2 Professor MOHAMMAD RASHED ALFAGIH Cardiac Research Mohammad AlFagih Research Award for Cardiovascular Sciences is a prestigious award aimed at recognizing and supporting researchers in our country who demonstrate innovation and excellence in cardiovascular research. The award will serve to recognize dedication and hard work of researchers, and to provide opportunities to achieve excellence in cardiovascular research. We strongly encourage you to actively contribute by presenting your research work in the upcoming 23rd Saudi Heart Association Conference. The Award: 50,000 Saudi Riyals Will be awarded to the best abstract during the opening ceremony of SHA23 on 27 January, The abstract will be judged based on the following criteria: Novelty. Major impact on health care. Scientific content, methodology, and validity of conclusions. 3 Introduction Cardiac centers in Saudi Arabia over the last thirty years of development collectively have achieved a high standards in the area of diagnosing and treating cardiac diseases. For this they got an international recognition they deserve. Unfortunately this has not been associated with significant contribution in the area of medical research in either of its clinical or basic branches. This was not the case in the centuries of the height of Muslim civilization as stated in the following writing of international contemporary scholars of history of the world and medicine. Dr. Bernard Lewis, British Historian, Prof. of Near East Studies at Princeton University, USA in his book "What Went Wrong" published 2002 pages 6 & 7 stated: (At the peak of Islamic power Islam created a world civilization, poly ethnic, multiracial, international, one might even say intercontinental). (for centuries the world view and self view of Muslims seemed well grounded inheriting the knowledge and skills of the ancient middle east to this rich inheritance, scholars and scientists in the Islamic world added an immensely important contribution through their own observations, experiments and ideas in most of the arts and sciences of civilization. Medieval Europe was a pupil and in a sense of dependent of the Islamic world. (It has achieved the highest level so far in human history in the arts and sciences of civilization). Prof. Albert S. Lyons and Dr. Josephe Petricelli from the Mt. Sinai Medical School at New York in their book "MEDICINE and Illustrated History" published in 1987, pages 295, 298, 301 stated: (It was their respect for learning that caused the Arab conquerors to become the fountain of knowledge during those many centuries that Latin Europe had little contact with ancient writings). (Many have characterized Arabic contributions to medicine as principally preservation and compilation but this fail to recognized the lasting, original contributions of the Islamic thinkers They were responsible for the establishment of pharmacy and chemistry as sciences). (Arabic technique of distillation, crystallization, solution, sublimation, reduction and calcinations were to become the essential processes of pharmacy and chemistry). (The development of efficient hospitals was an outstanding Arabic contribution to medicine). (A physician acquired his training in a teaching center or an affiliated hospital, and has received certification from his teachers). (There was a little prejudice against the non Muslims). And then for the last few centuries the Arab and the Muslim world abandoned the respect for learning and innovation in the field of science and art in practice and research. Unaware of the advent of the others particularly the west ended up to this low level we are in now. In an attempt to re ignite the spark for innovation and meaningful medical research, this matter was discussed with the colleagues at the King Fahad Cardiac Center, King Saud University and this prize came to live as a way of encouragement to excel in this field of medical research.

4 Organization The Award sponsored by King Fahad Cardiac Center, King Saud University, started It is suggested to be a joint award with the Saudi Heart Association to be given at the Annual Meeting on Saudi Heart Association. The purpose of the award is to encourage research at the area of cardiovascular diseases so that we contribute to the international efforts in combating cardiac diseases Award management The award will be managed by a Board of Trustees chaired by a representative of King Saud University, King Fahad Cardiac Center. With a membership of : 1. Representative of the Saudi Heart Association 2. Three members from the three different institutions (not necessary medical) 3. Dr. Mohammad Alfagih or representative One of the members will be general secretary. Deadline The deadline for qualifying to Prof. Mohammad Rashed Alfagih Cardiovascular Research Award will be announced each year and for this upcoming year it is the abstract deadline for the SAH23. Abstract format Draft of the guidelines for the structuring of the abstract to standardize the method of evaluation. Evaluation Draft of a standard form for the judges to be used in the process of evaluation. The Judges Three judges will be appointed by the board of trustees toevaluate the research work. Secretariat An office will be allocated along with a secretary to ensure the organization of paperwork and communication. Call for nomination Announcement will be organized through the award office and will be a joint call between King Fahad Cardiac center and Saudi Heart Association.

5 Abstract Structure The abstract should be written in a structured form, the organization of the abstract should include (at its most basic form) the following headings: OBJECTIVE METHODS RESULTS CONCLUSION Objectives The researcher should consider the overall purpose of the research or what is he/she trying to learn or demonstrate. Methods Summarize the way the researcher will proceed in answering the question or hypothesis. The type of study, example Systemic review (Meta Analysis), Randomized Controlled Trial, Cohorts Study etc.. The population and the setting. The Evaluation The evaluation will be based on the objectives, methods and the discussion of the results in relation to the objective of the research. Summary 1. Formulate a research question or hypothesis and refine it for an objective. 2. Consider the method you will use to answer the question including the population and setting, the research design, any instrument you might use. 3. Once you have carried out your research, analyze the data you have collected and summarize it in your results section. 4. Prepare your conclusion to inspire others. Results Most research often does not report any dramatic or unexpected results but the researcher have professional responsibility to report whatever it was the results produces. At the time of submitting the abstract the results should be ready and included. Conclusion The conclusion should be one or two sentences in length answering the research question and placing the answer in perspective. It can include any areas for further research or question for future use. In the other hand, itshould not introduce any information or ideas not already described elsewhere in the structure abstract.
