Message from the TAAO Steering Committee (SC) Chair Alvin Hee Department of Biology Faculty of Science Universiti Putra Malaysia Serdang, Selangor Darul Ehsan, Malaysia Dear TAAOers, Greetings from Malaysia! It is of great honour and privilege to appointed as the new chair of TAAO as well a member of the International Fruit Fly Steering Committee. With this responsibility, there is much to be done especially in the push for the goals of TAAO to be achieved i.e. Broaden interaction and collaboration among tephritid workers from the region; enhance capacity to develop and deploy effective diagnostic and management programmes; provide a centralised forum for researchers, agencies, and regulators to access and obtain specific information or to contact regional tephritid workers; foster collegiality among tephritid workers in the region and educate the wider community about the biological importance of tephritids and their impact on regional horticulture. I also take pleasure in announcing that ever since initiatives started in reinvigorating TAAO leading to her first symposium this year, our first term TAAO SC members especially Mark Schutze has been a prime mover in keeping all of us together. Thanks, Mark for sharing your infectious enthusiasm for TAAO with me! Whilst Mark as the outgoing TAAO Chair has left a hard act to follow, I must also thank Profs Tony Clarke and Keng-Hong Tan for being instrumental in getting the initiatives started. I am also humbled by the support of TAAOers especially during our first symposium in August for next meeting that we are looking forward in 4 years time. These are obvious indicators that certainly TAAO has a bright future ahead. Notwithstanding that some of us have or will be retiring from our careers, together we are bound by our love for work that we do and loving what we do for our work on the flies in this region! I certainly look forward to working with the new TAAO SC as well as everyone in this big TAAO family! With best wishes and regards, Alvin Hee TAAO Newsletter Issue 4 (October 2016) 2

Message from the Immediate Past Chair of TAAO SC and EC Mark Schutze School of Earth, Environmental & Biological Sciences Queensland University of Technology GPO Box 2434 Brisbane, QLD 4001, Australia Dear TAAOers, It gives me great pleasure to write a few words for our latest Newsletter, especially to congratulate all those involved in the reinvigoration of TAAO since 2014, culminating in our Inaugural Symposium held in Malaysia earlier this year. Special acknowledgement must go to the TAAO Steering and Editorial Committees, and especially Organising Chair (and his team!) of the Symposium, Alvin Hee, for a magnificent event at which 90 delegates attended from more than 20 countries. Alvin s tireless work in bringing this Symposium together gives me great confidence as he leads TAAO into the future as new Chair of the Steering Committee. Thanks also to those that have supported TAAO and the Symposium, especially the IAEA (thanks Rui!), and to those departing the S.C. with whom it s been a pleasure to work with, these being Phil Taylor, Kenji Tsuruta, Bonifacio Cayabyab and Suksom Chinvinijkul; while welcoming new SC members Nguyen Thi Thanh Hien from Vietnam, M. Hasanuzzaman from Bangladesh, and Sunyanee Srikachar of Thailand. I have also stepped back as Chair of the Editorial Committee, which is now in the very capable hands of M. Hasanuzzaman (new Chair of the E.C.) and his vibrant group of E.C. members, Farzana Yesmin, Deane Woruba, Chandra Prabhakar, Yongcheng Dong, and Hamish Patrick. I look forward to seeing them foster greater engagement among regional tephritid workers in the years ahead. I m sure those who joined us in Putrajaya for the TAAO Symposium will agree that the future for TAAO is bright and that we have many exciting years ahead. I encourage all to consider getting involved with TAAO now and into the future, as we look towards the next Symposium in 2020; the venue of which is to be decided from among a number of nominated countries (stay tuned!). Finally, a sincere thanks to all for the last couple of years; it has been my esteemed pleasure to be a part of this wonderful community. All the best. Mark Schutze (outgoing Chair) - Oct 2016 TAAO Newsletter Issue 4 (October 2016) 3

A Successful Event First TAAO Symposium, Malaysia, August 15-18, 2016 Alvin Hee Department of Biology Faculty of Science Universiti Putra Malaysia Serdang, Selangor Darul Ehsan, Malaysia Time has passed very fast! It has been more than two months since we bade farewell after the end of our first TAAO meeting in the Palm Garden Hotel. The garden is divided into 57 sections, and is managed by the government through the Department of Forestry, Ministry of Environment and Forests. At Section 48 there is a bamboo garden containing 20 bamboo species from different parts of the oriental region (Bangladesh, China, Thailand) viz., Bambusa arundinacea (Kata Bash), Bambusa ventricisa (Ghoti Bash), Bambusa chinensis (China Bash), Dendrocalamus giganteus (Vudum Bash), Melocanna abaccifera (Muli Bash), etc. (according to NBG leaflet, 2014). Two groups of Tephritidae are known to be associated with bamboo (Poaceae) in the Oriental region: Gastrozonini (Dacinae) and Acanthonevrini (Phytalmiinae). Figure 1. 8 During the survey six different bamboo-shoot fly species viz., Felderimyia gombakensis Hancock and Drew, Rioxoptilona dunlopi (van der Wulp) and Rioxoptilona vaga (Wiedemann) under Acanthonevrini (Tephritidae: Phythalmiinae), Acroceratitis distincta (Zia), Acroceratitis ceratitina (Bezzi), and Gastrozona soror (Schiner) under Gastrozonini (Tephritidae: Dacinae) were detected and collected from the bamboo garden on 5 th, 11 th and 17 th August, Four of these species, F. gombakensis, R. vaga, A. distincta, and G. soror are new records for Bangladesh. On each collection day young bamboo shoots were broken to attract and capture flies. Some species were collected from bamboo clumps/stand by hand picking during 10 am to 2 pm. Most of the flies were collected by carefully placing glass test tubes and using polythene bags over the flies. The bamboo-shoot flies were then taken to the Insect Biotechnology Division, Institute of Food and Radiation Biology, Atomic Energy Research Establishment laboratory. Each fly was then photographed under a dissecting microscope, and different taxonomic features matched with those from published bamboo- shoot fly records, especially with those from Bangladesh. To confirm the identification, photographs and pinned or alcohol specimens preserved separately in 100% ethanol in Eppendorf tubes were sent to Damir Kovac (Senckenberg Research Institute and Natural History Museum, Frankfurt am Main, Germany). Photographs of bamboo-shoot flies, viz, R. dunlopi, R. vaga, A. ceratitina and G. Soror were also sent to David Hancock, Cairns, Queensland, Australia for confirmation of fly identity. Further molecular and biological studies on collected species are in progress. TAAO Newsletter Issue 4 (October 2016) 8

KNOW YOUR COLLEAGUE: Professor Emeritus Dr. Hoi-Sen Yong Hoi-Sen Yong Professor Emeritus in Genetics and Zoology Institute of Biological Sciences University of Malaya, Malaysia Hoi-Sen Yong is Professor Emeritus in Genetics and Zoology at the Institute of Biological Sciences, University of Malaya. He is a Foundation Fellow and Senior Fellow of the Academy of Sciences Malaysia. He has published over 300 scientific papers and authored several books, as well as edited several journals, academic books and proceedings. His PhD thesis (1968) was on genetics and systematics of murid rodents. He was among the pioneers worldwide to adopt a holistic and innovative approach to solving problems in biosystematics, employing both classical and modern methods. He discovered for the first time in the world the phenomenon of X-monosomy (presence of a single X -chromosome instead of the normal two in female individuals) in the house rat Rattus rattus (published in NATURE, 1971) and in wild Norway rat Rattus norvegicus (1989). Unlike XO humans (with a single X-chromosome, known as Turner s syndrome) and larger mammals that are infertile, XO female rats are fertile (due to short gestation and short maturation period). Yong started to study tephritid fruit flies in the late 1970s. His group studied the diversity, host plants, male attractants from local plants, life history, parasitoids, genetics and systematics. He discovered new records of fruit fly species, new host fruits as well as new species for Malaysia. Pardalaspinus yongi (Hancock & Drew, 1995) was named in honor of him. Among his publications on tephritid fruit flies are: (1) Garcinia cowa (Guttiferae): host plant for fruit fly Photo: Hoi-Sen Yong Bactrocera propinqua (Tephritidae), 1992 in which he clarified that the correct name for the host plant Garcinia laueana as hitherto reported in the literature should be Garcinia bancana as there is no Garcinia species by the name of 'laueana' (the written script for bancana was incorrectly transcribed as laueana); (2) Host fruit preferences in two sympatric taxa of the Bactrocera dorsalis complex (Insecta: Diptera: Tephritidae), 1994; (3) Genetic differentiation and relationships in five taxa of the Bactrocera dorsalis complex (Insecta: Diptera: Tephritidae), 1995 in which Bactrocera dorsalis and Bactrocera papayae were shown to be genetically very similar and they produced fertile F1 hybrids under laboratory condition; (4) Multigene phylogeography of Bactrocera caudata (Insecta: Tephritidae): distinct genetic lineages in northern and southerm hemispheres, 2015; (5) Differentiating sibling species of Zeugodacus caudatus (Insecta: Tephritidae) by complete mitochondrial genome, 2016; and (6) Complete mitochondrial genome of three Bactrocera fruit flies of subgenus Bactrocera (Diptera: Tephritidae) and their phylogenetic implications, TAAO Newsletter Issue 4 (October 2016) 12

Yong has recently extended his study to microbiomes of fruit flies to determine diversity as well as vertical and horizontal transmission. He continues to study the genomics and other aspects of fruit fly biology. Yong had received several prestigious awards such as the Malaysia Toray Science Foundation First Science and Technology Award (1994), National Science Award (1995), MPKSN Prize for Advancement/ Promotion of Public Understanding in Science and Technology (1996), Professor Emeritus in Genetics and Zoology, University of Malaya (2007), and the Merdeka Award (2010) for Outstanding Scholastic Achievement.
