1 the Stethoscope A Monthly Newsletter of the FMH Auxiliary and Volunteer Program 400 West 7th Street Frederick, MD Website: President s Message F. Ellen Noland Season s Greetings, 7 New Members Judith Buchanan Samudra Ekanayake Judith Engel Sandra Liscinsky Rodney Morton Marelvy Parada Leslie Sepulvado Wishing All our readers a Very Happy Holiday Season You may not hear it, but I am often told how important you are to the efficiency of the hospital and you truly are appreciated by the hospital staff. Hopefully, construction will be winding down and it will be easier to navigate through the hospital next month. Thanks for hanging in there! Thanks to the volunteers at Select Seconds for their patience as the new back porch was built and the internal problems are getting fixed. It seems 2015 was a challenging year for volunteers. We cannot forget our gift shop...they have been hurt by the construction...please remind people to visit the gift shop. Wendy has stocked the gift shop with some wonderful holiday items...come in and shop. I wish each of you a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year...Happy Holidays to all. Enjoy good food...calories don't count during the holidays. Enjoy your family...warm hugs. I look forward to working with you, my last six months of the presidency; in you are such a delightful group. Thank you for giving your time to volunteer and help others. It's what we do! Newsletter Committee 2015 Issue 10 Editor & Co-Chairs: Jan McLoon/Joann Ramsburg Circulation Committee: Joann & John Ramsburg, Mary Frances Trout, Audrey Hiltbrand, Dorothy Kovatch, Gerry Souders, Jean Kessinger, Beth Callahan. 2 President s Letter Thomas A. Kleinhanzl Dear Friends, The holiday season is here already. I hope you have many opportunities to enjoy the festivities with your family and friends. Once again your fund-raising activities are bringing holiday cheer to our visitors and employees. The holiday bazaar was a wonderful kick-off for the season. We re all looking forward to the upcoming sales and tree lighting ceremony this month. Our annual holiday party will be held on Thursday, December 17 from 11 a.m. 2 p.m. and 4-7 p.m. Please stop by and enjoy great food and a chance to catch up with your friends at FMH. You have all been so involved in our construction work that you might not need an update from me at this point. I will keep it short. We re continuing our work on the first floor access corridor and we look forward to having it open in January. The new Red Zone in the Emergency Department is open and the first phase of renovation to the Imaging Department is complete. Construction continues on the Emergency Department bump out near the Blue entrance, but most of the steel work is done so it should be quieter on that side of the building. We appreciate your ongoing efforts to assist our patients and visitors. Our Wayfinding Ambassadors are crucial to our success during these next few months. We look forward to breaking ground at Rose Hill for the new Cancer Institute this spring. Thank you for your generous support of this important project. You are helping us to bring world class cancer care to our community. On behalf of the senior leadership team, I wish you and your loved ones a happy and relaxing holiday and a healthy new year. Best regards, Tom Kleinhanzl President & CEO Frederick Regional Health System 2
3 Director s Letter Sharon Hannaby Happy Holidays to all of you! It has been an extremely busy year at FMH. Construction has been underway for most of the year and we still have until October of 2016 until the completion of this project. We never could have done any of this without your help. As confusing as it can be for us (the insiders) it is even more difficult for our patients and visitors who are already under stress. I cannot thank you all enough for the many hours you have put in to help our patients and visitors arrive at their destination. YOU have truly made a difference. I hope you leave each shift with a sense of accomplishment. Do you have friends who make New Year s resolutions? Why not suggest volunteering it can be just what they need to make their resolution come to fruition. Whether their goal is to help others, meet new people, learn a new skill, or even to lose weight (we do a lot of walking here), volunteering could just be the perfect thing for them. Volunteering is perfect for those who live alone, are empty nesters, or for couples who want something they can do together. We are in need of adult volunteers in a variety of areas. Prospective volunteers can call the volunteer office ( ) for more information and an application. Remember, the #1 reason people volunteer is because someone asked them to help. My wish for all of you is that you will take some time during this busy season to find the time to relax and take care of yourself. You are important to us! Thanks for all you do - Always!! Fundraising Update Joann Ramsburg A sincere Thank you to the volunteer members who donated craft and food items, and to the volunteers who donated their time working the Holiday Bazaar. It was a successful event although we do not have the actual profit figures yet. COOKIES, COOKIES - Please do not let us down on the Cookie Sale. We will need cookies delivered by the morning of Thursday, December 10 th for set up and making the cookie trays. If you plan to get a cookie tray, please order trays ahead of time by contacting Joann, either by fjrams331@aol.com or phone: Final Partings Patricia Reifsnider 3

The Gift Shop has had wonderful support from Auxiliary Members and for this, we are very grateful. It is nice to belong to an organization where everyone works together to achieve a goal. As most of you know the wall has gone up which puts the shop out of any traffic flow. If it wasn't for you showing and reminding people to purchase at the store, our holiday season would be very grim. I have never been in the store during operating hours where an auxiliary member has not purchased something. You are our best customers. The store is slated to be renovated in the beginning of January. It will be closed for a week to 10 days. This again will provide a challenge to our profits but how exciting to have a beautiful new floor and paint job. We also will have new security cameras in place to help with safety of the staff and decrease the amount of theft. So the New Year should be exciting! The staff of the gift shop wishes you and yours a very happy Holiday season and may the New Year bring health and happiness. 4
5 Select Second Notes Betty Klug In this holiday season, we would like to give thanks for everyone who supports our shop. Thank you for your donations, they keep all the volunteers busy and we are amazed at the volume and variety of donations. Thanks also to all of you who support us by shopping at Select Seconds, some we see on a regular basis. We would also like to thank some of our downtown merchants. With all the donations we receive, we don't always know the value of some of the items. McGuire Fine Arts is always happy to give advice on artwork. The Brass and Copper shop is also a great help. Wholesale and Diamond Consultants and the Frederick Coin Exchange help us with pricing jewelry and coins. We also receive help from Cole's Pawn Shop and Fabulous Finds. Have a wonderful holiday and we hope to see you again in January when we will have lots of new merchandise. Hour-by-Hour Hours Committee Volunteer hours worked for the month of October were: 63 Juniors worked hours 35 College students worked hours 325 Seniors worked 5, hours Total hours worked in October were 6, Select Seconds - Betty Kreh The profit from for the month of October was $12, Gift Shop - Nancy Speck Gift shop profit for October was $2,515.32, rather low as a result of the construction activities around the Shop. 5
