1 FEBRUARY 2015 the Stethoscope A Monthly Newsletter of the FMH Auxiliary and Volunteer Program 400 West 7th Street Frederick, MD Website: 6 New Members Stacie Burdge Barbara Collins James Hocker Kathleen Milne Brenda Myers Astrid Nader President s Message F. Ellen Noland Here we are in a new year and we have lots going on in To stay informed P L E A S E read your newsletter each month. The newsletter informs you of upcoming events, happenings within the hospital, when dues are to be paid, if there is a date change on an event and other interesting volunteer information. Enclosed and online, you will find a colored sheet (thank you Jan) showing the sales/fund raisers scheduled for Hopefully, this will help you to plan for the sales, give you time to make crafts and bake the goodies for the events. It would be great if you can come out and volunteer at one of the events. We had a very successful past six months with our vendor sales and auxiliary events...this would not be possible without your help. Thank you to all the volunteers who came out to work the events, those that made crafts and candy for the bazaar and those that baked the wonderful assortment of cookies. We look forward to what you come up with this year. The bazaar raised $ 2, and the cookie sale raised $ 1, These funds go toward the auxiliary pledge to the FMH new Cancer Institute. I want to thank all the volunteers that worked on the day of the holiday. We truly appreciate you giving your time and your dedication to the auxiliary. Continued on page 3 Newsletter Committee 2015 Issue 01 Editor & Co-Chairs: Jan McLoon/Joann Ramsburg Circulation Committee: Joann & John Ramsburg, Mary Frances Trout, Audrey Hiltbrand, Dorothy Kovatch, Gerry Souders, Jean Kessinger, Beth Callahan. 2 FMH President s Letter Thomas A. Kleinhanzl Dear Friends, Hello and Happy New Year! I hope you were able to enjoy your holidays in the midst of the Cookie Sale and the Book Sale and all of your other volunteer activities. Your enthusiastic support of our hospital and your fundraising for the new Cancer Institute are greatly appreciated. You have probably noticed that we ve had a full house lately with many patients suffering from the flu and other respiratory ailments. We are working hard to help these patients get healthy and go home. Those of you who greet our visitors already know that we are taking steps to keep our patients, visitors, volunteers and staff safe during this time of increased flu activity by recommending that patients be limited to one or two visitors at a time and we are asking those under the age of 16 not to visit the hospital unless they are seeking medical care. Thank you for your help in greeting so many visitors and facilitating access to our patients. Our Environment of Care committee has been evaluating the hospital for safety and fall prevention and we ve instituted some changes based on their initial findings. The mats are being replaced at each entryway to prevent tripping and leaks in the parking deck are being assessed for repair. Additional work is going into Call, Don t Fall messaging in the patient rooms and a Risk to Fall medication list being created by our pharmacy department. Our construction work is progressing. The steel beams we re putting up now will be part of the new entrance here on campus. I ll have more information to share on the next phase of our lobby and emergency department expansion next month, so please stay tuned. We are in the process of demolishing the vacant buildings at our Rosehill location. Please note we remain open for business at this location throughout the demolition. We have recently installed new and larger signage at Rosehill to help our patients find us there. Thank you for all you do for FMH. Wishing you and your loved ones good health and happiness in Best regards, Tom Kleinhanzl President & CEO Frederick Regional Health System 2
3 Director s Letter A few odds and ends. Sharon M. Hannaby Did you know the #1 reason people give for why they volunteer? It is as simple as this someone asked me. This means that you are the best means of recruiting new volunteers. Please think about asking your friends, neighbors, relatives especially those who are retired or empty nesters to Join Us. Are you getting the credit you deserve? Please be sure to record all of your hours spent volunteering. If you are on committees/services where you make calls from home, work on projects at home, etc. be sure you put these extra hours in the sign-in book with an explanation of work at home. In recent years, our hours have dropped and we are sure it is due to hours not being reported, not that fewer hours are being spent working by our volunteers. We have a number of departments looking for help with clerical tasks. If you, or someone you know, are interested, please contact me at the volunteer office ( or shannaby@fmh.org). Are you an early bird? The information desk is in need of volunteers for the early morning hours of 6:30 or 7am until 9:00am. Volunteers will greet patients and visitors and escort them to the appropriate locations. Patient Registration would also like volunteers to help escort/transport patients throughout the day. Happy 2015!! Spring is coming a robin was spotted this weekend. Always!! President s Message continued from page 1 A big thank you goes to Carol Powell and Celebrate Frederick, Inc. Carol chaired the annual holiday house tours and chooses FMH Auxiliary, as the organization, to receive a donation from Celebrate Frederick, Inc. The auxiliary received a check, in the amount of $ 5,414.25, to go towards the auxiliary pledge to the FMH new cancer institute. Reminder: Snow Closings 2 HOURS LATE OR NO SCHOOL NO MEETING. 1 hour late meeting will be held. Thank you for giving your time to volunteer and help others. It s what we do. Hour-by-Hour Hours Committee Volunteer hours worked for the month of October was: 61 Juniors worked hours 28 College students worked hours 327 Seniors worked 6, hours Total hours worked in October was 7,

5 Gift Shop Wendy Brundage Thank you for your support during the Holidays. January brings the new gift shows all over the country. I went back to Atlanta. This time I stayed a day longer. The main emphasis was Christmas and Fall, which I honestly didn't want to see. But I did look and place an order for next year. I did walk and walk to find new items for the store. The gift market had a special area of made in America by small companies. I enjoyed seeing people's hopes and dreams realized. I purchased wine inspired soy candles. The neat things about the candles are not only the amazing scent they had - but a portion of their profits go to animal rescue. The next item purchased was sterling silver necklaces. We have inspirational ones along with pearls in a pea-pod; the pearls correspond with the amount of children. The next company was a t-shirt manufacturer from Baltimore. They had great shirts with the Maryland Flag. One even had crabs with horse racing silks in the crab and a black eyed Susan in honor of the Preakness. Atlanta was as amazing as July but many more people attended this show. The extra day allowed me just to wander. I love to see the creativity of the displays. I got quite a few ideas on how to put our items out. It is a very tiring event but well worth it. I hope you come into the store to see what we have. A lot of the new items have already started coming in to the shop. As always, thank you, we would not be the shop we are without your support. Recruitment and Appreciation Jo Ann Bradshaw At the recent R & A meeting, we discussed the upcoming fundraiser sales and requested volunteers sign up to work these occasions. We are planning a bus day trip to Rocky Gap on Wednesday, April 22, Reserve the date details to follow. Bring a friend (maybe someone interested in becoming a volunteer), a spouse, etc. Cost around $40.00 but you will receive a $20.00 card to be used on the slots. Should be a fun day and who knows, someone may hit the jackpot! Upcoming Events: Annual picnic in May. The Annual Luncheon will be held on Thursday, June 4, 2015 at 11:30 AM at Holly Hills Country Club. More information will follow as we get closer to these dates. Spring Bake and Plant Sale Joann Ramsburg We are bringing back our Spring Bake and Plant Sale. We are holding it on Friday, April 3 rd. We will be accepting all baked items, especially Spring cakes. Reminder, we cannot accept 5
6 custard or cream type pies or desserts. Easter candy will also be accepted. Please help our Auxiliary with your special homemade items we can sell. Need.. If you have any baskets that you would like to donate, we are placing the plants in baskets as Easter gifts for purchase.
