Our objectives are to improve the quality of, and promote the cost-effectiveness of, government meetings. 1

2 The President s View by Jeanne Larson Hello SGMP Northern Lights Members! It was so good to see so many of you and your guests at our Holiday Party on December 12! It was a fantastic success! Congratulations to all of our award winners. The Silent Auction raised enough money to cover several partial planner scholarships to the NEC! Thank you to Joan Hane and the Radisson Blu Hotel Mall of America for going way above and beyond to support this event. When I was researching for the Year in Review I was a little surprised, and quite impressed, at the extent of our Chapter accomplishments in Fitting as 2017 was also our 20th Chapter Anniversary that we would be stepping it up! Programming reached a new level of excellence, so thank you for your support via your participation. Thank you, too, to all who made the logo redesign, website change to StarChapter, 20th Anniversary event planning and growing your Chapter Board possible! It takes all of us. We are working hard to further grow our Chapter in 2018! You can help by promoting SGMP to potential members. You can do so by forwarding a copy of this newsletter and the website link to our SGMP Is video. Please consider inviting potential planners to check out a meeting, which is complimentary. We are confident that once they experience the great education, networking, and resources at a monthly meeting, they will be interested in joining SGMP. 4 CHERYL HUNSTOCK, 1ST VICE PRESIDENT Is it just me or has the year just flown by? I can t believe I am writing this programming update and 2018 is just around the corner. I am pleased with the programming we had in 2017 and anticipate just as good, if not better, programming for With your help we can achieve this! Our October Northern Lights meeting was Wednesday, October 18, at the Embassy Suites in St. Paul. The topic was Planning Meetings Around Religious Holidays and the core competency was Programming & Education. We had several speakers; Timothy Herme, the Catering Manager at the Embassy Suites, Pastor Rick Summy for the Christian faith perspective, Steve Hurvitz for the Jewish faith perspective and Tamim Saidi for the Muslim faith perspective. All the speakers touched on aspects of their religion that we as planners and suppliers will benefit from knowing and incorporating into our event planning. From the evaluation form comments, many of you came away from the session with great ideas and a different way of looking at planning for an event. The November meeting was on November 16 at the Minneapolis Northwest CVB Office. The speaker was Sheila Krejci, of Sheila K Training, Inc. and author of The Engaging Expert: FieldBook for Occasional Speakers and Accidental Trainers. The focus of the presentation was to learn new ideas for presentation openers, energizers, closers and evaluation tools to immediately apply to your next presentation. We learned what participants need to do rather than what they need to know as a result of each presentation. We didn t have a December program as it was time to celebrate a great year at our annual Holiday Party at the Radisson Blu in Bloomington. A fabulous time was had by all and it was a wonderful way to close out Thank you to all that were able to attend. You are why our chapter is so successful and growing! As 2018 approaches, our January 18 program is at the University of Minnesota Continuing Education and Conference Center. Our very own Hannah Mergl, the Sales Manager at the DoubleTree Bloomington, will be giving a presentation on Meeting Planning Timelines. We all know how important timelines are in the work we do and I m sure Hannah will shed some light on some factors we may not have considered when planning an event from both the planner and the supplier perspective. As always, our Northern Lights programming success wouldn t happen without the support of our membership. Thank you for attending meetings and supporting this organization. 5 NICOLE MCMAHON, FOUNDATIONS COMMITTEE UPDATE The January meeting will feature the White Elephant Gift game! Will you or did you receive any unique Christmas gifts that you d like to re-gift? Bring them wrapped to the January meeting and donate them for our white elephant event. Don t forget your $10 bills so you can bring home some new treasures! Here s how it works: donate your wrapped present, spend $10 and get a number. People will pick presents in numerical order. Number one picks a gift, then #2 can steal #1 s gift or choose from the pile. If a gift gets stolen then that person can choose another one from the pile or steal someone else s, and so on! All money raised will go toward our scholarship fund. ANNETTE BELDING, CHARITY COMMITTEE UPDATE Family! Our chapter understands the importance of family and what that support means to individuals. Because of this, we designated the month of November as our service project month. Items were collected for our charity Second Stork, which provides critical items free of charge and with no strings attached to parents of newborns in need across Minnesota. Our family of SGMP members gave over 35 items consisting of baby blankets, baby clothing, and other items for newborns. In December we passed the baby bottle once more at our holiday party and we are so thankful that we have such giving and caring SGMP family members. Since June 2017, we have collected $ for Second Stork! Here is what $ will buy right now for Second Stork and their recipients: *3,000 diapers *200 Newborn shirts *100 Baby Blankets Please remember our families in need each time we pass the baby bottle at our monthly meetings through May

6 SUE HUMPHREY, MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE UPDATE Northern Lights Membership Report Running now through April 30, 2018, SGMP has launched its Superheroes Circle national membership contest. SGMP superheroes unite! The top planner and supplier securing the most new SGMP members will each receive a complimentary registration to the 2018 NEC in Norfolk, As a chapter, our goal is to achieve and maintain a 50/50 membership ratio between planners and suppliers. Continue to invite potential planners to future chapter meetings. 7 SGMP HEADQUARTERS UPDATE: NATIONAL EDUCATION CONFERENCE The Society of Government Meeting Professionals (SGMP) is hosting the 36th National Education Conference (NEC) in Norfolk, VA on June 5-7, The event will be hosted at the Norfolk Waterside Marriott with hotel blocks at the Marriott, Sheraton Norfolk Waterside Hotel, and Hilton Norfolk. The Certified Government Meeting Professional (CGMP) designation class will be offered. The class is designed for planners and suppliers whose work is governed by the rules and regulations of the federal government. If you are interested in finding out more or registering, please contact Garland Preddy at the National SGMP office. Stay tuned for more information about chapter scholarship applications. The NEC is the largest annual event in the government meetings industry and is where government professionals from across the country come together for a onestop and non-stop education, resources and networking. 7

8 NOVEMBER MEETING RECAP: Six Essentials to Move Audiences to Action Speaker: Sheila Krejci, M Ed President of Sheila K Training, Inc. Location: Minneapolis NW CVB Office Before giving a presentation, it s important to do your homework and know your audience. Preparation is key! Of course, asking attendees what role they re in is important too. One interesting tidbit that impacted me from Sheila s presentation is that the presenter should perform to an audience rather than presenting. This is done with eye contact (not reading slides), body movement, and energy exhibited from the speaker. As you begin a presentation, hooking the audience is imperative, get them engaged physically and mentally, and help them relate to the content by providing examples that fit within their industry. Also, slides should re-enforce what the speaker is talking about. With that said, constructing a presentation should always point to the end. Ask yourself, What is the ultimate goal? How will the content be tied together at the end of the presentation? Since audiences retain very little information, make sure to emphasize key content. Summarizing content is an effective tool for audiences to retain information, but let the audience members answer what they learned. 8
