THE MORE YOU GIVE, THE MORE WE GIVE BACK TO YOUR AREA.

Additional opportunities include hiking the Grand Canyon and mountain biking and cycling. You don t have to be an athlete to sign up! Team Diabetes prepares you for the physical challenge and provides you with the support you need to achieve your fundraising goals. Team Diabetes participants are role models in their local communities and expose the reality of diabetes and the significance of the cause throughout Canada and abroad. Since 2000, they have created lifestyle changes that reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes while raising funds in support of the Canadian Diabetes Association. We are currently recruiting participants for Reykjavik & Rio de Janeiro. For more information on this very exciting program please contact Tom Sullivan, , ext. 3241, or tom.sullivan@diabetes.ca
