1 SUMMARY REPORT IAEA/RCA REGIONAL TRAINING WORKSHOP ON NUCLEAR & RELATED METHODOLOGIES FOR QUANTIFICATION OF TANNINS IN SHRUB & TREE LEAVES, AGROINDUSTRIAL BY- PRODUCTS AND OTHER NEW FEED RESOURCES FAISALABAD, PAKISTAN 1-12 DECEMBER 2003 Animal Production and Health Section Joint FAO/IAEA Division of Nuclear Techniques in Food and Agriculture International Atomic Energy Agency This Regional Training Workshop was held in Pakistan from 1-12 December The objective of the workshop was to provide training on recent methods for quantification of tannins in feed resources. The workshop was organised by Nuclear Institute for Agriculture and Biology (NIAB) in Faisalabad and was supported by three IAEA experts (Mr. Victor Mlambo, Mr. Herrmann Baumgartner and the TO).

2 Thirteen participants (9 foreign and 4 local) from 9 countries participated in the workshop. All participants selected for the workshop are collaborators in the laboratory activities connected with RAS/5/035. The training was a blend of theory and practical. The emphasis in the theory classes was on conceptual background, principles of the methodologies, interpretation of the data, and use of the information generated for identifying promising feed resources and developing appropriate feed supplementation strategies. In practical classes, initially, methodologies were demonstrated, followed by performance of these methodologies, at least twice, by the participants. The training workshop covered a total of 6 non-nuclear and 2 nuclear based methodologies for determination of content and biological activity of different types of tannins (see Programme of the Training Workshop). Feedback on the training programme was taken from participants through discussions and a questionnaire. All participants indicated that they acquired all the practical skills for conducting the methodologies and they were confident of introducing these techniques in their laboratories; 11 participants mentioned that they acquired all the knowledge and 2 indicated that they acquired approximately 75 percent. Twelve participants rated the experts as Very Good and Excellent and the rest (1) as Medium. All participants rated the technical content, relevance and quality of lectures and practical training as Very Good and Excellent. Most participants indicated that the training workshop was exhaustive and exhausting. This training workshop would enable the nutritional evaluation of unconventional feed resources and their use as livestock feed.
