2 Join us to lead change for better brain health. I joined Palm Healthcare Foundation in March of 2017 and am passionate about the foundation s vision for Palm Beach County. We believe that all of our residents should have an opportunity to reach their full health potential and thrive. Palm Healthcare Foundation, Inc. is Palm Beach County s leading community foundation for health. With the support of donors and a focus on results, the foundation builds strong community partnerships, advocates for our most vulnerable neighbors and inspires innovative solutions to lead change for better health for generations to come. I have had a lifelong interest in the role that our brains play in our overall health. The more we learn about the brain, the more we understand just how dependent our health is on this amazing, complex organ. While we have learned and developed good daily habits to take care of other parts of our bodies, few of us pay attention to our brain health, let alone adopt daily brain health habits. Brain health affects everyone. In Palm Beach County, too many of our children are not ready for kindergarten, having missed critical opportunities in brain development from birth to age five. Brain disorders, including opioid addiction, are claiming hundreds of lives each year. Almost all of us know a person or family that has been weighed down by mental health issues. Many of our aging neighbors and family members deal with deteriorating brain function. The good news is that brain health has been receiving a lot of attention recently. Among researchers and clinicians, there is growing consensus about the importance of taking care of our brains in order to achieve optimum health and wellbeing. And, South Florida is attracting world class talent to address brain health! Now is the time to put a spotlight on this important health issue. The foundation is launching a $1 million fundraising with a goal to advance brain health in Palm Beach County through exciting new programs and innovations. From building brain fitness to saving lives, Palm Healthcare Foundation is committed to leading change for better brain health. We cannot do this alone. We need your help. 3 According to the National Institute on Mental Health, 1 in 4 people have a mental health disorder. In Palm Beach County, that translates to approximately 330,000 people. Even more alarming, a recent article in Scientific American estimates that 80% of us will develop a diagnosable mental illness at some point in our lives. In Palm Beach County 25% of calls to 211 Helpline in 2016 were for mental health and addiction issues (more than any other category) 590 opioid overdose deaths in 2016, more than doubling the deaths in the prior year 46% of children in high-risk, low-income communities are not kindergarten ready 49 th Florida s ranking in funding for behavioral health 25% increase in suicides since % of high school students reported sadness and hopelessness that was strong enough to interrupt normal, day-to-day activities

4 Our brains communicate with our bodies in very sophisticated ways. As understanding of the critical interplay between our brain and other systems in our body increases, it will change our approach to brain health and provide valuable insight into better treatment and prevention of many mental health disorders. We have established the Palm Healthcare Foundation Brain Health Advisory Council, a group of national and local experts on brain health, to explore new technologies and treatments; recommend resources and educational tools; advocate for those with mental health conditions and inform our funding decisions. CHIP is a product of the Florida Department of Health in Palm Beach County, Health Care District of Palm Beach County and Health Council of Southeast Florida.
