6 Women s Health Update Speaker Biographies Dr. Yaa Amankwah, MD Obstetrician-Gynecologist, Division of General Obstetrics and Gynecology, The Ottawa Hospital Assistant Professor, University of Ottawa Dr. Yaa Amankwah is an Obstetrician-Gynaecologist in the Division of General Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Ottawa Hospital. She is an Assistant Professor at the University of Ottawa. Dr. Amankwah received her medical degree from the University of Ghana Medical School. She completed her residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Ottawa where she also undertook further training in Mature Women s Health. In addition, Dr. Amankwah obtained specialised training in the management of Vulvovaginal Diseases at The University of Michigan Center for Vulvar Diseases and the Mid-Charlotte Dermatology and Research Clinic in North Carolina. Dr. Amankwah s practise includes both Obstetrics and Gynecology. She is part of the Obstetrics call group at the General Campus of The Ottawa Hospital. She also provides specialised gynecologic patient care at the Ottawa Hospital s Shirley E. Greenberg Women s Health Centre in the Menopause and Vulvo-vaginal disease clinics. Dr. Amankwah is involved in research and has publications in the area of vulvo-vaginal diseases. Dr. Jennifer Blake, MD, MSC Chief Executive Officer, the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada Adjunct Professor, University of Ottawa Dr. Jennifer Blake is Chief Executive Officer of the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada (SOGC), which is a leading authority on women s sexual and reproductive health representing thousands of specialists across the country. She is an experienced physician and respected leader who has facilitated major organizational change in both hospital and academic sectors. During her 30-year medical career, Dr. Blake has held several clinical, academic and leadership roles, including Chief of obstetrics and gynaecology and Head of Women s Health at the Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, Chief of Pediatric Gynaecology at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto and Undergraduate Dean of McMaster University s Medical School. She has also served as Professor and Associate Chair at the University of Toronto, as well as Head of Pediatric Gynaecology for the school. She is Adjunct Professor at the University of Ottawa. Dr. Blake brings a national perspective to her work from her experience with the SOGC, the Medical Council of Canada, the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, the Association of Academic Professionals in Obstetrics and Gynaecology of Canada, and the Canadian Foundation for Women s Health. Dr. Blake has a bachelor of science from the University of Waterloo, and from McMaster University a medical degree and a master s in health research methodology. In 2011, Dr. Blake was identified as one of the top 25 women of influence in Canada. Dr. Justine Davies, MD Physician From Montreal originally, Dr. Davies graduated from Medicine at McGill University in 2007 and graduated from Family Medicine at the University of Ottawa in Dr. Davies completed a three month fellowship in enhanced skill: Benign Breast Disease at the Women s Breast Health Centre, Civic Campus in She is currently working as a consultant at the Women s Breast Health Center on Benign Non-Surgical Breast Disease as well as the High Risk Clinic for women/men at increased risk for breast cancer since Dr. Davies also runs her own practice in family medicine as part of a Family Health Group. Dr. Laura Didomizio, MD, FRCP(C) Fellow, Urogynecology and Reconstructive Pelvic Surgery, University of Ottawa Originally from Peterborough, Laura completed both her undergraduate degree as well as medical school at McMaster University. She moved to Saskatoon to pursue residency training in obstetrics and gynecology. She has just recently moved to Ottawa to start fellowship training in urogynecology and reconstructive pelvic surgery. Dr. Hélène Gagné, MD, FRCP(C) Obstetrics and Gynaecology, The Ottawa Hospital Dr. Gagné is an Ob/Gyn at the Civic Hospital and director of the vulvo-vaginal diseases program which includes clinics at CHEO and the Riverside Women s Health Centre. Dr. Roland Halil, PharmD Clinical Pharmacist, Bruyere Academic Family Health Team Assistant Professor, Department of Family Medicine (DFM) Dr. Roland Halil is a Clinical Pharmacist in the Bruyere Academic Family Health Team and Assistant Professor in the Department of Family Medicine (DFM). He has worked in this setting for over 8 years. Prior to this, Roland completed his Doctor of Pharmacy degree at the University of Toronto, his hospital residency at the Ottawa Hospital, and his Bachelor's of Science in Pharmacy at the Memorial University of Newfoundland. Raised in Ottawa, Roland has a diverse set of interests, including infectious disease, technology in health care, chronic disease management and global health. He is the co-director of the global health elective to Panama within the Department of Family Medicine. 6

7 Women s Health Update Speaker Biographies Dr. Jonathan Huber, MD, FRCP(C), MSC Obstetrician/Gynecologist, Queensway Carleton Hospital Dr. Huber is an Obstetrician/Gynecologist in private practice at the Queensway Carleton Hospital in Ottawa. He has a special clinical and research interest in female sexual function and dysfunction including desire, arousal, orgasm, and pain disorders. Dr. Huber graduated with dual undergraduate degrees in Biology and Psychology from the University of Ottawa in He then received his Master of Science in Human Sexuality at the University of Guelph in 2002 followed by his Medical Doctorate from Queen s University in He completed his post-graduate residency training in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Queen s University in Dr. Christiane Kuntz, MD Private Practice Dr. Christiane Kuntz, an Assistant Professor in the Department of Family Medicine in Ottawa since 1994 and has been in solo family practice since In January 2000, she undertook part-time clinical consulting work in mature women s health at The Ottawa Hospital Shirley E. Greenberg Women s Health Centre and established a mood disorders clinic there in She acts as the Director for the Gynecology, part of the Ottawa Family Medicine resident curriculum. She has been involved in the development and implementation of the skills transfer portion of the Ontario Benign Uterine Conditions project since 2005 which focuses on teaching primary care providers how to manage problems such as abnormal uterine bleeding and pelvic prolapse and how to perform office-based women s health procedures. Dr. Dante Pascali, MD, FRCS(C) Assistant Professor, Urogynecology Division Head, The Ottawa Hospital Dr. Pascali is currently an Assistant Professor and Urogynecology Division Head in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University of Ottawa. He received his medical degree from Queen's University in 1998 and his Fellowship in Obstetrics and Gynaecology in Since completing a clinical fellowship in Urogynaecology and Reconstructive Pelvic Surgery at the University of Toronto in 2005, he has been actively involved with undergraduate and postgraduate education. His clinical and research interests focus on the evaluation and treatment of female pelvic floor prolapse and incontinence. Dr. Jean Seely, MD Physician, Staff Radiologist, The Ottawa Hospital Dr. Jean Seely is Head of Breast Imaging at the Ottawa Hospital in the Department of Medical Imaging. She was born and raised in Montreal, graduating from McGill Medical School in She completed her rotating internship at St. Paul s Hospital in Vancouver in 1990 and residency in radiology at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver in Her fellowships were in pediatric radiology at the B.C. Children s Hospital, thoracic radiology with Dr. Nestor Muller in 1996, and thoracic radiology with Dr. Eric Effman at the Seattle Children s Hospital in Seattle, Washington in Jean worked in Seattle, Washington at Group Health Cooperative from , where she also trained in breast MRI with Bruce Porter. In 2001, she returned to Canada to work as a chest and breast radiologist at the Ottawa Hospital and Women s Breast Health Center. She began the Breast MRI Program at the Ottawa Hospital in Jean is Associate Professor with the University of Ottawa, regularly teaching residents and medical students in Ottawa, as well as at meetings nationally and internationally, in breast imaging and chest disease. Jean is interested in research and has published in the fields of chest and breast radiology, she has written chapters on pleural disease and chest intervention, and review articles on breast MRI. Dr. Seely has volunteered extensively with the Canadian Association of Radiologists (CAR) on working groups for both the Practice Guidelines for Magnetic Resonance Imaging, and the Practice Guidelines and Technical Standards for Breast Imaging and Intervention. 7

8 Women s Health Update Speaker Biographies Dr. Gihad Shabib, MD, FRCP(C), MRCOG Assistant Professor, Obstetrics and Gynecology, University of Ottawa Dr. Shabib was recognized as the busiest Ob/Gyn in Ontario in After experiencing the quality of care received by his patients, the reason for a full waiting room is clear. Dr. Shabib has an empathetic approach; he examines his patients thoroughly and ensures that treatment/care received is in accordance with the highest standards delineated by Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology in Canada (SOGC) and suited to his patients needs. Dr. Gihad Shabib has been practicing Medicine since graduating from Medical school in He trained & worked in the field of Obstetrics and Gynaecology for over 30 years. Dr. Shabib started his Ob/Gyn practice in Ottawa in He is currently affiliated to the University of Ottawa as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. He performs his Gynaecological surgeries at the General & the Riverside Campuses and deliveries at the General Hospital, as a member of the Women Health Care Group. Teaching: Dr. Shabib has been recognized by the American Collage of Obstetrics and Gynaecology in 2010, as the best clinical teacher at the Ottawa University. Dr. Shabib enjoys sharing his expertise with residence and take pride in the success of promising young doctors. In turn residents continuously inspire him to keep abreast with new research and technological advances. Dr. Shabib, has well rounded and extensive training in all aspects of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. His rich expertise includes: Obstetrics, Pregnancy (he is able to manage difficult and high-risk pregnancies including: twins and multiple pregnancy, diabetic pregnancy, hypertension, renal disease and thromboses issues), Delivery (Dr. Shabib strives to deliver all babies safely through the natural vaginal path. Dr. Shabib s Caesarian Section rate is among the lowest in North America. His residents look forward to his unique teaching in operative obstetric procedures such as, breech and forceps delivery), Gynaecology, Abdominal Masses (Dr. Shabib is able to manage all benign abdominal masses. He introduced a new approach for surgical treatment of fibroid, while preserving fertility, through myomectomy in 2009), Menstruation Abnormality (Dr. Shabib treats all menstrual problems such as heavy bleeding through medical and surgical care. Surgical management includes; vaginal, laparoscopic and abdominal hysterectomy. His peers recognize his expertise in vaginal hysterectomy, as he receives a high-rate of difficult surgical referrals. Dr. Shabib is among the pioneers in minimally invasive surgical techniques such as endometrial ablation, he began using this technique in 1989), Prolaps (Dr. Shabib is skilled in vaginal and uterine prolaps treatment, including pessary and surgery. He has a special expertise in posterior repair), Colposcopy (Dr. Shabib has been managing all problems with abnormal Pap smear since 1986), Hormonal Issues (Dr. Shabib has a high rate for success in treating fertility issues and gynaecological endocrinological problems, such as: excessive hair, weight gain, menopausal issues and lack of menstruation), Sexual Medicine, Painful Sex (Dr. Shabib is a leader in treating vestibulitis and vulvodynia syndrome, medically, surgically and through the use of Botox) and Sexual Dysfunction (the lack of desire and orgasm is treated through medical care such as hormonal therapy). Dr. Hassan Shenassa, MD, FRCSC Gynecological Surgeon Dr. Shenassa returned to Ottawa in 1996 after a two year Fellowship in Advanced Gynecological Surgery in Canada, the United States and France. His research interests are focused on patient safety, surgical education locally and within the international medical community. He is the director of international women s health at the Ottawa Hospital. He is currently the co-chair of the International Women s Health committee at the SOGC. He is the medical director of the Harmony Health Centre Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology Program. Hassan is involved with ongoing clinical and educational projects in Tanzania, Ethiopia and Trinidad & Tobago. Affiliations: Division of Urogynecology and Pelvic Surgery, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Faculty of Medicine, University of Ottawa. Funding source: TOHAMO educational research grant. Shelley Taylor President and Education Coordinator, Venus Envy Inc. Shelley Taylor founded Venus Envy in 1998 in Halifax, and then in Ottawa in Venus Envy is an educational sex shop and book store with a mandate to offer free and/or affordable sex education to customers, service providers, students and anyone else who asks! Shelley has been creating and facilitating workshops and discussions around sexual and reproductive health since 1998 and earned a certificate in Adult Education from Dalhousie University in As the Education Coordinator for Venus Envy, Shelley works with health professionals in a wide variety fields related to health education, promotion and harm reduction to create and improve our program of in-store and community workshops. Working with customers on a daily basis, one of the main topics that comes up pertains to a lack of sensation and lubrication, a reduction in elasticity and other sexual challenges related to menopause, surgery, hormone imbalances and so on. Shelley is happy to be here sharing her knowledge on and for the opportunity expand her knowledge through different perspectives. Dr. Shailendra Verma, MD Medical Oncologist, The Ottawa Hospital/Ministry of Health Dr. Shailendra Verma obtained his MD at Queen's University in Following post graduate training in Internal Medicine, Hematology and Oncology, Dr. Verma commenced an academic practice at The Ottawa Hospital Cancer Center / University of Ottawa, Faculty of Medicine in During the ensuing 26 years Dr. Verma has held many regional, provincial and national responsibilities and posts but above all has valued the delivery of timely, evidence-based and compassionate care of his patients, from whom he continues to gather inspiration and insight. 8
