1 CMG Times Issue No 13: Jan/Feb 2017 Happy new year and welcome to the 13th edition of CMG Times which is our newsletter dedicated to family members of people we support in CMG. I hope you enjoy reading it. Peter Kinsey, CEO Achievement Awards for people we support 2017 We are in the process of organising our Awards Ceremony 2017 which will take place on April 21st, to recognise the people we support who have made excellent achievements in any of the following categories: Best Achievement in Paid Employment How you can nominate Family members can nominate their loved ones by completing the attached form, choosing a category and giving reasons for why they think that individual should win. Forms can be posted to Sue Pym on the address stated on the form. Alternatively you can sue.pym@cmg.co.uk with your nomination. (Nominations of people we support can also be made by staff, external professionals and other service users). A CMG judging panel will then look at all the entries and pick finalists who will be invited to attend the ceremony along with their family members. People we support who are finalists gather with staff and family members to celebrate their achievements. Alongside a 3-course dinner and a disco, people we support are awarded a personally engraved trophy by the Chairman of CMG. 1

2 CMG celebrates 20 years! CMG celebrated its 20th anniversary year in style in 2016 by holding two fantastic events - one in England and one in Wales. In England we held a Festival of Celebration which included live performances by an excellent band playing on stilts, circus performers with people having the opportunity to try out circus equipment, Zoolab and a great dance routine by our very own drama group, The Brelade Players. In Wales, we held a Festival of Peace and Positivity with a full programme of activities including Welsh Factor singing competition, art therapy workshops, poetry, photography, Zumba classes and a baking competition. CMG started in 1996 with just two residential services in Epsom, Surrey as a result of the closure of long stay hospitals in the area and has become a leading learning disability care provider with over 120 homes in England and Wales. 2

3 CMG services rated in the new CQC inspections Here are the ratings to date for CMG services (since the new inspection ratings were introduced by the CQC): Outstanding x 3 CMG services Good x 70 CMG services Requires improvement x 5 CMG services These ratings put CMG well ahead of the national average in England. Our Welsh services are inspected by CSSIW. All CMG s Welsh services currently have no requirements for improvements. If you would like a full list of the CMG services that have been rated under the new CQC ratings process, please contact sue.pym@cmg.co.uk Pledging to make changes at Driving Up Quality Roadshows! Many people we support made pledges at each of our Driving Up Quality Roadshows in 2016 to make positive changes to their lives. At each event we focussed on giving out tools and advice in five key areas which we know are important in helping to enhance their lives. These were: 1. Coping with emotions 2. Being healthy 3. Relationships 4. Being out and about 5. Gaining employment People we support then made pledges on our pledge tree. These pledges are being followed up by managers to ensure they are actioned. Here are a few examples of pledges made and subsequent action taken: Pledge I want to join more clubs Do more baking and see if we can sell the cakes Action A is looking into visits to the RSPCA to spend time with animals. He has also phoned a local knitting group with a view to joining. J has given samples of cakes to charity shop to see if they will sell them I want to use an emotions board An emotions board has been developed for the service Cut down on chocolate and do H has lost half a kilo in the last month and hydrotherapy sessions have more stretching exercises been booked for the New Year More deaf clubs to meet new people A local coffee shop has agreed to host an evening gathering and is also looking to host inclusive movie nights 3

4 CMG talks to Michael Fullerton, CMG s Clinical Director, about some of the latest national best practice initiatives for people with learning disabilities STOMPLD (Stopping Over-Medication of people with learning disabilities). CMG is committed to the reduction of psychotropic medication for people with a learning disability. These medicines can often be prescribed in learning disability services, when a person presents with a challenging behaviour rather than a mental illness. It is estimated that on an average day in England, between 30,000 and 35, 000 adults with a learning disability are prescribed an antipsychotic, an antidepressant, or both in the absence of a mental health condition. A substantial proportion of those people could have their medicines reduced or withdrawn with alternative strategies e.g. Positive Behaviour Support. Psychotropic medicines are those which are designed to affect chemicals in the brain to impact on mood, emotions and behaviour e.g. Antidepressants, Anti- Anxiety, Antipsychotics, Mood Stabilisers, Stimulants. What can we do to reduce the use of psychotropic medication? In CMG we are focussing on strategies to help reduce the use of medication for people we support by asking managers to implement the following strategies: Be familiar with the STOMPLD commitment (see NHS England website ) Be aware of and monitor the prescription of any regular and/or PRN psychotropic medicine for anyone we support. Ensure all medicines are effectively reviewed in partnership with the prescriber and service user. Ensure the person has a good Support Plan with a focus on Total Communication, Positive Behaviour Support, Active Support, engagement in meaningful activity, the person s aspirations etc. Actively demonstrate a commitment to the reduction of psychotropic medication. STOMPLD is a commitment for the Royal College of GP s, Royal Pharmaceutical Society, Royal College of Nursing, Royal College of Psychiatrists, Challenging Behaviour Foundation. 4

5 Issue 12: Jan/Feb 17 CMG signs up to the Health Charter for Social Care Providers CMG had signed the Health Charter for Social Care to pledge to commit to all the key points within the Charter. The Charter has been developed by Public Health England, alongside VODG, NDTi, National Care Forum and Mencap. This is in response to concerns that people with a learning disability have worse health than the general population and can die earlier (men 13 yrs earlier, women 20 years earlier). Signing the Charter requires each CMG service to follow the pledges, and we will complete an organisational self assessment. This will link in with the annual Driving Up Quality Self Assessment. Information, including easy read, is on the website A key way in which CMG is supporting to ensure good health, is through a training workshop that we run for managers and support staff called Supporting Good Health. This covers most of the key aspects of the Charter. The Charter includes: All staff understand and apply the principles of the Mental Capacity Act Listen to, respect and involve families Provide ongoing training to staff on basic health and wellbeing issues including pain recognition, specific syndromes and health conditions Provide health information that is accessible to people we support Promote access to screening tests Facilitate access to annual health checks Ensuring everyone has a health action plan and hospital passport If a person has more than one long term health condition, including mobility issues, we will request that a healthcare coordinator is made available and named in the person s health action plan Make sure all staff, people we support and families are aware of the Health Charter In CMG we hold an annual athletics championship to help promote health and wellbeing 5

6 Relative Quality Checking call for siblings and parents CMG has a number of relatives who support quality improvement by completing quality checks on CMG services. These are voluntary, unannounced and using a checking tool that has been designed by the group. We are keen to seek new Relative Checkers and are particularly keen to identify more siblings. Most relative checkers are parents, with only one sibling i.e. the sister of someone CMG support. Lucy is in her early twenties and is in University. As a sibling, she brings a different perspective to the quality checking role to parents and it is great to have that viewpoint.
