About Smile Train Smile Train is an international children s charity with a sustainable approach to a single, solvable problem: cleft lip and palate. Millions of children in developing countries with untreated clefts live in isolation, but more importantly, have difficulty eating, breathing and speaking. Cleft repair surgery is simple, and the transformation is immediate. Our sustainable model provides training, funding, and resources to empower local doctors in 85+ developing countries to provide 100%-free cleft repair surgery and comprehensive cleft care in their own communities. We use the teach a man to fish model focusing on training local doctors to perform cleft repairs in their communities. Those doctors then go on to train other doctors creating a longterm, sustainable system. Patients see their smile for the first time, parents cry tears of joy, lives and communities are changed forever. As a result of our efficiency and with the support of our donors and partners around the world, Smile Train has transformed the lives of more than one million children by giving them the power of a smile. We Provide Comprehensive Care With Your Help Children born with clefts need more than just surgery. They may also need dental care, orthodontic treatment, and speech therapy. Where these services are available, we do everything we can to make them available to our patients. 1
About Smile Train s Young Leadership Circle () Smile Train s Young Leadership Circle () is a group of professionals committed to furthering Smile Train s efforts to help children living with untreated clefts in the developing world. The holds fundraising events and educational programs throughout the year. The was created as a space for young professionals to engage with Smile Train. The group was founded in June 2014 with a kickoff event for 25 supporters at Smile Train s headquarters in New York City. Since then, the has hosted 500+ guests at events and has had 25+ people serve as board members. In addition to a thriving New York City chapter, the has an active presence in Los Angeles and San Francisco. We look forward to expanding to other cities across the U.S. 2
Board What Does It Mean to be a Board Member? Being a board member means being an integral part of a group of likeminded individuals who are focused on helping spread awareness about clefts, promoting Smile Train s cause and model, and providing new smiles for children around the world! Who are the Board Members? The is made up of a diverse group of people who are bound together by one common thread: their commitment to Smile Train. Our board members have varied backgrounds and work in finance, law, fashion, tech, public health and more. On average, the ages of our board members range from their mid-20 s to mid- 30 s. However, each of our board members brings a unique perspective to the table, regardless of age. We encourage anyone interested in becoming a part of the group to reach out and learn more. Some board members have a personal connection to cleft, either being born with one themselves or having a friend or family member who was born with a cleft. Other members chose to be involved with Smile Train because they believe strongly in our teach a man to fish model, or are interested in international healthcare. Each board member brings their own story and experience to the and that is what makes this such a strong and engaging group. What are the Board Member Responsibilities? board members serve two year terms. During this time, they both organize and attend board meetings, fundraising events and educational programs. They support Smile Train on social media and spread the word about Smile Train s programs to their friends, colleagues and networks. Whether it s through a personal connection to a Foundation, an innovative idea to create a partnership with their company or an engaging way to raise Smile Train s profile with a new audience, board members are empowered to make a difference. Unlike many other more traditional groups for young professionals, board members have the unique opportunity to build and direct this new program. As a group, they work closely with Smile Train staff to develop long term strategy for the. Our board members are a vital part of Smile Train s family. They receive exclusive invitations to organization wide events and the opportunity to interact with Smile Train executive staff. board members also have the opportunity to participate in a Mentorship Program which matches new members with veteran board members. The goal of this program is to create strong connections with our new members and to maximize each month of a board member s term. 3
Events Fundraising Events These are organized events that are held throughout the year in a variety of event spaces, bars, and restaurants in the cities in which we have chapters. Our fundraising events are opportunities for members to network, socialize and raise funds for Smile Train. Our signature fundraising event happens every October on World Smile Day. Educational Programs It s important for our members to understand how Smile Train s programs fit within the context of the larger global health community. The hosts educational programs throughout the year for our members to learn more about our medical programs and innovative projects in education, training and comprehensive care. Board Member Events All board members are required to either host one independent fundraising event or to serve as co-chair for one organized event. Get creative with your fundraising event! So far our board members have hosted a yoga class, bingo night, a birthday party, happy hours and more. It s time for everyone to take a step back, look outside of themselves and ask the simple question: What can I do to help? Alejandra Gonzalez 4 YOUNG LEADERSHIP CIRCLE

Innovative Technology and Economic Impact Study The Virtual Surgery Simulator To provide essential training to surgeons in the developing world, Smile Train developed the first-ofits-kind Virtual Surgery Simulator, a freely available, web accessible surgical simulator providing free instruction for cleft lip and palate repair from some of the world s premiere surgeons. This awardwinning technology provides users anywhere in the world with essential information about cleft anatomy and surgical techniques for cleft lip and palate repair using interactive animated graphics, clear written and oral instructions and actual intra-operative surgical video footage. By joining Smile Train s Young Leadership Circle, I can dedicate my time and energy to a meaningful cause that impacts people s lives in such a positive way. Brooke Marinovich The Simulator is an exciting partnership among leaders in medicine, philanthropy, and technology to create an innovative solution to the challenges of training cleft surgeons internationally. It serves as an important reference for surgeons worldwide by providing a long-term scalable solution to the global health problem of cleft lip and palate. By empowering developing nations to become less dependent on outside aid, the Simulator represents a model for the future of surgical training internationally as well as virtual surgical training within the United States. To date, the Simulator is used in 112+ countries and has been featured at TEDMED, The Hive and South by Southwest Interactive. The Economic Impact of Cleft Lip and Palate Treatment For as little as $250 committed toward one cleft repair surgery, as much as $50,000 is put back into the local economy as former cleft patients go on to contribute to economic productivity and lead full, productive lives in their communities, according to a study leveraging Smile Train s data 1 that was published in The World Journal of Surgery. This amounts to a more than 200x return on investment for a single cleft repair. 9
The total economic impact achieved as a result of Smile Train s cleft repair surgeries globally measured from across 83 countries where Smile Train has a footprint amounts to as much as $20 billion, according to the study. Investment in cleft lip and palate surgical repair has resulted in tremendous economic gain for low and middle-income countries, shining a light on the impact and cost-effectiveness of surgical interventions globally, said Dr. Scott Corlew one of the study s authors. Cleft repair surgery significantly lowers a country s surgical disease burden by allowing patients to return to economic productivity and meaningfully participate in their societies, creating a more prosperous and resilient global community. The independent study Economic Valuation of the Global Burden of Cleft Disease Averted by a Large Cleft Charity measures the economic impact of cleft repair surgery over a ten-year period and quantify the impact of its global surgical work. The study is one of the most comprehensive analyses to date into the economic and public health value of cleft lip and palate repairs in the developing world. More information about the study and its methodology can be found here. 1 Economic Valuation of the Global Burden of Cleft Disease Averted by a Large Cleft Charity Dan Poenaru, Dan Lin, Scott Corlew World Journal of Surgery May 2016, Volume 40, Issue 5, pp YOUNG LEADERSHIP CIRCLE 10
Smile Train in the Media W Magazine talks about how Christie Brinkley helped light the Empire State Building with Smile Train, and how her skincare line is helping children with clefts. 12/2/2015 Reality star and beauty mogul, Kylie Jenner created her newest lip kit shade Smile in collaboration with Smile Train. Kylie will donate 100% of the net proceeds to Smile Train to help children with clefts. 9/30/2016 After actress Lucy Hale asked for donations to Smile Train in lieu of birthday gifts, she took the partnership a step further with a trip to Mexico City, and InStyle got a look inside her life-changing journey. 9/13/2016 Smile Train s CEO, Susannah Schaefer is quoted with tips on how nonprofit organizations can grow. 8/13/2016 International Business Times discusses cleft lip and palate in Ghana and how cleft treatment can change lives and boost local economies. 5/15/2016 Kodjo, who s four, was born with a cleft and doomed to be drowned until Dr. Solomon Obiri-Yeboah, in the blue shirt, performed surgery to correct the birth defect. 4/11/2016 The statistics and information included in this packet regarding Smile Train s work represent aggregate data compiled from Smile Train Inc. and all of its affiliated entities worldwide.
