2 Introduction ThefirsteducationalactivityonMinimalInvasiveSurgerywasconductedinSoba UniversityHospital,Khartoum,Sudan.Itwasaresoundingsuccessduetomanyfactors thatcollatedoveraperiodoftime.thedrivebyfigo,thesponsorshipbyolympus,the choiceofthecountry,facultyandcandidatesallcontributedtothisunquestionable achievement. ThisworkshophassettheoptimalstandardforfutureactivitiesbyFIGO. Theobjectiveshavebeenmetandthelitmustestpassedwithflyingcolors. AgreementwithFIGOandOlympus TheConsultancyAgreementreflectedthecommitmentbyallpartiestoeducationand trainingofdoctorsandthewillingnesstoreachoutforthemwherevertheyare.such commitmentwillreflectpositivelyonwomen'shealthandwellbeing,asadvocatedby FIGO Workshop Dates:28February 1March2012 Venue:SkillCentreatSobaUniversityHospital. TheCentrewasspacious,wellequippedandhaddifferenthallsforvariousfunctions.It alsohadanadequatelecturehallandanexcellente LearningCentre.Thefuture developmentplansaresoontobeimplementedtoincludeananimallab. Thestaffwereefficient,cooperativeandalwayspleasant.Thereisnodoubtthatthey willreachoptimumstandardswithtimeandexposure.asthecentrecontinuestogrow, moresecretariatandcoordinatorswillbeneededtoensureexpectedhighstandards. TheITpersonnelandBiomedwerealwaysavailableandperformedwell.Morewillbe neededasthecentrecontinuestogrow. 2

Therewerealsopreoperativemeetingstoassesspatient'ssuitabilityforlivesurgery Thefacultywerefullycommittedandefficientlyexecutedtheobjectivesofthe workshopsasplanned. Thepositivityofthefacultymustbenoted Candidates Thenumberwas12.Suchanumberisthecorrectoneandshouldnotbe exceededinthefuture.thefacultymanagedtoaddresstheneedsofeach candidateefficientlyandwithoutcompromise.thebenefitsweretherefore maximized. ThecandidatescamefromdifferentareasofSudanandwill,inthefuture,come fromdifferentafricancountries. Thecandidateswerealmosthomogeneousinmedicalknowledge,surgicalskills andaptitude.thebenefitswerethereforeequallyshared.thisconfirmsthat screeningofcandidateswasefficientandwithoutbias 3
4 BasicObjectivesoftheWorkshop TheworkshopwasdesignedtobeaBasicDryLabforMinimalInvasiveSurgery.The objectiveswereforthecandidatestoattainknowledgeandskillsin: knowledgeofhardwareandsoftware. HandEyeCoordination PelvicAnatomy BasicsofSuturing Theuses,safetyandpitfallsofElectrosurgery ComplicationsandpitfallsofMinimalInvasiveSurgery Thesewereaddressedadequatelyandindetailintheallottedstationsandlectures( whichweredeliveredbyinternationalfaculty). ThecandidateswerefullyinstructedbyfacultyOnthefirstdayandforbasic Hysteroscopyontheafternoonofthesecondday.TheywerethengivenFreeHand sessions,underdirectsupervisionbyfacultyonthenextday. Thosebasicobjectivesweremet. LiveSurgery SixLivesurgerieswereperformedbyInternationalFaculty: o LaparoscopicSubtotalHysterectomy o LaparoscopicOvarianCystectomy o DiagnosticLaparoscopyforPelvicPain o OperativeHysteroscopicResectionOfIntra UterineAdhesions (Asherman'sSyndrome) o LaparoscopicAssessmentofsuspectedOvarianCyst 4
5 o ManagementofTrueStressIncontinencewithTVT O Some(4t5)ofthecandidatesassistedactivelyintheoperativeprocedures Thelivesurgerieswereperformedwiththeobjectivesofdemonstratingbasicsof MinimalInvasiveSurgery.Thoseobjectivesweremet. twoofthelivesurgeriesweresuccessfullytelecastedandtherestwerewell attended ThemainORs(PediatricDivisionORs)wereofgoodstandardandsatisfiedthe objectivesofminimalinvasivesurgery.howeveradedicatedgynecologyorfor MinimallyInvasiveSurgeryistrulyneeded. AnesthesiaandAnesthetistsprformancewereadequateandhighlyacceptable TheNursingORstaffwereinadequatelypreparedandlackedknowledgeof MinimalInvasiveSurgerysoftware. Peterhadtoworkexceptionallyhardto makesurethattheequipmentsarehandledproperly.hiscontributiontothat dayshouldmakehimandolympusproud. AtlasCompany: MrAliAbuShammaandhisstaff(MrDoleebandothers)executedtheirexpectedroles admirably.theywereprofessional,caringandpleasant.theywerepresentthroughoutthe workshopandduringlivesurgery. TravelandAccommodation: TravelarrangementswereadequateexceptforthereturnjourneyofDrSaeedAlSary whohadtobeineconomyclassinsteadofbusinessclass. AccommodationwasexcellentinRottanaHotelwhichhadalltherequiredandexpected facilitiesofa5starhotel. Olympus: MrPeterHawkinsrepresentedOlympusinitsbest.Hishighlyprofessionalattributes, dedication,knowledge,excellentcommunicationskills,pleasantnessanddowntoearth attitudemadeiteasyformyselfanddrsaeedtocreateasuccessfulworkingteam.we seemedtounderstandwhatwasrequiredandsortoutacuteproblemswithoutfussor tensions,atruerecipeforsuccess. 5
