Newsletter Editors Erle Wheatley & Brian Phillips The Passing of PDG Hanspeter Borgwarth Editor s Note. In the seven years Jenny and I were co-chairs of District 5580 Youth Exchange, we visited Hanspeter and Gisela at their lakeside home in Minnesota a number of times. He was particularly supportive of Youth Exchange and did much to encourage us in what was a very onerous but rewarding task. He was very serious about Rotary and we recall him telling the story of his visit to Hamburg, Germany, his home city, in which there was still only one elitist Rotary Club. Visiting the club he had 1 Page

2 no fear in politely but firmly telling them how inappropriate their attitude was to the cause of Rotary. His wise counsel in the running of RD 5580 will be missed. Interested in the adventure of a lifetime? Join one of two 5580 international service trips to Bolivia in 2017! Come and experience the colorful and vibrant culture of Bolivia and the beauty of the Andes Mountains. March 25th April 8 th The first team will travel to Bolivia to participate in the building of an elementary school in the Andes mountain village of Guitarrani. June 11 th June17th The second team will travel to Bolivia for the grand opening and community celebration of the Guitarrani School. Both teams will also visit water reservoirs, and medical clinics sponsored by our district in collaboration with Mano A Mano International as well as potential project sites. Possible side trips include the UNESCO World Heritage sites of Machu Picchu in Peru and the incredible Salt Flats of Uyuni, Bolivia. Visit the world s largest statue of Christ, Cristo de la Concordia, in Cochabamba, and the Cretaceous Dinosaur Park in Sucre. 3 The Meeting of January 18th The smiling face of Erle Wheatley greeted everyone at the door this evening. Honorary Rotarian, Erin Osesky, daughter of Ted, and Claudio Monteleone from the Lakehead Club were the guests for the evening. Claudio attended the meeting in order to distribute the Centennial clothing that had been ordered by club members. Karl Wahl worked the catwalk by modeling the hooded sweatshirt. Craig Sandberg proposed the toast to the Queen and Canada. Solade Nicole introduced the guest speaker, Sharla Brown, founder of Keynote Events, which is an event-planning company. Sharla also hosts a weekly show on Shaw Cable called In Your Neighbourhood. Sharla started her company four and half years ago. She wanted to start a business that made a difference in the world. She does big events that have 300-3,000 people in attendance. Hers is a one-woman business but she does believe in partnerships. Sharla showed a video of some of the local events that she has organized such as the Mud Run and the Savor Superior Food Festival. She enjoys creating events that are different and tries to use local businesses and people to make events happen. Her next event celebrates Valentine s Day and takes place on February 10. It is titled Dueling Pianos. Sharla then presented her recipe for a great event. The first ingredient is to have an awesome idea. Throw in some creative marketing, making sure to keep things fresh. Follow this with a marketing plan and an event plan, making sure to look at demographics and trying to find free resources. Try to find sponsors and partners that make sense for the event that is planned. Try to make a difference. Create WIN/WIN/ WIN events making sure that the sponsor gets something of value. Another ingredient is to take a risk. This may be a tough thing to do for charities but Sharla s view is that 3 Page

4 if there is no risk, there is no reward. Learn from your mistakes. Look at what worked and what did not work; and finally have fun. Sharla then, very generously, gave everyone in attendance a copy of the book, The Wealthy Barber Returns. Thank you very much, Sharla. President Bob made two Paul Harris Fellow presentations. Dave Knutson received his PHF+1 while Bev Knutson received her PHF+2. Finemaster for the meeting was David Knutson. New member, Terri Hrkac, quickly learned the consequences of having one s cell phone ring during the meeting when Dave fined her two dollars. Erle Wheatley, Sharon Badanai, Joan Krisko, and President Bob all had Happy Dollars to contribute. Dave then fined anyone who had not seen a light pillar. President Bob discussed the topic of updating the club s bylaws. This issue had been raised at the previous evening s Board meeting. Dave Knutson, Chair of the Bylaw Committee, discussed the topic noting that the club is a corporation. The annual Valentine s Day Dinner will take place on Wednesday, February 8 at the Fort William Country Club. Please let Joan know if you are interested in attending. The 100 th Anniversary Dinner will be taking place on Friday, February 17 at the Valhalla. There will be a champagne reception. Each person in attendance will receive an engraved champagne flute. Tickets are $60. Please talk to Joan if you are interested in attending. Please note that the regular February 15 meeting will be canceled because of the dinner. President Bob gave a House Lottery report. He then discussed Country Fest It will take place on August 11 and 12 at the Murillo Fall Fair grounds. There will be 12 bands. The club will require 60 volunteers to run the bar for the two days. 4 Page

5 Solade Nicol did the Lighter Side. He has also been busy working hard to get donations for the Anniversary Dinner. Thank you, Solade. AG Irene Sottile reminded club members that we will be responsible for providing five baskets for the Silent Auction. Gordie Garriock will be sponsoring one basket. Irene asked that the men sponsor one basket and the women sponsor. She asked that each person contribute $10 to pay for the baskets. The Satellite Club will be sponsoring another basket. SAA Erle asked Arun Dighe to pick a ticket for the 50/50 draw. Claudio Monteleione held the winning number but the lucky Queen of Hearts proved to be a fickle lady and Claudio did not win the money!
