Mental Health and Wellbeing News for Great Yarmouth & Waveney Mind. Issue 4, October We are proud to present the fourth edition of Great Yarmouth & Waveney Mind's bi-monthly newsletter, bringing you Mental Health and Wellbeing news. Welcome to our October newsletter! Included below, you will find a range of information and news relating to mental health and wellbeing in the Great Yarmouth and Waveney area. We aim to keep you updated with the latest information relating to mental health, changes to services, and upcoming events. This edition includes: NCS comes to Great Yarmouth & Waveney MIND Mental Health First Aid Training For Adults (MHFA) Upcoming Wellbeing Activities/Courses Donators A message from one of our trustees NCS comes to Great Yarmouth & Waveney MIND Recently, a group of young people from the National Citizen Service visited the Great Yarmouth & Waveney Mind offices to ask what they could do to help out the charity as part of their Social Action Plan. Great Yarmouth & Waveney Mind was chosen as their charity of choice because a member of the group had experience of their service prior to doing this project. After speaking to Stuart Bennett, the Charity s Business Development Manager, it was decided that they would assist with decoration and renovation of the Charity s residential unit based in Caister- On-Sea, Great Yarmouth. The Social Action Plan was put in place and work began on Monday 7th August 2017.

The NCS group with their Team Leaders At the residential unit, the group were tasked with various indoor decoration jobs, such as painting the hallways, bathrooms and some of the bedrooms. Along with this, towards the end of the project, the young people also helped to renovate the garden areas at both the back and front of the properties. During their time there, the young people had the opportunity to speak to some of the staff and residents of the unit about the services provided by Great Yarmouth & Waveney Mind and some of the residents experiences. Maddie said of Lawrence. His artwork was incredible and the advice he gave us about how to get on in life was brilliant After speaking to another one of the residents, Molly said It was great how Kevin had managed to turn his experience into a positive one by using a ton of humour. His poems are awesome! Denise Brown, Residential Coordinator for the unit, was full of praise for the young people involved. We are truly grateful for their help, what they have managed to achieve in such a short period of time has been fantastic. They have really worked hard and are a real credit to themselves and the NCS project

National Citizen Service The National Citizen Service runs in Norfolk for Year 11s/12s, providing young people with the opportunity to take part in residential camps and volunteering projects in their local communities. Norwich City Community Sports Foundation continue to deliver the National Citizen Service in the summer and autumn as part of the NCS East group run by Reed in Partnership. For more information about the National Citizen Service in Norfolk, please visit: Great Yarmouth & Waveney Mind Great Yarmouth and Waveney Mind is a forward thinking community based organisation which encourages and supports mental well-being. Through education they will challenge stigma and discrimination in everything we do, encouraging equal opportunities, positive thinking and embracing cultural diversity. For more information about the work that is done, please visit: Mental Health First Aid Training For Adults (MHFA) Two courses have been announced: 20th and 27th October :30 to 16:30* 17th and 24th November :30 to 16:30* *Course times and dates are subject to change Cost 160 (concessions available) To book a place or for further information contact us on: training@gywmind.org.uk phone: Mental Health First Aid Training for Adults can be provided by Great Yarmouth & Waveney Mind. Our quality assured MHFA instructors deliver training that has been designed to fit into four manageable chunks. These are: Mental Health First Aid, mental health, and depression Depression (cont.) and suicidal crisis Anxiety, personality disorders, eating disorders and self-harm Psychosis, schizophrenia and bipolar disorder In each section you ll learn how to: Spot the early signs of a mental health issue Feel confident helping someone experiencing a mental health issue Provide help on a first aid basis Help prevent someone from hurting themselves or others Help stop a mental health issue from getting worse Help someone recover faster Guide someone towards the right support Reduce the stigma of mental health issues. We accommodate a minimum of 12 people, up to a maximum class size of 16 people.

The course is an internationally recognised course. Everyone who attends the course will receive a copy of the MHFA manual and workbook, which are both excellent support resources. When you have completed the course you will receive a certificate to confirm that you are a trained Mental Health First Aider. The course is for everyone aged 16 and upwards and you don t need any qualifications or experience in mental health to take part. The course is normally 2 days, but can be spilt into 1 day 1 week then the 2nd day 2nd week. Or over 3 days in one week. Independent evaluations prove that MHFA works. It provides the skills, knowledge and understanding of first aid for mental health and how to effectively support those experiencing mental distress. This empowers both individuals and communities to understand the signs and symptoms of mental health issues and how best to support themselves and those around them in recovery to ensure well-being. After completing the MHFA course, 68% of Mental Health First Aiders report using their new MHFA skills with at least one person. They also report a statistically significant increase in knowledge, confidence and perception of mental health issues as well as evidence of a positive impact on their own mental health. Please contact us at training@gywmind.org.uk for more information. Upcoming Wellbeing Activities/Courses

Donators A very big thank you to all of our very generous donators including Allens Music in Great Yarmouth, who very kindly donated 80, NCS who raised 86.71, and Caister Golf Club which donated 180. We have also received 380 in anonymous donations! It is with regret that Michelle Barnes has resigned as a GYW Mind Trustee due to personal reasons. Whilst Michelle was only appointed recently she had made a positive contribution to our organisation and she will be missed. Here is a piece submitted by one of our trustee s Pete Boczko, about becoming a trustee: We d like to offer you the position of Trustee within the Great Yarmouth and Waveney Mind charity,.

That was the sentence (from the Chair of the Board as I was driving to John Lewis in Norwich) that began my time (or tenure if your posh!), as a member of an experienced board, guiding a charity that since its inception in 1978 had gone from strength to strength. My own journey to this point had been what you might call a bit of a ride! Leaving home at 15 to join the Army, then serving worldwide in some nice and not to nice places, finally leaving after 23years service with great memories but a pair of dodgy knees and a knackered back! Joined Caterpillar (Manufacturing Giant), as an Operations Manager and then began a second career, holding various positions in: - Peterborough (UK), Larne (NI), Atlanta and Chicago (USA) Bangalore (India) and finally back to the UK. Phew!! Still having a bad Back and Knees, but now truly Jet Lagged. Finally arrived in Hembsy, Norfolk trying to slow down, but also looking for something to keep me semi active plus maybe add a little value from some of the experienced gained in the Business environment but also, I think at last count, having moved in to house number 23, tips on packing can be supplied free of charge. It s quite exciting joining the Charity at this moment as Mental Health and Wellbeing have become a National talking point and we are well placed to continue with the excellent service we provide to date and maybe. just maybe. we might even look to provide more! Being part of that will be a pleasure. If you have any content which you would like to submit for the next newsletter, which will be in December 2017, then please contact Great Yarmouth & Waveney Mind on or reception@gywmind.org.uk If you know of anybody who would be interested in receiving this newsletter, please direct them to where they can fill out a simple form to sign up for the subsequent newsletters.
