1 Smart Policy Works SPW Instructional Training How to Better Serve Veterans

2 Veterans a fast-growing population that you should be tapping into and they are in your agency, whether you know it or not. Our trainings show you how to work with and outreach to Vets, getting more clients and providing clients with get better outcomes. These courses help you work with your Veteran clients in a counseling capacity, medical facility, case management, or a one-on-one or group encounter. They can be provided as professional development and offer Illinois CEUs for your LCSWs, LSWs, LMFTs, LCPCs, and others on your staff. SPW trainings provide military and civilian personnel with the information and skills needed to improve client outcomes: 57% of trainees report that they use concepts learned at an SPW training on a monthly basis, and 14% on a daily basis Over 99% of participants said they feel more prepared to handle a first disclosure of sexual assault 95% of participants would recommend the trainings to a colleague Target audiences include: Behavioral health providers (e.g. counselors, case managers, therapists) Healthcare providers (e.g. nurses, hospital social workers) Homeless providers (e.g. intake specialists, managers, case managers, social workers) Family members/survivors General community members (e.g. police officers, librarians) Military Victim Advocates (e.g. SHARP Specialists) Among those who have benefited from our trainings: The Department of Veterans Affairs and local VA Medical Centers Supportive Services for Veterans their Families grantees The Illinois Army National Guard Illinois Coalition against Sexual Assault National Organization for Victim Assistance You know you re in good hands because These award-winning seminars have had over 5,000 attendees and continue to serve Veteran and service communities all over the nation. SPW was listed in a congressional report as a prime example of a partnership between the Illinois National Guard and organizations geared toward assisting sexual assault victims in their recovery. The Council on Foundations listed SPW as an expert on Veterans issues in a recent white paper for a Congressional hearing. In final, SPW trained a sexual assault response coordinator from every state.

3 FULL WORKSHOPS Military Veteran 101: An Introduction to the Culture and Needs of Military and Veteran Families This workshop provides participants with an overview of military culture and its relevance to the needs of military and Veteran families. Participants may choose from 3-7 presentation topics to be discussed that are most relevant to their profession or area of expertise. Potential topics include military cultural norms and rankings, trauma-informed care, suicide prevention of Veterans and service members, substance abuse among Veterans and service members, prevention and response to MST survivors, and an overview of Veteran benefits. ( minutes, 3-7 CEUs) Target audience: community organizations, government organizations, healthcare providers, Military Sexual Trauma Workshop for Medical Professionals This training focuses on military culture and the medical impact of MST. The workshop explains rape culture and its impact on institutions and emphasizes the armed forces as a key institution. It helps participants understand how to assist survivors, at any point of their journey, by providing practices in disclosure, care, and supportive techniques. (240 minutes, 4 CEUs) Target audience: healthcare providers, Understanding Military Sexual Trauma for Behavioral Health Practitioners This workshop focuses on victim advocacy and the toxicity of MST through discussion about today s rape culture by providing first hand examples and stories. The presentation delves into topics of PTSD, substance abuse, and suicide as links to MST and how to clinically treat those patients as well as provide helpful therapies, such as music therapies. Participants gain a wide range of skills and take away a new knowledge of helping MST survivors in a clinical setting. (360 minutes, 6 CEUs) Target audience: general community members, Provider Skills for Serving Veteran Clients This multiday workshop focuses on enabling participants to effectively serve Veteran clients. Topics include effective communication skills, understanding client resistance, empowering clients in the achievement of goals set together, and how to prevent and address burnout. Participants discuss these topics and are presented with collaborative tools for measuring client life satisfaction and goal achievement. (480 minutes, 8 CEUs) Target audience:, healthcare providers, general community members

4 INDIVIDUAL COURSES A Call to Healthcare Providers: Working with MST Patients The prevalence and medical impact of MST is explained and participants learn about the different types of sexual assault reporting in the military. A case example is used to show the concrete steps that healthcare providers can take to help survivors. (120 minutes, 2 CEUs) Provider Perspective: Providing Grief Counseling and Resources to Military Families This workshop focuses on providing counseling to families that have lost a loved one through a military-related death. The role of military culture and the impact that the abrupt removal of a military support system can have on a grieving family are discussed. Participants come to understand the unique psychological and financial challenges faced by survivors and learn about resources available to families, such as line-of-duty compensation, services provided by vet centers, and survivor benefits for children, including scholarship. (120 minutes, 2 CEUs) Target audience: behavioral health providers, healthcare providers, homeless providers, financial counselors Empowering Your Clients In this workshop, participants learn how to help clients formulate visions for the future and how to encourage them to engage in self-advocacy. They are empowered with strategies to catalogue critical moves and ways to help clients reduce isolation and increase intimacy. Discussions cover life satisfaction and goal-setting tools that providers can use to help clients, with emphasis on partnering with clients to achieve goals set together. (120 minutes, 2 CEUs) Target audience:, healthcare providers WEBINAR SERIES Our most frequently requested webinars provide a quicker introduction and overview than our in-person trainings and are more easily accessible at participants convenience. Each session is 60 minutes long and provides 1 CEU. Introduction to Military and Veteran Culture This discussion explores the branches of the armed forces, discusses the importance of creating unit cohesion, and offers participants a look at a boot camp experience. (60 minutes, 1 CEU) Target audience: general community members, healthcare providers, behavioral health providers, homeless providers

5 Disability Benefits and Culture This webinar addresses Veteran benefits, explains the differences between SSI and SSDI, and shows how organizations can be more culturally sensitive to returning service members with disabilities. (60 minutes, 1 CEU) Civilian Healthcare Options for Military Members This training provides participants with in-depth detail about the ACA, enrollment, Medicaid, and Marketplace insurance. At the conclusion, participants understand who is eligible for which plans. (60 minutes, 1 CEU) Health Coverage for Veterans The webinar focuses on healthcare coverage options for Veterans, including Tricare, the Choice Act, CHAMPVA, as well as the role of the ACA and Medicare in coordination with Veterans benefits. (60 minutes, 1 CEU) Understanding Military Sexual Trauma The webinar provides an overview of MST, and how society s rape culture affects military settings. Participants learn how we work with survivors to help them overcome the toxicity caused by an assault. (60 minutes, 1 CEU) MST, Family and Intimacy This last webinar focuses on the effects of MST on relationships and ensuring shifts in family dynamics. The presentation discusses support mechanisms and healthy disclosure, and provides tips on how to help survivors reconnect and build relationships. (60 minutes, 1 CEU)
