1 Annual Report 2013
2 STRATEGIC GOALS 2013 The 2013 goals for TRI: expand programming improve organizational operations. The objectives to reach those goals: new program location; build partnerships with others who serve same population, increased service programming to include At Risk Youth and Veterans, addition of horses and equipment, addition of volunteers, addition of staff, continued growth and improvement of Board of Directors and nonprofit program operations. The long range objective for TRI programming is: to provide Equine Assisted therapeutic activity as defined in PATH Intl. Standards as activities from which a participant derives benefit. Mission Statement: To improve the lives and health of children and adults in Southwest Ohio with special physical, cognitive, social, and psychological needs through Equine Assisted Activities and Therapies (EAAT) PROGRAM ACCOMPLISHMENTS TRI expanded the number of classes offered from 41 in 2012 to 52 in 2013 at our new facility at FineLine Stables. TRI held 6 volunteer trainings in 2013 bringing our volunteer base up from 125 to approximately 200. TRI officially welcomed 3 new PATH Certified Riding Instructors to our team, Michele Green, Kindra Ropp and Christine Pirot. Reinstituted our program serving At-Risk-Youth through the development of a collaborative partnership with South Community. TRI is pushing towards the full integration of our Horses Assisting Heroes (HAH) program serving Veterans. In 2013, the Levin Foundation awarded $2800 to purchase a horse large enough to serve our Veterans and we look forward to building this program. LETTER FROM 2013 CHAIR When I think about all that happened with our organization in 2013, it astounds me. This year was certainly a thrilling ride! With the move to FineLine Stables, the addition of staff members, new horses, new Board Members, more volunteers, special events and on and on. It proves that no matter how old you are, there is always room for growth and positive change. This positive change was led by Executive Director, Marleen Milkis. TRI and Marleen took a leap of faith in We promised to support each other heart and soul to see if it was the right fit. She was walking in to an organization that had grown beyond its capacity and was without solid structure, and we were nervous about hiring a non-horse person who had never worked for a group like ours. But I can tell you that this has been a God send for TRI. Marleen has brought the professional concepts that are seen in the best non-profits across the country. She had developed a strong Board of Directors who are capable of overseeing all the business aspects of running the organization, and she has empowered our staff to make the changes that they have been yearning to make. The trust between the staff is getting stronger by the day. With this trust we are seeing people blossom into roles that they never thought they could. TRI staff and volunteers are passionate about what they are doing which is creating positive energy and a natural capacity for excellence. I feel confident stepping out of the board room and back into the riding arena. I know that the team we have assembled will continue to grow our program while always staying true to who we are and from where we have come. Our mission has been the same for the past 40 years and it will continue to be the same for many years to come. Excellence in therapeutic horseback riding that enables our riders and volunteers to live fuller lives with joy in the horse to human relationship. See you at the barn, Kathy Corbett Past Board Chair
3 GOVERNANCE TRI welcomed 5 new Board Members: Scott Barker, Partner at Barker, Beck, Collins and Kraunage Agency; David Carpenter, Sr. Occupational Risk Mgr at USAF School of Aero Space Medicine; Jerry Durst, CFO Hospice of Dayton; and Sarah Howdeshelt, Accountant at Dayton Power and Light and Lezley Pisone, Major Gifts Officer at Goodwill Easter Seals Miami Valley. Two TRI veterans: Heidi McKenna and Terri Glenn, remain on the Board. TRI added a Part Time Development Associate, Christine Pirot. In 2013, TRI was awarded $53,000 in grants FriendRaiser Event was reinstated and brought in $52,000 Established 2014 Strategic Plan with 3 main goals: Information Management Staff assessment for the future Policies and procedure implementation PATH INTL. PREMIER ACCREDITATION In January 2011, the Board of the Therapeutic Riding Institute, Inc. proudly announced the receipt of PATH Intl. Premier Accredited Center designation. Since 1969, PATH Intl. (Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship International), originally known as the North American Riding for the Handicapped Association (NARHA), has been recognized as the driving force behind equine-assisted activities and therapies in North America. TRI s achievement indicates that all PATH Intl. Standards criteria related to the lesson program (volunteer training, horse care and training, and instructor certification); administration, are met BOARD OF DIRECTORS Kathy Corbett 2013 Chair, term ended 12/2013 Judy Young 2013 Treasurer, term ended 12/2013 Scott Barker Governance Committee Sarah Howdeshelt 2014 Vice Chair Jerry Durst Finance Committee Chair David Carpenter Governance Committee Heidi McKenna Program Chair Terri Glenn 2014 Chair Lezley Pisone Development Committee Barb Morsa term ended 9/2013 Linda Lightcap Chris Koogler Jeanette Dehus Josh representing TRI at the Dayton Horse Show Hi my name is Josh and I ve been riding with TRI for about 4 years. What TRI means to me is that all the other barns that actually do lessons, they don t accommodate people like me. They wouldn t just accommodate because I have shorter legs, or because I have Dwarfism. TRI has allowed me to ride even though I have disabilities.
4 FROM 2014 BOARD CHAIR On behalf of the Board of Directors, we are all looking forward to 2014 and the ability to extend additional class opportunities to our TRI students. This organization saw many changes in 2013, and is propelled forward by the momentum associated with a new facility, new horses and additional staff. This year we hope to build our infrastructure within the program and continue to build partnerships with individuals and businesses found in Southwest Ohio. Collaborative relationships will allow us to enhance our programs serving both children and adults with unique needs. The Horses Assisting Heroes (HAH) initiative will provide greater opportunities for Veterans in the area as we recruit Veteran volunteers to participate with our Veteran riders in the program. Horses Assisting Youth (HAY) for At-Risk-Youth will continue to grow through our partnerships formed in 2013 with mental health facilities and public schools. Our 6 certified instructors and our 200 volunteers will be offered opportunities to develop their horsemanship skills and their knowledge base of the many diagnoses our clients bring to our classes. Everyone associated with this great organization has expressed and continues to express their excitement for the future of TRI. I am sure 2014 will prove to be a year of opportunity to further support our students, families, and our community. 5 Jamie on Boo with Volunteers Tink, Dave and Heidi at the Fall Horse Show. From Jill Pohl, mother of TRI Student, Jamie Pohl: We ve been riding with TRI since I keep bringing Jamie back because it gives her confidence, control and independence. TRI is a community of caring staff and devoted volunteers. It is a well-run organization that cares for individuals with special needs and provides a very unique experience for these individuals giving my daughter and other children and adult skills and confidence that they aren t always given because of their circumstance. TRI is an incredible program that gives so much to its riders and has greatly impacted my daughter and our entire family. From TRI Volunteer, Tink McTaggart: I volunteer with TRI because I love people and children and I believe that TRI really helps the students gain confidence while also helping to improve their balance and physical abilities. Another reason I volunteer for TRI is because it s always good to give back It s hard to put into words the feeling you get when you see the smile on the children s faces when they have achieved something and they are just so proud of themselves when they are able to do something by themselves.
