6 EACR President Anton Berns is President of the EACR and former Director of Research at the Netherlands Cancer Institute (NKI) I became President of the EACR last summer succeeding Richard Marais, whose term of office spanned a period of change and growth for the Association, including the milestone of reaching 10,000 members. I am proud to pick up from Richard and continue his work to lead the development of the EACR and to contribute to the advancement of progress in cancer research. The EACR wants to inspire the next generation of scientists to do bold and rigorous cancer research. page 10). There is a natural link between our organisations and we are keen to work together to enable even greater cooperation and exchange of ideas between basic and translational researchers and their clinical colleagues. We hope to meet you all at the next ESMO Congress in Madrid, September 2017, which will bring researchers and clinicians together! The EACR will also continue its partnership with the AACR, organising the second edition of the EACR-AACR-SIC Special Conference on the Challenges of Optimising Immuno and Targeted Therapies (24-27 June 2017, Florence, Italy), building on the success of the first conference. EACR Biennial Congress We are very grateful for all of the positive feedback we ve received so far from participants at EACR24 in Manchester last July: 98% of participants would recommend the Congress to others, and the scientific programme received a 99% satisfaction rating! New Board members and EACR strategic plan The General Assembly held during EACR24 saw the election of several new members to the EACR Board, which now totals 13 members and officers. I would like to take this opportunity to thank again those members whose terms of office came to an end in 2016: Moshe Oren, EACR President from , Clare Isacke, former Secretary General, and Donatella Del Bufalo. Their contributions to the EACR mission were immense and greatly appreciated. The Board has been working with the EACR office on a new five-year strategic plan, to ensure that we are doing all we can to support our members and to secure the EACR s long-term success. We have had some interesting and lively discussions and I look forward to sharing the plan with you soon. Please take the time to let us know what you think. The next EACR Congress - EACR25 - will be held in my home city of Amsterdam, Netherlands, from 30 June to 03 July The Scientific Programme Committee has already identified the key topics and themes for discussion and debate, and invitation letters have been sent to the world-class speakers that we hope will join us. EACR25 will be a very special Congress celebrating the EACR s 50 th anniversary year and we have some innovative ideas to make it a highly stimulating meeting for all participants. We are particularly excited to be introducing a one-day medical education track designed to provide oncologists and clinicians with the information they need on basic and translational science. Make sure you save the date! I look forward to working with you as President of the EACR and I wish you every success in your professional endeavours. 8 Message from the Secretary General 10,000 members Joan Seoane is Secretary General of the EACR and Director of Translational Research at Vall d Hebron Institute of Oncology (VHIO), Spain Welcome to all our new members, and thank you to those who continue to value their membership. We are proud to announce that we now count 10,626 members in 101 countries and six continents: it would be enough cancer researchers to fill over 25 Boeing 747s, 216 buses or 5,313 tandem bikes! We have dedicated a section of this Yearbook to our members on pages We hope that you are enjoying the new EACR membership benefits that we have recently introduced: you can now share your achievements and potential collaborations in the Community Corner section of our fortnightly e-news bulletin, we launched our Image of the Month competition to give you the opportunity to demonstrate your research with meaningful pictures, and we have expanded our free registrations initiative so that you can enter draws to win free registrations at external conferences. EACR members survey At the start of every year we run a members survey to find out how we are doing and to get some ideas for new ways to support you: thank you to all of those who took the time to complete the 2017 edition. We were delighted that once again, 98% of our respondents said they would recommend EACR membership to others. One of the most valued benefits remains our fortnightly e-news bulletin, informing you about latest news, jobs and cancer research conferences. You told us that you also value the reduced registration rates at the EACR Congress, EACR Conference Series and our other meetings with partner organisations. There are more details from the survey on page 9. EACR Conference Series We are really proud of our Conference Series. Conferences in the Series are small and focused, and give many opportunities for participants to interact with speakers and with each other. They are an important part of the EACR s activities and we have never been so active: we have seven conferences planned for 2017, with a similar number coming in The conferences are extremely popular: 99% of participants would recommend the conference they attended to others, and satisfaction with the quality of the scientific content is also more than 90%. We have introduced popular new features to enhance networking at our conferences: speed networking events, round table discussion forums and Meet the Expert sessions, and in 2017 we are planning poster spotlight sessions to enable young researchers to present their work. You can view a report from the 2016 conferences, as well as a list of those planned on pages We always have a number of bursaries available to help members attend these conferences, and all members are eligible for reduced registration rates. Joan Seoane s talk at the EACR24 Congress in Manchester, July Travel Fellowships We are also proud of our Travel Fellowship programme, which has been providing opportunities for early-career scientists to advance their research since Co-sponsored by Worldwide Cancer Research, the programme supports the development of researchers through visits to centres of excellence or participation in specialised practical workshops and courses. This valuable opportunity is exclusively available to early-career EACR members. So far, we have supported researchers from 37 countries with over half a million euros of funding. Ambassador Programme The EACR Ambassador Programme is growing annually with more than 385 Ambassadors based in 66 different countries! 10 EACR partnership with ESMO From bench to bedside In 2015 we entered into an exciting new partnership with the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO), the leading European professional organisation for medical oncologists. Our partnership brings together perspectives from both sides of the lab bench and enables cooperation and exchange of ideas between basic and translational researchers and their clinical colleagues. ESMO 2017 in partnership with the EACR Integrating science into oncology for a better patient outcome The opportunity is to bring clinicians and scientists together in a variety of different forums, in formal meetings and informal discussions, and start asking each other the questions that matter for the cancer patients. Richard Marais, EACR Past President the symposium in 2016 and repeated the offer by helping eight EACR members to attend the second edition in CAREFOR project The EACR also collaborates with ESMO on European research initiatives such as the CAREFOR project, a joint partnership between the EACR, the EORTC and ESMO, along with other European and international organisations, patient advocacy groups, umbrella organisations, societies, national groups, numerous cancer centres and non-european guests. The ultimate goal of CAREFOR is to institutionalise academic cancer clinical research in the European landscape. We are looking forward to further developing our partnership with ESMO in the coming months. An important part of our partnership with ESMO is our active collaboration on the 2017 and 2019 ESMO congresses. With over 20,000 delegates expected, the ESMO 2017 Congress in Madrid (08-12 September 2017) is a fantastic opportunity for clinicians and cancer researchers to gather and promote collaboration and innovation, from the laboratory to the bedside and back.
