1 Snack Bar: KS3/4 lesson activity sheets Fit for human consumption? SAC group Snack bar Dear all, The meeting will be in the Hoskins Conference Room at 12:00 on November 7th Please sign in at reception and ask for the SAC meeting. Please view the video (attached) and the nutritional information before attending the meeting. Fill in the S3 form as usual to prepare for the meeting. You can recommend the BIEC: bans the food if you think it is too unhealthy licenses the food if you think it is safe to eat endorses the food if you think it will make people healthier. 2 Fit for human consumption...continued Collect the evidence Your teacher will show you the video clips. Working individually, make notes of any relevant information in the clips. You might find the S3 form helpful. Complete one form for each clip. Your SAC group: Your teacher will then put you into your Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC) group. In your group, compare everyone s notes to make sure that you have all gathered all the information in the clips. Add any information you have missed to your S3 sheet. Have other people noticed things you missed? Can you point out things that they missed? By the end you should all have the same information. Use a new piece of paper for each key fact. As a group, make three columns on a large sheet of paper. Label them Ban, License and Endorse. The first member of the group should now place their first piece of paper in the relevant column. If you think the fact supports the idea that the food should be banned place it in the Ban column. If you are very confident that the food should be banned place it at the top of column, if you are not so sure you can place it nearer the bottom. Other members of the group can challenge you to explain why you have placed the note where you have. 2

3 Making a group decision...continued 3 4 The next person in your group adds their piece of paper and the group keeps going until all the facts have been placed on the grid. Eventually you should have a display that shows everyone s thinking about all of the available evidence. Using your evidence display and your discussions agree, as a group, which option makes the most sense, and whether you should ban, license or endorse the Snack Bar. Be prepared to question each others opinions - and maybe to change your own! Ban License Endorse How strongly you hold your opinion Your opinion about the Snack Bar Presenting to the BIEC: Prepare a five minute statement explaining your group decision. As an expert SAC group you will need to use scientific knowledge to justify your position. Your statement must include: a 100 word recommendation for the BIEC explaining the reasons for your decision a short presentation suitable for an BIEC Senior management Team meeting. Be prepared to answer questions about your decision at the meeting. 3

4 S3 form The SAC should use the form below to check on the reliability, rigour and relevance of evidence presented to them. Source Who was giving the information? (Where did the information come from? Does it seem a trustworthy source? Does it seem biased?) Style Did you believe the information? (Does the information inspire confidence? Can you trust it? Is it trying to sneak difficult ideas past you by making jokes about them?) Substance What information was given? (What was actually said? What claims were made? The facts? The opinions?) 4

6 Extension work: Data analysis Use the data in the Data Sheet: Food values, and your scientific understanding to answer these questions. 1 a. Which food type has the highest level of sugar per 100g? b. What does the symbol mg stand for? c. Which food has the highest level of vitamin C? d. How many grammes of protein is recommended per day for an adult male? e. What is the recommended daily energy intake for a female office worker? 2 a. A yoghurt bar weights 60g. How much sugar does it contain? b. A King size chocolate bar weighs 125 g. How much energy would that give you? c. How many King Size chocolate bars would a male athlete need to eat per day to give him his complete energy requirements? 3 Draw a suitable chart or graph to show the food value for a nut bar. The chart will be used on the packaging for the bar and should show people clearly how the bar contributes to their daily food requirements. 6
