SLC 40 th Annual SWRDM in Utah We host SWRDM in The purpose of SWRDM is to bring together the Delegates of the southwest region prior to the World Service Conference to (1) warmly welcome and support the new delegates, (2) provide current delegates the opportunity to share conference practices and procedures and (3) help keep past delegates connected, involved and informed. All discussions are designed to bring closer communication and understanding to our Southwest Region Al-Anon Delegates. We have opened attendance at SWRDM 2015 to all in- Delegates Report Fall 2014 terested Al-Anons (anyone who is interested can come and observe at no cost.). Opportunities for Utah Area Al-Anon members to serve in several different categories: Please contact Mary Y. if you are interested in serving (801) or mary.e.yearout@gmai l.com Well, it's been just a year since the election of our new panel, (Panel 54.) First of all let me say that I continue to feel humbled and grateful to have the trust of the Utah area GRs. I'm so grateful to be able to provide this service to the members of Utah area. Thank you for your love and support. Some wonderful things that happened in this last year: 1. Along with Kathryn, our Alternate Delegate, and two past delegates, I attended the Southwest Regional Delegates Meeting in Tucson. This was a wonderful opportunity to meet Al-Anon members from other states in our Southwest region and to prepare for the 54th annual World Service Conference. At the conference our Utah delegation submitted a bid to host the Southwest Regional Delegates Meeting in Salt Lake City in Since it was our turn anyway, our bid was excepted, and in late March Delegates, Past Delegates and other interested Al-Anon members will come to Salt Lake City for the SWRDM conference. All Al-Anon members from Utah will be invited to attend on March th 2015, many thanks to Glenna and Mary Y for your work on this conference. 2. 2 Delegates Report Fall 2014 (Continuted from pg 1) flourish in our Utah area. 3. I attended the 54th annual World Service Conference in Virginia Beach, Virginia. This incredible experience demonstrated to me the phenomenal worldwide fellowship to which we belong. The conference theme, Our spiritual principles in action reflects the commitment of Al-Anon's Board of Directors and World Service Office staff to making all of our efforts, even the business decisions in Al-Anon, a spiritual process. 4. I had a wonderful time at our Delegates Day and learned several valuable lessons about how to become a better Trusted Servant. Many thanks to all who attended. I appreciate your enthusiasm, your interest, and support as I work to fulfill my responsibility as the liaison between the World Service Conference and the Al-Anon groups in Utah. Excerpts from Delegates Day: The theme of the 2014 World Service Conference was Our Spiritual Principles in Action. This theme is such a potent reminder of the direction our lives take as we work our way through recovery with the 12 Steps. Step Twelve says: Having had a spiritual awakening as a result of these Steps, we tried to carry this message to others, and to practice these principles in all our affairs. Many of us came to Al- Anon seeking nothing more than relief from the pain another s drinking has brought into our lives. We soon learned to focus on ourselves and not the alcoholic, and to make the program our own. We learned that recovery happens one day at a time as we do the footwork and turn outcomes over to a Power Greater Than Ourselves. As we continued to work at recovery, we became aware that our association with Al-Anon was changing our lives. We found some measure of serenity, but we also learned that the principles of the program provide a darn good way to live a full, stable, exciting life. This is what has happened to me. I m so very grateful that Al-Anon has taught me how to put spiritual principles into every day action. I m so grateful that I get to do this together with so many wonderful, recovering people. 5. The theme of the 2015 world service conference SWRDM, has been announced. It is, Living Our Spiritual Principles: Expanding Our Vision. Which is being held here in S.L.C. 6. We look forward to participation in the spring PRAASA event, hosted here in Layton UT, on March 6 th -8 th, 2015 and appreciate the hard work of the Al-Anon committee. Registration is $25 and you can pre-register online at 7. So much more has occurred at world, area, district, and group level. We could spend all day just talking about all that we have accomplished. Thanks to all of you who serve in so many different capacities. My world, and the world of Al-Anon, is so much better because of your effort. 3 Why I am Excited about PRAASA PRAASA is Pacific Region Alcoholics Anonymous Service Assembly. The purpose pf PRAASA is to develop greater unity among members, groups and the area; to encourage the exchange of ideas and experiences; and to provide an opportunity for members to discuss aspects of AA. Al-Anon participation includes our own schedule & a speaker on Saturday, I thought it a wonderful idea to be a part of sharing this time, experience and service with other Al-Anon members from the Pacific Region. I am a huge fan of family recovery so anytime I can promote events where all programs are included I am there. Having grown up in an alcoholic home I understand the dynamics both the disease and the recovery process have on a family. When my dad finally got into AA and started working a program, everyone noticed a difference right away. I am not saying everything was wonderful, but it was a starting point. I did not understand my dad s disease and in the beginning I did not understand this AA recovery process either. Once in Al-Anon the understanding and knowledge started making sense. Although my dad had passed away long before I came to Al-Anon, I was able to heal and forgive my dad. Those men and women from Alcoholics Anonymous helped my dad and once I realized that, I felt the need to express my gratitude. By being of service in the Al-Anon and Alateen programs I am giving back to AA where I can in my own program! Our closing says let the understanding, love and peace of the program grow in you one day at a time, that is how I handle most days. Understanding the disease of Alcoholism has helped me to forgive and try not to have false expectation of people. Loving everyone for what they have to offer and for who they are and nothing more has helped me with acceptance. Seeking to have peace in my life has given me the courage to make hard decisions, not accept unacceptable behavior and has given me the ability to have serenity in my life. Service has been a super charge in my recovery. There are many opportunities to serve at PRAASA. If you would like to participate come and join us on Monday January 5th at 6 pm. At the Clearfield Community Church. Volunteers and Skit actors are needed for PRAASA. The Committee Inside My Head is a skit about a girl coming to understand and accept her Character defects. She uses the slogans to calm and collect each of her over zealous instincts. Cast of Characters include: Control Freak, Anger, Over- Thinker, Depression, Fear, Insecurity, Denial, Guilt, the Girl, Stage Hand (her sponsor), and Serenity. Here is an except from the skit: (The stage hands takes a sign from the toolbox and walks across the stage with LET IT BEGIN WITH ME sign. Everyone quietly watches it go by). Girl: Let it begin with me? Control Freak: How is she thinking for herself? Don t you mean Let it begin with US! Anger: Who is letting her have her own thoughts? Continued on Pg 4 U T A H ARE A W WW. 4 The Committee Inside My Head (Recovery Skit for PRAASA ) Fear: This will never do, she will get us into trouble, getting out there beginning things. It is coming from those Alanon meetings she has been attending! We have to stop her, but how? Over Thinker: I have a contingency for that, I will have it all figured out in a moment. (writing furiously, pointing to one side of the board, then the other) We could try this, (points to shame) I don t know, that might not work. No maybe this over here, here s the plan, we could all just.. (Mumbles on). (Serenity looks calm, Stage hand enters with KEEP IT SIMPLE Sign, walks across the stage. Then walks back and takes THINK sign out of toolbox and walks over and sticks it on the board, on top of all of Over Thinkers Scribbles. Over Thinker just stops puts down the marker and takes the pose of the thinker putting one hand to bent More Events head, face becomes composed). Girl: Oh Keep it Simple, THINK Wait a minute figure it out is not a slogan. When I feel my life falling apart, I know one place I d rather be. When my heart feels sad and in despair. I read my encouraging, daily readers for comfort, And open my eyes and ears for those who share. When I feel I am going a bit astray. I redirect my path and seek my higher power, And practice meditation, patience, and pray. With my new found friends, and amazing sponsor. With them in my life I find new meaning to acceptance, Which is unconditional and filled with laughter. As I continue to share hope with my fellow friends, I know what is expressed here will remain in confidence, And I find solace we are in a journey till the end. Yolanda C.
