The Fortarian Rotary Club of Thunder Bay, October 1, 2014 (Fort William) 2013/2014 Board of Directors Website President: Jodi Phillips Directors: Bruce Nugent Treasurer: Boris Cham Sharon Badanai Secretary: Joan Krisko Sante Sottile President Elect: Bev Knutson Cynthia Judge Past President: Richard Khoury Therese Lim Meets: 3rd Monday of each month Fhara Pottinger Lakehead Board of Education, 6:45 pm 2135 Sills Street Allocations Committee Committee Chair: Peter Stetsko Meets: 2nd Tuesday of each month Weiler Maloney Nelson Board Room 12 noon Weekly Dinner Meetings Rotary House Lottery Chair: Bob Hookham Meets: 1st Tuesday of each month Weiler Maloney Nelson 12 noon Mailing Address Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. Thunder Bay, ON Airlane Hotel & Conference Centre P.O. Box W. Arthur St. Thunder Bay, ON Canada P7B 6T6 Newsletter Editors Erle Wheatley & Brian Phillips OUR FOUNDATION Karl Wahl fulfilled the duties of Sergeant at Arms most effectively. We tucked into a delicious meal with an Italian theme, insalata, fettucine Alfredo and, in honour of the hunting season, chicken cacciatore, with breaded sole as the pesce alternative. Your scribe has wondered about chicken in Hunter style, thinking that perhaps venison or coniglio alla cacciatore might be a more obvious choice. Perhaps this is what happens when the number of moose tags diminishes.. Putting rumination aside and getting down to business 1 P a g e

Our guests for the evening included a fellow Rotarian and speaker for the evening, Bill Gray from the Cataraqui-Kingston club, and Erin Osesky. Sharon Badanai led the Club in a toast to the Queen. Irene Sottile introduced Bill Gray formally, presenting his biographic information with a specific emphasis on his extensive engagement in Rotary and, more specifically the work of the Foundation. Bill made an excellent presentation around a number of key questions: Why support the Rotary Foundation? A: it belongs to us, is credible, responsible and operates with transparency. What does the Foundation do? A: Links Rotarians worldwide, creates a framework and rules for service projects allowing proper stewardship, including the matters of investment and risk management. What are the Foundation s current goals? 2 P a g e

A: Eradicate Polio, reach $123M in the Annual Fund 2014/15 and, in the case of Endowment funds; Fund Rotary Peace Centres to the $125M level by June 2015 (at which level it will be self-sustaining) and increase the Endowment Fund to $1B by June 30, 2017 (the 100 th anniversary of the Rotary Foundation). How is the Foundation doing in meeting those goals? A: Polio: Great improvements have been in the reduction of new cases on an annual basis in most of the world but challenges remain, primarily in Nigeria, Afghanistan and Pakistan. Rotary met the Gates challenge (that released 2:1 fund matching) in 2013 and we are on track to meet the objective this year. With regard to the Rotary Peace and Endowment Fund, current pledged/committed donations are currently at 85 and 92 percent of the targets (respectively). Actions required? A: Polio: complete the job, continue education, make sure no child goes unvaccinated. Bill Gray reported Eradication of Polio will save $1.5B in health costs worldwide. Annual Fund: Increase the participation percentage, Paul Harris Fellows and online donations. Online donations are especially efficient, simplifying processing and reducing the associated costs. How the Foundation can play a role in each Club member s Rotary Legacy? Bill spoke about the impact Rotary has on the quality of each of our lives and suggested that part of our contemplation of the mark we make during our lifetime, we contemplate recognizing that importance through support of the Foundation. At some donation levels, there are opportunities to name a fund, providing an ongoing memorial demonstrating the importance of Rotary in the individual s life. Bill asked that Rotarians remember the Foundation at key milestones in their life or career, for example, the sale of a business, the creation or revision of a will, review of an insurance policy (the Foundation could be made the beneficiary), donation of investments, etc., suggesting that often our financial needs change throughout our life and that there may be opportunities to make donations that, while not so critical to those current needs, would benefit others through the work of Rotary. 3 P a g e

President Jodi thanked Bill for making the presentation, and initiated the traditional exchange of Club Banners. Bill outlined the historical and geographical symbolism of the Cataraqui-Kingston club banner, which recalls Kingston as the first National capital and indicated his appreciation of the historical reference of the Fort William banner. Bob Hookham helped the Club achieve its annual Foundation pledge by fining not only all Rotarians not currently slave to a salary but also those who did not know that famous ballerina Dame Margot Fonteyn de Arias was actually part of the Hookham clan, (being born Margaret Evelyn Hookham). Having emptied all (including his own, based on good news ) pockets, our Danseur noble (of the Rotary House Lottery) exited gracefully stage right... New Business: 4 P a g e

Jodi mentioned that the media announcement for this year s Christmas Parade had occurred Tuesday and that sponsorship of the Parade had been secured. Shelterhouse: Our commitment will be restarting Monday October 6. Any Rotarian wishing to assist would be welcomed please contact Solade Nicol. In addition, Solade indicated that the Fort William Rotary Christmas dinner at the Shelterhouse was scheduled for December 8, 2014 more information to follow. Membership Summit Series: the first presentation in this series is scheduled for next week, following the regular meeting. President Jodi requested an indication of intent from those planning to attend via . Octoberfest Event (Port Arthur Club): President Jodi asked that anyone planning to attend the Friday October 10 to contact her if Club members would like to sit together at a VIP table. A ten person commitment is required to secure a table, otherwise seating is random. Following the Octoberfest announcement, Craig Sandberg lead us in a spirited (if alcohol free) rendition of When the Saints go Marching In. Perhaps this song might be adopted as the theme song at the VIP table attendees, since President Jodi felt the performance sounded pretty good and apparently there is less inhibition regarding singing at Octoberfest. Lighter Side: Boris Cham amused us with a tale of a middle aged couple, neophytes in text messaging, with the romantic wife texting sweet nothings until the unimaginative husband brought it all to an abrupt end with a sobering question Our guest, Bill Gray agreed to pull the Foundation 50/50 Draw ticket. The pot contained $286 at the start of the draw and it will remain unchanged until next meeting, as Cynthia Judge both generously and most graciously left the Queen of Hearts in play until even more was raised for the Foundation. Coming Up Shelter House 6 October 2014 Come join members of our club volunteering at Shelter House, starting at 5pm. 5 P a g e
