1 2018 Annual Conference THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 1, 2018 Crowne Plaza Hotel 1741 Papermill Rd., Wyomissing, PA 19610
2 KEYNOTE SPEAKER: Cheryl Sharp Cheryl S. Sharp, MSW, ALWF is an Exclusive Consultant to the National Council for Behavioral Health Trauma-Informed Services and Suicide Prevention Efforts. As part of the trauma-informed care (TIC) team, Cheryl works nationally to facilitate TIC Learning Communities and is a content expert on trauma, resilience and TIC implementation. Her role as Exclusive Consultant for Suicide Prevention is to work nationally with National Council partners engaged in moving the needle on preventing suicide. Cheryl is a person in long term recovery from mental health and addiction challenges. She is a nine time suicide attempt survivor who believes that understanding what happened to people changes the conversation from what is wrong with them. Sharp has worked with adult trauma survivors for over 30 years and is passionate about the fact that people can and do recover and go on to live happy, healthy and productive lives. Prior to becoming an Exclusive Consultant for the National Council, Cheryl started and led all of the National Council s trauma-informed initiatives. She led On Our Own of Maryland s Statewide Consumer Networks as the WRAP Outreach Coordinator and was the Executive Director of the STAR Process located in Arizona, as well as serving on their Board of Directors. Sharp received her BA in Psychology and a BA in Women s Studies, followed by her Masters Degree in Social Work from East Carolina University in North Carolina. PANEL PRESENTATION: STORIES OF HEALING When a loved one s life is lost due to the disease of addiction, the family is often left in a state of devastated disbelief and grief. This can result in an overwhelming amount of stress and the ability to cope with the loss of the loved can be difficult. How individuals cope with the loss can look very different, but the loss exists just the same. A panel of trauma survivors will share their healing as it relates to the loss of a loved one. This year s panel discussion will be moderated by Lyndra Bills, M.D., Regional Medical Director for Community Care Behavioral Health Organization.
3 TRAUMA & ADDICTION: Healing the Hurt Anyone can experience trauma. In fact, many people encounter distressing physical, emotional, psychological or spiritual events or situations in their lives. There is no single way someone responds to such events or situations; trauma is unique to each person. The impact of trauma can significantly affect how one perceives themselves, and how they interact with the world around them. For those in the human services field, having adequate knowledge and understanding about the effects of trauma is necessary in order to provide effective and meaningful services. The 2018 Council on Chemical Abuse Annual Conference will examine trauma, especially as it relates to substance use disorders. Conference attendees will have the opportunity to gain knowledge and understanding of trauma, and hear about effective approaches that are used to address this condition. A dynamic keynote address, six informative workshop presentations, and an impactful panel discussion will shine the light on this very important and serious topic. It is going to be a day you will not want to miss. 4 WORKSHOPS WORKSHOP 1: Trauma An Introduction Presented by Cheryl Sharp, MSW, ALWF, National Council for Behavioral Health Trauma-Informed Services and Suicide Prevention Efforts It has become evident that human service professionals need to be aware of the effects of trauma. An estimated 70 percent of adults in the United States have experienced a traumatic event at least once in their lives. Untreated trauma can result in use of drugs and alcohol, poor physical health, and poor decision-making. This workshop will provide a basic understanding of trauma and identify specific skills to enhance the workshop participant s ability to interact in emotionally healthy ways with people impacted by trauma. WORKSHOP 2: Advances in Trauma Informed Care Presented by Wayne Roffer, Psy.D., Department of Veteran s Affairs How can we best assist our clients in not only overcoming their trauma-related behaviors and problems, but also in crafting rewarding, meaningful lives? This workshop will provide an overview of the prevalence of trauma and PTSD. Diagnostic criteria, assessment strategies, and evidenced-based interventions will be discussed. Participants will increase their competence in working with civilian and military/veteran trauma survivors. Discussion will also include integration of technology and smartphone applications in enhancing care. WORKSHOP 3: Current Drug Trends - A Regional Perspective Presented by Laura Hendrick, Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) - Philadelphia Division Misuse of prescription pills and cheap illegal drugs are causing disruptions within families, violations of the law, as well as overdose deaths. It is crucial that anyone who is involved in the safety and welfare of the community stay current on what is happening with regard to drug use trends. This workshop will inform participants of the latest efforts to combat the ever-evolving world of illegal drug use and abuse. WORKSHOP 4: Co-Occurring Disorders and Trauma Presented by David Loveland, Ph.D, Community Care Behavioral Health Organization (CCBH) All too often, treatment of substance use disorders, mental health and trauma have been addressed separately, or sequentially. Additionally, one disorder may have been ignored to treat the other, leaving the individual lacking adequate help. This workshop will provide an overview of effective treatment techniques for engaging individuals with co-occurring substance use disorders and trauma. A case presentation will be used to highlight strategies that can be used to engage individuals with a SUD who have been exposed to traumatic experiences, or have PTSD. The workshop will focus on simple steps to enhance collaboration, as well as provide direction through behavioral activation techniques for individuals who are difficult to engage in treatment.
5 WORKSHOP 5: Breaking the Pattern - Trauma and the Family Presented by Michele Pole, Ph.D., Caron Treatment Centers Experiencing trauma, abuse or neglect can have intergenerational effects that are influenced by both genetic vulnerabilities and the environment. Recognizing the scope of symptoms exhibited by the client is important, in order to best treat and/or support those who have a history of trauma. This workshop will identify the continuum of symptoms associated with responses to a traumatic event, abuse or neglect. The goal is to help foster a compassionate approach to the clients and/or loved ones with a trauma history. WORKSHOP 6: Healing Trauma through Mindfulness Presented by Martha Thompson, Psy.D., Empower the Mind, LLC. Traumatic events and their recall can produce physical, as well as psychological reactions. For many people, mindfulness practice provides refuge from the experience of traumatic recall. This workshop will offer an introduction to the use of mindfulness as an approach to helping individuals develop skills to manage the effects of trauma. CONFERENCE AWARD WINNERS Our 2018 conference award winners will be recognized during lunch.
