6 OBJECTIVES (I) I. Quantify the effects of prenatal maternal diet on early programming, and subsequently on later cognitive development, mental and behavioural disorders (WPs 1-3). II. Understand the role and mechanisms of how specific nutrients affect mental performance, by virtue of genetic polymorphisms, in i genes encoding fatty acid and 5-methyl methyl-tetrahydrofolate tetrahydrofolate metabolism (WP1-6, 8). III. III.Understand how nutrition/diet of the mother, infant and child influence the child's neurodevelopment, mental performance and behavioural disorders (WPs 1-6). IV. IV.Explore the quantitative requirements and role of some nutrients in improving mental performance in children and their subsequent outcomes (WPs 5, 6).

7 OBJECTIVES (II) VI. Develop an appropriate standard neuropshycological battery to improve a comparable methodology for cognitive assessment of children in the EU (WPs 1-4, 6, 7). VII. VII.Explore how increasing knowledge about the links between diet and mental development, influences consumer behaviour and impacts upon public health (WPs 10, 11). VIII. VIII.Quantify, on a European scale, the economic impact of improving mental function through specific nutrients (WPs 10, 11). IX. Provide access to research results, deliver training and learning opportunities across all EU Member States, including Accession Countries (WP 13).

18 EXPECTED RESULTS Increased knowledge, including quantification, of the effects of nutrition on mental performance and mental illness, including assessments of risks and benefits of nutrition at various age groups. Sound scientific data to substantiate health and nutrition claims and to develop harmonised dietary recommendations for specific population groups (pregnant women, lactating mothers, infants & children). Cooperation and dialogue between different scientific disciplines, particularly between neuroscience, paediatrics, nutrition, food science and child psychology/psychiatry.

19 EXPECTED RESULTS The best available data and leverage from unique trials and (running) prospective studies in children at a suitable age to perform reliable cognitive/behavioural testing. Increasing the excellence and innovation potentials of the European nutrition research communities by means of stronger links to cognitive and neurosciences. Maximal impetus to maintain Europe s lead in this critical area of research by leading researchers in the field. Information on the social and economic costs related to diet and mental performances in Europe. Thorough training and dissemination of a new generation of internationally respected multi-disciplinary scientists in this research area.
