2 Mission & Impact Statements Mission To inspire the lives of people with life challenges through the benefits of equine assisted activities that promote treatment of emotional, behavioral, social, mental and physical needs. Background The concept of the therapeutic value of horse-related activities arrived in the United States in the 1940s. Leg Up is just one of many like centers across the country. An all-volunteer facility, Leg Up provides private and group lessons for individuals 4 years of age or older who are physically, behaviorally, and/or developmentally challenged. Benefits of participation include normalization of muscle tone, increased strength and endurance and, improved balance and posture. Educational goals such as letter recognition and sequencing can be incorporated into riding activities. Riding encourages students to develop their social skills as well as to learn empathy, trust, respect and awareness. Improvement in an individual's level of self-esteem and the feeling of accomplishment are significant benefits of program participation. The center is open for instruction five days a week during spring, summer and fall sessions. Leg Up is a member in good standing of PATH, Intl., (formerly the North American Riding for the Handicapped Association(NARHA), a regulatory agency that has developed standards for instructor certification, site accreditation and program monitoring. There is currently three PATH, Intl. Certified Therapeutic Riding Instructor on staff. Impact Leg Up is an all volunteer organization that has been in operation since In 2015 we served 25 riders. We have 61 active volunteers that have logged in over 5000 volunteer hours. Leg Up has been a Premier PATH Center since We have developed partnerships with organizations like the Nashville Predators, Martin Methodist College and is supported by our local businesses, civic groups and youth groups (United States Pony Club, 4-H, and the Giles County Youth Leadership) Our goals for the current year include: increase the number of people that we serve, recruit and retain volunteers, increase the number of certified PATH instructors to broaden and strengthen our program.. As we deepen our existing relations with donors and develop new partnerships to strengthen our base of funding support. We will be upgrading the arena, developing a Sensory Trail and maintaining the LUTRC facility. Needs 1. To collaborate, educate and offer new choices in therapy to individual's with special needs in our service area. Sensory Trail($3,000).2. Improve footing for the arena and add overhead lighting to the arena ($15,000); 3. Paint the barn ($1,500); 4. 3 Areas of Service Areas Served TN - Giles TN - Lawrence TN - Lincoln TN - Marshall Serving the Tennessee counties of Giles, Lincoln, Lawrence and Marshall as well as the Alabama counties of Madison, Morgan, Limestone and Lauderdale. Board Chair Statement The Board of Directors of Leg Up Therapeutic Riding Center are meeting the continuing challenges of the organization. To date we have been able to incrementally increase participation growth as well as community support through sponsorships of businesses and other organizations such as Martin Serves, The Impact Center, and 4-H groups. The volunteer base has risen to a total of 61 volunteers. On-going fund-raising through grant request success and special events is needed to accomplish the facility's growth and development. Creating a stable core group of people to fill actual staff positions is being addressed through the potential development of some part-time paid positions. Founder, Rebecca McManus, has had over twenty years plus experience teaching special education, and has been involved in equestrian activities for over thirty years.it has been my dream to combine these two passions, teaching and riding, in a manner that allows me to express my passion for people and horses. Being involved in LegUp has certainly been a dream come true. CEO Statement Leg Up Therapeutic Riding Center (TRC) is giving people with disabilities a chance to experience something unique. Interacting with gentle giants like these equine partners through safe, energetic exercise in a rural environment filled with sunshine and fresh air is a miracle for people who have so many limits put on their lives. Leg Up TRC is an organization for health (mental and physical), hope and most importantly, joy. We service an area that has no comparable enterprise. We aid these people in an effort to expand their dreams and horizons by allowing them to succeed and have fun doing it. And, it creates a place of wonder for our instructors and volunteers as well as our clients. 3
4 Programs Programs Recreational Riding Program Description Equine-assisted activities like those offered by Leg Up TRC benefit those with a variety of disabilities who are referred from the lower Middle Tennessee counties of Lawrence, Lincoln, Giles and Marshall. Statistics for our four sessions in 2015 show a participant level of 25 riders, a total 253 hours of certified instruction and a cumulative total of 5,000+ volunteer hours. In 2015 the center had 7 horses. Facility improvements include an 80 by 200 foot outdoor arena, pasture, paddocks, and a fourstall horse barn with an office and handicapped-accessible restroom. Additionally, a mounting block and ramp system has been installed, upgraded parking area w/landscaping constructed, and a canvas shade area for observers erected. Riders ranging in age from 4 to adult must have an initial rider assessment to establish a baseline for measuring outcomes. Outcomes fall into four categories;i.e. physical, cognitive, social and emotional benefits. For example, a successful outcome for the physical benefits of equine assisted activity would be a measure of improved muscle tone, increased strength and endurance as well as improved balance and posture. Cognitive (educational) goals would include learning numbers and sequencing. In 2015, we began developing a Sensory Trail for our riders. This allows riders to work outside an arena where the footing is varied. Riders learn to maintain their balance by adjusting their position on the horses. Budget Population Served People/Families with of People with Disabilities,, Short Term Success Long term Success Program Success Monitored By In 2012, Leg Up provided 230 instructional hours for 20 riders ages range from 4 to adult. A total of 3,942 volunteers hours werelogged in during the past year. Pasture management maintained was greatly improved by the purchase of the new mower and harrow. Leg Up is developing a community of people that come together and work for a common goal to improve the lives of individuals with live challenges. We are creating a safe environment that is acceptance ofindividual differences by developing a better understanding of how communication occurs. Our commitment to improving a level of trust frosts an emotional bond between people and the horses in our program Instructors provide end of the session evaluations of all participants in the program. Riders and their families are asked to provide feedback about their experience in the program. Volunteers and staff are encouraged to give suggestions and feedback about the program. 4
5 Examples of Program Success Alaina is nonverbal autistic child with cerebral palsy. Since she started her lessons at Leg Up, her balance has improved, and she is havingfewer falls and accidents. Since she is nonverbal, we had no idea how she would be able to communicate with her horse, Mr. Dee. But, we learned, horses respond to your body position as much as your voice, so Alaina has learned to use her body, more specifically her arms and head, to tell Mr. Dee when to stop, go and turn. This has given her so muchhappiness and independence. Lessons at leg Up are far more than getting on a horse and riding around. Alaina must also help with grooming Mr.Dee. We have watched her go from not being able to hold a brush, to independently picking it up and brushing the horse. Instead of her always being the one cared for, she is able to care for someone else. There are not a lot of things that Alaina can do, but she can ride a horse and feel the freedom and pride of doing so. CEO Comments The 2015 program served 25 riders during Spring, Summer, Fall sessions. Seven horses are now available at the center. The center holds a spring, summer and fall session each year. A winter session is not available because the arena is uncovered and without overhead lighting. 5

Being an all volunteer organization is both a challenge and an opportunity. Our volunteer staff has allowed us to be solvent; however, staffing with all volunteers is sometimes a source of inconsistency due to turnover. The Board feels that when we are able to have enough funding, we would hire for some part time positions: PATH instructors, an office manager, and a volunteer coordinator. This funding would create greater continuity within the organization and its operations.the Board, up to now, has been focused on funding to pay for the Program and for maintenance and improvements. As additional funding becomes available, the Board would also like to fund part time employees and make capital improvements to the arena. 7

We have maintained our focus on developing our volunteers who support our day-by-day mission to enrich lives through the equine activities here at Leg Up.
