Every Starred Slide Identifies Critical Information that needs to be covered, other slides support critical information. Males Grade 5 RULES: We will act in an appropriate and respectful manner, no name calling, and use appropriate language at all times. Personal stories will not be shared, please place all questions in question box if you need further information. Remember what is shared may need to be discussed with parents. Be kind to ourselves and our bodies and build self-esteem/respect.
DAY 1 Slides 4-16 (50 minutes) Background Knowledge Vocabulary access compare valid product(s) service(s) avoid reduce behavior personal risk
What are our Learning Goals for this Unit? They come from our Standards/Benchmarks All standards in HE 5.P, HE.5.C, HE.5.B can be addressed. Language Arts, Math, and Science Standards may also be reflected in unit. By end of unit student should be able to: Describe characteristics of valid health information, products and services. Examine when you would need help in making a health related decision. Who can you ask, and why you should ask? Determine how behavior affects your personal health. Identify examples from this unit. Identify human body parts and body systems specific to your growth and development. Determine how to avoid or reduce health risks and be responsible for health behaviors. Identify examples from this unit.
Questions Discuss and record positive examples of the things you do or can do to build these life skills. Be specific.
Puberty is the time when a young person s body begins maturing and changing to become like an adult. At puberty, many changes begin such as increased hair growth, growth spurts, skin changes, and voice changes. Puberty begins usually between for boys. The changes may take place over several years. When these changes are complete, the person is physically mature.
Environment and Growth Growth does not depend only on hormones. How people grow depends also on their lifestyle, or how they live. People need good food, rest and exercise to be healthy. During puberty, your need for nutrition-rich food and rest increases. Because your body is changing so rapidly, it uses more energy than it ever has before. In order to be as strong and healthy as you can, you must eat healthful foods and get plenty of sleep. Choosing a healthful lifestyle is part of becoming a responsible person. Predict how lifestyle and health behaviors might affect puberty.
Growth Spurts Extra amounts of growth hormone from the pituitary gland cause rapid growth during puberty. The thyroid gland also makes a hormone that affects growth. During adolescence, growth speeds up a little at first. Then comes a sudden, very rapid growth spurt. Hormones cause growth to take place in an orderly way.
Voice Changes The male hormones also cause the boy s voice to change. A child s voice is high. During adolescence, a boy s voice begins to deepen. The larynx, or the voice box, gets larger. The Adam s apple, which is the front part of the larynx, bulges out more. The vocal cords grow longer and thicker. An adolescent boy s voice may crack or squeak in the middle of a sentence. In time, he starts speaking in a deeper tone without his voice cracking.
Male Endocrine Health Vocabulary Gland: An organ that releases chemicals into the body is a gland. Pituitary Gland: This is a very important gland and is called the master gland since it controls so many body functions. Hormones: Hormones are chemicals that change certain body processes. Testosterone: Hormones that produce secondary sex characteristics. Human Growth Hormone (HGH): A hormone made by the pituitary gland and is necessary for normal growth. Testes: Male sex organs. They are responsible for the development of the primary and secondary sex characteristics and are where sperm is created. Ovaries: Female organs responsible for Primary and secondary sex characteristics, where eggs are created. Secondary Sex Characteristics: Body changes that occur during puberty.
ENDOCRINE SYSTEM/GLANDS Checking for Understanding Which gland does? Use QR code to gather more information.
Increase in height Voice becomes deeper Appearance of facial hair Growth of hair under the arms, on the legs and on the chest Growth of hair around the pubic area Increase in perspiration Broadening of the shoulders Increase in muscle mass Increase in size of the reproductive organs Production of sperm

Male Reproductive Anatomy Vocabulary PENIS: the male sex organ used to pass urine and the passageway for the release of semen. SCROTUM: the sac-like pouch that holds the testes. TESTES: the two glands that produce testosterone and sperm. Male reproductive cells are called sperm cells. SEMINAL VESICLES: the two small glands that add to a fluid to semen to help sperm move. VAS DEFERENS: one of two long tubes through which sperm passes from the testes to the urethra. PROSTATE GLAND: a gland that makes fluid that helps sperm stay alive. COWPER S GLAND: a gland that makes the final protective fluid for easier mobility. URETHRA: a narrow tube through which urine and semen pass out of the body. Word Sort Which words belong to female only, which one belongs to males and both. Match Definitions, Record answers.
Recall Male Reproductive Anatomy Activity Assign groups colored boxes collaborate and record on white board
DAY 2 Human Growth and Development Review of Process and Deepening Knowledge Slides (50 minutes) Teachers: With ENOUGH TIME you can combine Days 1 and 2 and Days 3 and 4 in the 5 th grade curriculum. Day 5 (could Be Day 3) HIV/AIDS portion can be connected to a Science Unit Choose your extension activities and plan ENOUGH TIME for students to process, elaborate, record and reflect. Extension, reflection and deepening understanding cannot be managed in 1-50 minute period by any student. Extension Activities: Teachers could rotate 4 stations(slides 21-24) have all students do all 4 rotations or, modify and do 2 extension activities where Group A does 1 and moves to 2 and Group B does 3 and moves to 4, etc.
8 minute 15 second Video Overview of Reproductive Systems You Must Have Discovery Education Opened on your Computer (Must be logged in) through Angel In Order For this Link to Open Directly.
Erection and Ejaculation Erection: occurs when the penis fills up with blood and becomes hard. It is normal for boys to begin to have erections during puberty. Ejaculation: the passage of semen from the penis. Semen: a mixture of sperm and 3 fluids designed to protect and support sperm mobility. Wet Dreams: During puberty a boy may ejaculate semen while sleeping. Wet dreams are a normal part of puberty.
Fertilization Occurs when one sperm Joins with one egg to make a single cell First process of Reproduction.
APPLY CONCEPT Compare another example of how 2 things joined together can make something else. (science experiment?) Examples: Red dye and blue dye combined makes purple dye, an egg in boiling water makes it go from liquid to solid, or chocolate in heat can go from solid to liquid, or plant pollination model.
Synthesize Draw and label the 4 glandular fluids in order of that formulate Semen. Refer to the diagram of the male reproductive organs to track creation of semen from the testes. Final lubricating fluid added for urethra transport Gland Fluid that protects and aids in mobility Gland Fluid that protects First fluid that contains all DNA for male
Let s Build Higher Order Thinking Skills!!!! In your group develop a level 3 and level 4 higher order thinking question that you and your teacher can answer using power point information, background knowledge, or collaborative research. Example: Differentiate between valid products and services and those that are not. (level 3) Your teacher will have a question box for you if you feel you want to privately ask a question. Please remember to use accurate and appropriate terminology.
Using a BYOD device COMPARE AND CONTRAST Bacteria and VIRUS Use a graphic organizer and divide group to investigate. Draw conclusions from that investigation Predict the differences and similarities Are they treated or cured. What causes them (could research steroids as alternate topic)
Florida Standards/ Cross-Curricular Activities Assessment Readiness Perform at least one of the following standards-based or cross-curriculum extension activities: Science Experiments- (science lessons/experimentspollination, gas to liquid, liquid to solid, etc.) Mathematics Calculate BMI - also technology is using graphs, word problems with this vocabulary, online calculation formulas, etc.. Media - Magazine Advertisements for hygiene products propaganda versus valid information. ELL - Close Reading-Triad language arts (changes in body article/section from book, science pieces changes from liquid to gas to solid, science/math cycles stages of a butterfly) etc. PE/Science/Math Body Composition-BMI calculate a sample BMI, using graphs, reports to answer questions, etc.
PERSONAL HEALTH & HYGIENE Day 3 Day 3 Slides (30 minutes) Teachers: Days 3 and 4 can be combined in the 5 th grade curriculum (at least 60 minutes) but HIV/AIDS section is not included in that timeframe and would require an additional 30 minutes. Extension, reflection and deepening understanding cannot be managed in 1-50 minute period by any student.
An athletic supporter is an undergarment that supports the testes and penis. Sometimes it is also called a jockstrap. The protective cup is a plastic cup that is worn to further protect the testes and penis. The cup is placed inside an athletic supporter for protection while participating in sports. Purchase size according to waist.
Athletic supporters are also called jockstraps. An athletic supporter is an undergarment that supports the testes and penis. Athletic supporters or jockstraps are sold in sporting goods stores. Drugstores sell athletic supporters in the first aid section. The athletic supporter and cup will usually fit a boy correctly if he buys the correct waist size.
Perspiration by itself has no odor. Perspiration that reacts with bacteria on the skin creates odor.
The sweat glands, especially those in the armpits and in the pubic area, become more active during adolescence. Hot weather, exercise or excitement often cause more perspiration. You can control odor by taking a daily bath or shower and by using underarm deodorant.
Keep your feet clean and dry. Wear socks that absorb moisture, such as cotton socks and wash them after use. Use powders or sprays designed for feet and shoes. When possible do not wear the same shoes two days in a row. Give shoes a chance to air out. Wash sneakers and other shoes if they can be washed and make sure they are dried properly.
Remember: Bathe or shower everyday. Washing with soap and water removes perspiration and dirt. And: Ask your parents or guardians about deodorant (gets rid of unpleasant odors) and antiperspirants (stop perspiration).
Oil glands in the skin, develop quite rapidly during puberty as well as certain sweat glands. The oil glands begin producing much more oil than they did before puberty. The tubes leading from the glands may get clogged with dirt, bacteria and oil, causing infection or pimples. (ACNE) You should wash your face with a gentle face cleanser after sleeping or excessively sweating if you do not have ability to shower. Oil and Sweat Don t Mix
ACNE. Acne is a skin disorder in which pores are clogged with oil and germs. Acne is common in both boys and girls, but usually worse in boys. A doctor cannot cure acne but can provide special treatments to keep it under control, sometimes antibiotic treatment is necessary. When the oil glands in your skin make too much sebum (oily substance), the oil ducts get clogged with oil and mix with germs on the skin.
Boys usually begin to get facial hair between the ages of 14 and 16. The first facial hairs appear near the outer corners of the upper lip. The hairs begin to fill in and grow toward the middle of the upper lip. Facial hair might change color. It may not be the same color as the hair on the head. A boy can discuss whether or not to shave facial hair with family. You should get permission from your parents or guardians to shave.
Types of Razors and Razor Information ALWAYS GET PERMISSION TO USE RAZOR.
How to Shave with an Electric Razor An electric razor is a razor that is plugged into a power outlet. *MAKE SURE YOU DO NOT HAVE RUNNING OR STANDING WATER ANYWHERE NEAR YOU Keep your face dry or apply a shaving solution made for the use with electric razors for the face. Gently glide the razor head downward in the same direction that the whiskers grow. Keep your electric razor clean. Replace the blades according to the directions.. Get parent s permission.
How to shave with a Blade Razor A blade razor is a mechanical razor with a blade. A blade razor is operated by hand. Get Parent Permission then: Wet your whiskers with warm water. Put shaving cream, gel, or foam on your face. Use a razor with a sharp blade, replace when blades dull. Shave downward in the same direction that the hair grows. Shave the hair on the chin and upper lip last. Rinse your razor often and let it air-dry. Apply moisturizer with sunscreen if going outside after a shave.

What is it? Razor burn is red, itchy skin that stings. You get razor burn from: *shaving with a dull blade. *pressing too hard. *shaving dry skin that has not been softened. Let the area heal before shaving again. See a doctor if it does not heal in a few days. Razor burn can turn into a bad infection if it is not treated properly.
What happens if I cut myself while shaving? Press a styptic pencil against a nick or cut. It is coated with chemicals that will make the bleeding stop. If you don t have a styptic pencil, use a tissue or towel. Wait 3-5 minutes and the bleeding will stop. Allow the nick or cut to heal before shaving over it again.
Write a Safe, Step by Step Plan for Shaving with a Manual Blade Razor 1. Ask for permission to use a razor
DAY 4 REVIEW and CHECK FOR UNDERSTANDING Slides 45-48(30 minutes) Teachers: You may instead combine Days 1-3 and then Days 4-5 in the 5 th grade curriculum. Could be great use of half an early release day. (Slides at least 60 minutes) Do HIV/AIDS portion on another day. *Extension, reflection and deepening understanding cannot be managed in a single period by any student.
Have regular checkups. Accept your body and the changes as they occur. Be confident and proud. Be kind to self and others during these physical and mental changes. DON T BE A BULLY!!! Use positive comments or don t comment at all. Don t participate in gossip and drama. Do not share a razor, even if you have permission to shave. Bathe/shower each day. Wear clean underwear, socks and athletic supporters to prevent bacteria growth and jock itch. Wear athletic supporters/protectors during sports. Avoid picking or squeezing acne. DO NOT USE STEROIDS OR ANY SUPPLEMENTS WITHOUT DISCUSSING WITH DOCTOR. Choose responsible actions when you have mood swings. Avoid/reduce your risk behaviors. Determine consequences to actions and make good choices.
Questions guys your age might have Many girls in my class are taller than the boys. I am the shortest one of all. Will I always be short? Your genes from your biological parents predict your height. Boys can have growth spurts up to age 21 dependent on hormones, growth plates and environmental factors. I want to have big muscles. Is it okay to take steroids? It is never okay to take steroids unless prescribed by your physician for specific treatment and must be followed and monitored very closely. Anabolic Steroids are illegal synthetic drugs that have many harmful side effects. Steroids often cause shrinking of testicles, breast growth, hair loss, violent mood swings and a higher risk of testicular cancer. Sometimes I have muscle pains that come and go. Mom says I have growing pains. Are growing pains normal? It is normal to have muscle pains or tenderness located at growth plate areas, they should not last and will likely not reoccur. Get plenty of rest, drink a lot of water and eat healthy to support all your normal growth spurts. Smoking and drug use can inhibit normal growth spurts and muscle and organ development. My voice goes up or squeaks sometimes when I talk. Is this normal? It is normal for voices to change when hormones begin to release and the larynx and trachea develop. Smoking and drug use can alter normal voice development as well.
Revise your examples. How can you build these life skills? Use specific examples from class.
Demonstrate Understanding of Learning Goals Answer the following Standards/Benchmark Questions: Provide 1-2 good examples using complete sentences that demonstrate understanding at a level 3 or higher. Make Observations on how you can access valid health information, products and services. (4 points) Distinguish when you would need help in making a health related decision. Who can you ask? Why should you ask? (4 points) Hypothesize how your behavior affects your personal health. Use example from this unit. (4 points) Predict how you can/will be responsible for your personal health behaviors, specifically to your growth and development. (4 points) Summarize 4 things you can do to avoid or reduce your health risks. (4 points)
DAY 5 HIV /AIDS (30 minutes minimum)
HIV/AIDS VIDEO (HIV and AIDS: STAYING SAFE - 15 minute video) Remember to have logged in to Discovery Education(through ANGEL is fine) open on computer for link to work.
