2 Statements & Search Criteria Mission REACHcycles is a non-profit service organization dedicated to creating mobility and independence for children and veterans with disabilities. Background REACHcycles is an all volunteer 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to creating mobility and independence to children with disabilities. REACHcycles was established in 2014, as a chapter of AMBUCS a national organization, founded in AMBUCS has been providing numerous AmTrykes (adapted cycles) for a long time to many within the mobility challenged community nationwide. Disabled Veteran and REACHcycles President, James Howard, received a therapeutic cycle from an AMBUCS chapter in Lubbock, Texas in a bike ride sponsored for disabled veterans and others. The Little Red Dog Foundation Chapter, Beaufort, SC was the driving force behind coordinating and adapting the cycle so James could participate in this event. This AmTryke provided him a new level of freedom and recreational therapy which led him to assist Ambucs as a veterans liaison to support other veterans in receiving similar cycles. This also led his mother, Nancy Wellons, to start her own chapter, Wheels On The James ( in Lynchburg Va. All of these organizations have played a valuable role in inspiring this new REACHcycles Chapter in Richmond. Impact REACHcycles provides an average of 75 adapted bikes and many other durable medical equipments needs on a yearly basis. We are an all volunteer unpaid staff. AMBUCS chapters have expended thousands of hours and millions of dollars for community service projects in support of the mission. To date, over 15,000 AmTryke therapeutic tricycles have been distributed worldwide. The vast majority of these trykes are purchased by volunteer members of the AMBUCS organization or charitable partners and donated free of charge to facilities and recipients. For over 50 years, National AMBUCS, Inc. has been awarding scholarships to physical and occupational therapy, and speech language pathologist and hearing audiology students leading to a master s or doctoral degree. Over 13,000 educational grants have been given. Chapters perform community service projects in support of the mission, with ramp building - making homes accessible - a growing volunteer program. Needs REACHcycles needs funding for over 100 riders within the community. These are riders who do not have local community support at this time and are denied this much needed benefit through insurance. These riders can normally wait up to one year for their AmTryke Therapeutic tricycle, while funds are raised. REACHcycles has developed a successful model to serve the community. Funds are needed to take this model to a much larger scale to serve more within the community. CEO/Executive Director Statement With the support of this great Richmond community we plan on providing independence and mobility to numerous disabled children in the area. Our staff and board members are all volunteers that take a personal interest in seeing these children experience the amazing freedom of riding a bike that we can sometimes take for granted. Board Chair Statement REACHcycles programs are about abilities, not disabilities. We believe in promoting mobility and independence for children and veterans with disabilities by providing small but vital services at the community level. REACHcycles focuses on those items that go unfunded by government or health insurance. Our volunteers work "shoulders together" to make communities better. 4 Programs Programs AmTryke Therapeutic Tricycles Description AmTryke Therapeutic Tricycles are provided to people with disabilities who cannot ride regular bicycles. AmTrykes provide mobility and independence for riders. the tricycles promote fitness and better health for riders. AmTrykes are provided free for those unable to afford the purchase of equipment. REACHcycles has provided over 65 riders with AmTrykes since inception. The program is financed through fundraising efforts and other charitable partners. Budget $120, Long term Success Short Term Success REACHcycles has provided over 65 AmTrykes to people with disabilities. This program promotes health and fitness, age appropriate exercise, freedom, independence and mobility, plus increased self esteem for a wide range of people. Almost every diagnosis group has benefitted including cerebral palsy, spina bifida, downs syndrome, autism, and developmental disabilities. The AmTryke program is growing dramatically, with over 65 riders served last year. We also serve wounded or injured soldiers and veterans. Ramp Building - Community Service Description Popular volunteer activities include ramp building and other projects in support of people with disabilities Budget $20, Scholarships for Therapists Description REACHcycles is dedicated to awarding scholarships to therapy students in their junior/senior year in a bachelor s degree program, or a graduate program leading to a master s or doctoral degree. The focus is primarily on physical and occupational therapy, speech language pathology, and hearing audiology students. Budget $5, Long term Success Since 1955, AMBUCS Scholarships for Therapists program has provided over 13,544 scholarships totaling $7,309, to physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech language pathology students. 4

6 Management Executive Director/CEO Executive Director Mr. James Howard Term Start June Experience James Howard, CPT, USA (ret.): James grew up in Lynchburg, Va and graduated from the Virginia Military Institute in 2002 with distinction in Civil Engineering. He commissioned in the Army having the privilege to serve at Ft Bragg with the 82nd airborne and Special Forces training. He served overseas were he was injured a couple times in combat and at the end of his career suffered a tragic service connected accident that left him paralyzed as a quadriplegic. His injury has been a blessing by misfortune which led him to start 2 non-profits, REACHcycles and Veterans and Athletes United, that support children and veterans with disabilities.
