Preface The initiative for making this booklet originates from insights derived from hygiene analyses on pig breeding farms. Especially creating good hygienic conditions in the farrowing house turns out to be the key for success on pig breeding farms. This booklet is made with the greatest care. The pictures are made at different farms during the hygiene analyses. We have done everything to camouflage the recognizability of the farms, however, to make the booklet complete we did use the pictures. 3

What is clean enough for you? Do you want the farrowing house to be as clean as the pavement in front of your house, or even as clean as the bedroom for a newborn baby? A farrowing house has to be super clean, so that the newborn piglets don t get infected. Infections originate among others by pathogens that are present in the farrowing house. By cleaning and disinfecting after every production cycle we can strongly decrease the risk of an infection. Why use a wetting agent? Piglets drink milk which contains fat and protein. The manure of the piglets is fatty which makes the floors and walls greasy and make the germs stick or cover themselves in fat. The only way to get rid of the fat is with soap. A dirty stable contains a lot of germs per litre air. With a good wetting agent the percentage of germs will decrease with 90%, so from more than to less than Cleaning and disinfecting Dirty stable after one production cycle After good wetting and cleaning After good wetting/ cleaning and disinfecting > germs per litre air < germs per litre air < germs per litre air Cleaning procedure: In case of very dusty or strongly absorbent materials, first rinse with water and then immediately apply the wetting agent MS Topfoam LC ALK, 2% (= 2 litre per 100 litre water) and spread over the surface with a foam lance Leave it on the surface for a minimum of 15 minutes and a maximum of 2 hours. MS Topfoam LC ALK 5

Cleaning Clean with high pressure, bar max. Cover all surfaces well and pay special attention to the slats and bars of the pens. Work from top to bottom and from front to back. Once you are done, rinse once more with water at a low pressure. Why Disinfect? To be sure that all the germs are gone, we decrease during disinfecting the number of germs per litre air with more than 90%, so to less than and after a good disinfecting even less than Disinfecting procedure We strongly advice to wait with disinfecting until at least half an hour after cleaning, so the surfaces and air can dry properly. MS Megades % (= litre per 100 litre water) or; MS Oxydes 1.5% (=1.5 litre per 10 litre water) Carefully cover all surfaces at low pressure with the disinfectant solution/foam Use the MS Powermister to spread the disinfectant. MS Megades MS Oxy-Des MS Powermister 7

Why Fly control? Flies are responsible for the majority of the spreading of pathogens in your animal house. Think of Streptococcus and Staphylococcus. A fly makes small wounds were pathogens can nest. Fly control in the farrowing house starts, just like in other locations, in the slurry pit. 85% Of the population of flies lives here. By adding maggot death in the slurry pit after cleaning, you interrupt the production cycle of the fly. The remaining 15% (flying insects) of the population can be treated with Aza Fly, which is brushed on many small areas inside the animal house. A logical procedure! Fly control procedure Dissolve 250 grams of MS Maggot Death Plus in 10 litre water. This can be applied on 10 m 2 slatted floor. Dissolve 500 grams of Aza Fly in 500 ml warm water, and apply it with a brush on many small areas (total of 400 m 2 ) MS Pit Treatment MS Maggot Death Plus Aza-Fly 9

Employees There is nothing more important than your own health. Working in a hygienic way is not only important for yourself, but also for your animals. To take care good of your animals, it is necessary that you enter all different sections of the animal house. Pathogens are invisible to us and, without realising it, we can carry them throughout the entire animal house. So working in a hygienic way is a very important preventive measure. After all, it is proven that improvement of hygienic conditions results in less diseases, lower animal mortality and a better operational result. Therefore it s worth working in a disciplined and systematic way! Hands Did you ever keep track of everything you did with your hands in the past 10 minutes? Reason enough for a good hand hygiene when you are handling animals. Wash your hands regularly. Use liquid soap on the dry skin! Disinfect your hands with MS Hand Rapiddes after you touched the animals and / or use disposable gloves MS Piglet Grasper Strong 11
Company-hygiene: Prevent cross-contamination in your company Are your path- and material-ways (broom and shovel) also like this? OR LIKE THIS...? Gestation room Gestation room 12
Footgear Not only do we take everything in our hands, we also walk through everything. Prevent that your footgear is carrier and distributor of the problems! Use footgear with as less profile as possible, so it is easy to clean After use clean and dry the footgear Tools Brooms, squeezes, sorting panels and waste buckets, are not meant to spread infections. Clean regularly all materials and hang them to dry in a fixed place. Use materials of good quality and easy to clean material. Select one colour for the tools in the farrowing house, and other colour for other sections Use waste bags (MS Biobag) Boot Cleaner Don t forget the basic principles: Rest, Hygiene and Standardization Pressure yourself and your employees to work according to these basic principles. Then you are conscious of your own working methods and that is the most important basis for good hygiene MS Biobag 13

Measure on a regular basis the temperature of the piglet nest and the temperature of the environment! With an infrared remote thermometer you can measure the temperature of the piglet nest directly from the outside of the farrowing pen. Optimal Periode Temperature (ºC) Farrowing pen before birth Farrowing pen during birth Farrowing pen week 1 until weaning Piglets nest day 1 and Piglets nest day 3 until 2 weeks Piglets nest after 2 weeks until weening Infra-Red Thermometer Often piglets are put back with piglets from a younger weekgroup. In the end there is no way of knowing how old the piglets exactly are. As a check up you can give the piglets a specific colour ear tags per weekgroup. 17
Electric Tail Docker Standard Treatment Trolley A well equipped treatment trolley provides space, hygiene and all tools are within arm s reach. Protect the treatment trolley from becoming a contamination trolley! Do all treatments for one litter at one time. Clean and disinfect the treatment trolley and crates after use Disinfect the crates per litter or use disposable cardboard Use disposable cardboard in the crates Use the MS Pulse needle-free injection equipment on your treatment trolley. No risk of cross-contamination as occurs with needle injections More accurate than traditional injecting Improved effectiveness of injected substance Very efficient thanks to needleless injection MS Piglet Multi-Treatment Trolley MS Standard Piglet Treatment Trolley with MS Pulse Traditional Needleless 18
Piglet treatment The skin is a natural barrier that protects against invaders from the outside. When the skin is damaged, there is a higher risk of infection, even when the injury is very small. The wound should not get infected and has to heal quickly. That s not going to work when there is filthy equipment or when the environment is dirty. It doesn t concern only the treatment itself, but also the aftercare like fly- and pest control. Castrating and tail-docking A smooth and small wound will heal the fastest! Cut the tail not too short and use sharp, reliable and well maintained tools. Are the tools not adequate, then they have to be replaced. Always cut the tails in an upward direction. Disinfect the wound with MS Powderspray After use, clean all the tools. Cleaning happens with a neutral fluid, the disinfecting with Alcodes (undiluted) MS Powderspray 200 ml P 3 Alcodes Per 5 Litres 19

Extra care treatments Normally you give your piglets only standard treatments. However, it is possible that temporarily extra care for your piglets is necessary. Below there is a tip for this extra care. Splaylegs Splaylegs can be caused by heritableand/or feed factors. To help a piglet which has splaylegs, you can give it extra support with an anti-splayleg tape or adhesive tape. Tip: Begin taping at the righthand ham, go to the left behind leg, turn around the left behind leg, go crosswise to the right behind leg, turnaround this also and tape the end on the lefthand ham Leukoplast Anti-Splay Leg Tape 21
Coli-diarrhoea Blood-diarrhoea/ Clostridium Coccidiosis Rota-diarrhoea 22
Diarrhoea The most important disease in the farrowing house is diarrhoea. Of course piglets with diarrhoea need to be treated. Your veterinarian can advise you perfectly, but at the same time measures have to be taken to prevent the diarrhoea from spreading or that the next litters get contaminated with diarrhoea. Adjust the hygiene protocol in line with the problems that have occurred. Diarrhoea and recognizability The recognition of diseases is not only for the veterinarian the basis for treatment, but also for the hygiene protocol Coli-diarrhoea: Initiator: the sickening E-coli bacteria Yellow white diarrhoea, watery thin. Occurs the first few days after birth Blood-diarrhoea/Clostridium: Initiator: Clostridium perfringens Red brown diarrhoea, watery thin. Occurs the first few days after birth Coccidiosis: Initiator: Isospora suis Yellow diarrhoea, pasty to watery thin Occurs in 4-20 days after birth Rota-diarrhoea: Initiator: Rota-virus Hydro-tab Yellow grey diarrhoea, possibly with flakes Occurs in days after birth Diarrhoea Piglets with diarrhoea have lower resistance than healthy piglets. An extra care for piglets with diarrhoea is in order. Provide a warm, dry and disinfected piglet nest. spread MS Silverdust to accomplish this. Provide extra drinking water with electrolytes (Hydrotab) in a diarrhoea break-out. Tip 1: Put a Hydrotab in a piglet bowl and fill it with water. Refresh the water regularly. 23
Entering of the animal house When diseases are present at a farrowing house, extra precautionary measures have to be taken. In the farrowing house, work from young to old and always clean footgear and hands afterwards. Use disposable over-booth per pen when there is diarrhoea Special attention to hand hygiene when there is diarrhoea MS Hand Rapiddes and /or disposable gloves Hygiene protocol and disease Every disease has its own specific pathogens that must be treated on with appropriate cleaning- and disinfecting protocols Coli-diarrhoea: Pre-treatment with MS Topfoam LC ALK, concentration 2% Disinfecting with MS Megades, concentration 1.0% Blood-diarrhoea: Pre-treatment with MS Topfoam LCALK, concentration 2% Disinfect with MS Oxy-DES, concentration 1.5% Coccidiosis: Pre-treatment with MS Topfoam LC ALK, concentration 2% MS Ascar Cocciclean, concentration 4.0% Disinfecting with MS Oxy-DES, concentration 1.5% Rota-virus: Soak/wet with MS Topfoam LC ALK, concentration 2% Disinfect with MS Megades, concentration 1.0% Use MS Ascar - Cocciclean for Coccidiosis MS Ascar Cocciclean MS Megades 24
Teeth grinding When the piglets fight for a teat, it causes wounds by the sharp teeth of the piglets. These wounds give pathogens extra chances. greasy pig disease is being caused by Staphylococcus. In order to prevent this it is advisable to grind the teeth. Tip 1: Tip 2: Grind only the tips of the teeth and prevent exposing of the teeth core by grinding too much. Disinfect after every litter the head of the teeth grinder. This prevents contamination/infection between litters. Still birth To decrease the biggest cause of still birth, here are some more tips; Tip 1: Tip 2: Tip 3: Put a rubber mat under the sow the first days after farrowing. With older sows the rubber mat will give more support and the sow will lie down more carefully. Spread some MS Silverdust on a (too) slippery piglet floor, in doing so the floor gets less slippery. Make sure your sows have a good lactation. This results in stronger piglets which are able to run faster away from under the sow MS Tooth Grinding Machine 25
26 Water The forgotten nutrient
Drinking water The most important problem with drinking water is the existence of biofilm in the water-system, which is a growth- and hiding place for pathogens! Check periodically the quality of the drinking water by analysing a water sample Check your system on technical execution and prevent still-standing water Check frequently if the water supply at the nipples is sufficient Before your piglets are going to drink, flush the pipes with fresh water Treat your water with an effective product, like Di-O-Clean Di-O-Clean: Treatment for drinking water with animals in the house: Cleaning dosage 300 ml per 1000 litre water Maintenance dosage 50 ml per 1000 litre water Di-O-Clean 27
Feed Man and animal need feed to survive. Eating is something you do together has more than one meaning. One of them is that not only animals grow well by it, but also pathogens. Feed can be the source of a contamination if it is not handled with care. The same goes for water! Feeding bowls You also want to eat from a clean plate! Place feeding bowls clean and in reach Clean and dry after use 28
Weaning Weaning is the most stressful period in the young life of the piglet. Stress reduces the feed-intake of the piglet and can cause intestinal problems, resulting in many cases in post-weaning diarrhea. When piglets suffers from post-weaning diarrhoea, they stop consuming feed, but continue to drink. Adding Goldfeed Health to the drinking water helps to maintain the correct ph-level in the intestinal tract of the piglet which improves digestion and prevents growth of pathogene bacteria. Goldfeed Health contains essential oils, which allow the active ingredients of Goldfeed Health to work throughout the complete intestinal tract. Goldfeed Health improves digestion of proteins Goldfeed Health kills all undesired bacteria in the stomach Goldfeed Health prevents E-Coli contamination through manure Goldfeed Health kills all undesired bacteria in the intestinal tract Drinking water with Goldfeed Health Give your piglets a good start at weaning MS Goldfeed Health 29
