CHAPTER PROGRAMS STAR AWARD CANDIDATE INFORMATION SHEET Name of Candidate: Michael Fullerton Address: 8819 Pinnacle Valley Road Phone: (501) Chapter: Arkansas Region: VIII Sponsor (Nominator) of Candidate Bill Simpson 1. CHAPTER TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER COMMITTEE (CTTC) MEMBERS: a. Did you have a Chapter Technology Transfer Committee? Yes b. How many members? 7 c. Describe their responsibilities: Plan programs that offer value to chapter members. Implement sustainable practices and promote sustainability at chapter meetings. Coordinate with Northwest Section. Plan continuing education opportunities. Coordinate efforts in government affairs and refrigeration. Find quality projects to be submitted for Technical Awards and Refrigeration Awards. Coordinate and plan refrigeration tours. Plan Past President's Night. 2. PROGRAM CHAIR TRAINING: a. Did you attend CRC Chapter Technology Transfer Chair training? Yes/No Yes Date of CRC Training? April 2011 b. Was the training helpful? Yes c. Comments: I would recommend more emphasis on the technology awards and refrigeration awards. A greater knowledge of the report requirements would help our chapters and region be more competitive at the society level. 3. PROGRAM PLANNING a. Were Chapter Programs planned for the year and published in the first Chapter Year Newsletter? Yes - See below for a full list of programs and speakers.
List each Program planned and published in Chapter Year Newsletter: Month Speaker Topic Regular Special September Tim Gorman Bio-Renewable Fuels Regular October John Bethel Energy Programs at AR Regular Public Service Commission October Clark Reed ASHE Energy Survey for Hospitals Special November Dean Saputa UV-C for Controlling Mold Regular for AHUs December Ron Jarnagin Sustaining ASHRAE Regular Through Leadership January Tom Hanlon/ NEBB Educational & Regular Bill Harrison Training Outreach February Jerry Sossaman Basic Steam Engineering Princ Regular March Phil Smith Energy Dashboards Regular April Hamid Habibi ASHRAE 62.1 Update Regular May Bill Simpson Past President's Night Special b. Was the advance planning successful or were changes necessary? The advanced planning was successful. Some minor changes were made. Please explain changes Jon Lye, our speaker for the Basic Steam Engineering Principles, had a last minute scheduling conflict. We were able to secure Jerry Sossaman a couple of days before the meeting to give this presentation. c. If Special (Professional Development or ASHRAE Learning Institute) sessions were planned (3 hours or more), what was the attendance at each? Our chapter cosponsored the well-attended full day NEBB seminar. The ASHRAE/NEBB recertification seminar had approximately 75 people in attendance. We had a three day training session on Robert s Rules of Order. The Robert's Rules of Order training had approximately 12 people in attendance. We also hosted the ASHRAE Dedicated Outdoor Air Systems webcast and supported the efforts of our local USGBC chapter on their very successful Sustainable Arkansas event. The ASHRAE Dedicated Outdoor Air Systems webcast had approximately 18 people in attendance. In addition to these continuing education seminars, we had a tour of the Arkansas Multi-Agency Complex (MAC). The MAC building s innovative central plant design drastically reduced the natural gas and electricity consumption of the building. The MAC tour had approximately 30 people in attendance. Comments We provide professional development hour certificates for all of our regular chapter programs as well as continuing ed seminars. d. Comment on the Best Program for the year? Our "Best Program" for the year was Basic Engineering Steam Principles by Jerry Sossaman. The Arkansas chapter is primarily comprised of young engineers. Steam is becoming more and more of a past art in our industry. Other than using steam for humidification, we do not use much steam. This program was more on the lines of a mini-continuing education seminar. Jerry's talk discussed the basics of steam trap selection, design, and installation. He also provided information on sizing steam pressure reducing stations. I had several of the members tell me that the program was very interesting and informational. A close second for the "Best Program" was President Ron Jarnagin giving his Sustaining ASHRAE Through Leadership message and the update on ASHRAE 62.1 and 90.1 from Hamid Habibi. All in all, it is very tough to select just one program that was the best.
4. PRESIDENTIAL AWARD OF EXCELLENCE (PAOE) PERFORMANCE Identify the PAOE performance of your chapter in the Region? Highest Ranking Chapter Mexico City Number of PAOE Points 4850 Second Highest Ranking Chapter Arkansas Number of PAOE Points 3275 Third Highest Ranking Chapter Monterrey Number of PAOE Points CHAPTER MEMBERSHIP MEETING ATTENDANCE a. Which program had the highest attendance? January - NEBB Educational Training and Outreach Tom Hanlon/Bill Harrison Reason: Our January meeting had the highest attendance for a multitude of reasons. This meeting was our annual joint meeting with the Construction Specifications Institute (CSI). We also had high attendance because of the speakers. Both Tom Hanlon and Bill Harrison are teaching icons in our area. Tom Hanlon was the president of the local NEBB chapter. He is also very active in Habitat for Humanity and ASHRAE as the TEGA chair. Bill Harrison has been very active in ASHRAE for a long time. He is a past society president. When you combine the knowledge of these two individuals into one presentation, the results are amazing. b. Did the average chapter meeting attendance increase year over year? Prior Year Average Attendance: 93 Current Year Average Attendance: 107 Current Year Assigned Members: 287 Percent increase in average attendance: FEEDBACK: (Optional) You have been selected as a candidate for the CTTC Chapter Program Star Award because of your effectiveness in promoting ASHRAE programs. We are very interested in your comments and suggestions on how the Society Chapter Technology Transfer Committee could be more effective: It would be great if we could hear what other Regions are doing to promote ASHRAE and raise funds for ASHRAE Research. CRC is a great resource for hearing what our Region is doing for ASHRAE. It would be nice to expand beyond the vacuum of our Region. Also, partnering with other organizations such as USGBC, AIA, BOMA, ASHE, SAME, CSI, Habitat for Humanity, etc. on a society level could promote joint meetings. Meetings with these organizations at a local level would be very beneficial in promoting ASHRAE programs.
CTT ACCOMPLISMENTS The Arkansas Chapter Technology Transfer Committee worked hard this year toward its number one goal of providing value to the chapter members. With the belief that providing top-notch programs at meetings is the catalyst to developing and sustaining a strong chapter, the committee focused on bringing in leaders from around the industry to present timely and pertinent topics. As such, our chapter brought in several key presenters from around the country for our programs. These speakers traveled to both Little Rock to present to us plus the 400 additional miles to Springdale and back for our NWA section meetings. We were very fortunate and thankful to have hosted several esteemed speakers, most notably society President Ron Jarnagin who presented his presidential theme on sustaining ASHRAE through leadership. We also had Past President Bill Harrison present jointly with Tom Hanlon on NEBB educational & training outreach with a focus on commissioning and DRC John Harrod updated us on the happenings throughout society and the region. Bio-renewable Fuels by Tim Gorman Energy Efficiency Programs at Arkansas Public Service Commission by John Bethel ASHE Energy Survey for Hospitals by Clark Reed UV-C for Controlling Mold in AHUs by Dean Saputa Sustaining ASHRAE Through Leadership by Ron Jarnagin NEBB Educational & Training Outreach by Tom Hanlon and Bill Harrison Basic Steam Engineering Principles by Jerry Sossaman Energy Dashboards by Phil Smith ASHRAE 62.1 and 90.1 Update by Hamid Habibi The emphasis on programs paid off with chapter record meeting attendance of 107 people per month (a 15% increase over last year). The Central Arkansas section saw a boosted attendance with an average of 64 people as did the NWA section with an average of 43 people per meeting. The feedback from attendees was very positive with those responding to our surveys ranking meetings at 8.8 out of 10 based on topic relevance, presentation quality and adherence to ASHRAE s non-commercialism policy. Also, to reward attendance, our chapter offered PDH certificates at every technical meeting. Reaching out to other industry societies, we had joint meetings this year with CSI and AAHE. We were very fortunate to get an update from the ASHRAE 62.1 and 90.1 technical committee member Hamid Habibi. Our last meeting of the year was the annual Past Presidents Night social program and RP fundraiser on May 3 at the Arkansas Repertory Theater. We had a great turnout to honor our Past Presidents. We also setup a table to display all the CRC awards to celebrate the hard work of our chapter leadership. The Arkansas Chapter wanted to show its commitment to sustainability, so in addition to providing a curriculum on sustainability, we reflected those values in our meetings themselves. Again this year we hosted all of the Central Arkansas meetings at Camp Aldersgate, a centrally located LEED Gold facility, where our lease fees benefit a non-profit camp for special needs children. Our chapter encourages attendees to carpool to the meetings by making carpoolers eligible for a raffle each month. Prizes have ranged from $20 to model windmills to residential UV-C lights. The Arkansas Chapter also showed its commitment to sustainability by teaming up with Habitat for Humanity. In May, we teamed up on a Saturday to work on one of the houses that the Habitat for Humanity had in progress. We showed improvement in continuing education in with five technical events in addition to our regular meetings. Our chapter cosponsored the well-attended full day NEBB seminar. We had a three day training session on Robert s Rules of Order. In addition to these continuing education seminars, we had a tour of the Arkansas Multi-Agency Complex (MAC). The MAC building s innovative central plant design drastically reduced the natural gas and electricity consumption of the building. We also hosted the ASHRAE Dedicated Outdoor Air Systems webcast and supported the efforts of our local USGBC chapter on their very successful Sustainable Arkansas event.
Several of our members heeded our society and chapter presidents calls to action with four members receiving ASHRAE certifications (two BEMP and two CPMP) and eight people renewing their existing certifications this year. Our chapter has continued to stay very active with advocacy. Our October program was presented by John Bethel, director of the Arkansas Public Service Commission. With the help of Mark Wills at society, our Chapter President Bill Simpson was able to get Governor Mike Beebe to officially declare National Engineers Week in Arkansas from February We also have members dutifully serving on state committees and boards and have had chapter members promote ASHRAE related topics (including 189.1) to various government officials and entities at least 28 times. Three of our members submitted technical award applications for their innovative projects at the Chapter and Regional level. Our chapter recognized these applicants at our April meeting by awarding framed certificates. Michael Fullerton submitted TMC Phase 2 Cooling in the Existing Health Care Facilities Division. James Hess submitted Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality in the New Commercial Buildings Division. Chris Galloway submitted PEC-GED Complex Camp Joseph T Robinson in the New Educational Facilities Division. In addition, all three of the projects will be submitted for society awards. We also had one Comfort Cooling Award Submission to Society. Michael Fullerton submitted The Medical Center Phase 2 Cooling Heat Pump Chiller project. SIGNED: Michael Fullerton DATE: 06/13/2012
