1 How Are We Doing? January produce samples were tested (at an average of 554 different pesticides per product) and we found 31 residues, two of which exceeded the MRL set for In total, we found residues in 12 samples, leaving eight samples which were residue free. We did not find any banned pesticides. After investigation the residue exceedance of nitrate present in round lettuce was found to result from the lettuce being grown undercover. As sunlight reduces the nitrate level in lettuce leaves, during winter nitrate levels are higher as the winter days are shorter and darker and the cloud level is lower. The supplier is part of the ADAS UK nitrate monitoring programme. Subsequent monitoring data has found nitrate levels to be under the MRL. The residue exceedance of benzalkonium (BAC) present in roquette was found to result from the use of sanitizers at the supplier production site. In response the supplier changed to a non BAC based sanitizer and subsequent testing has found no residues. 40% 60% We did not find any prohibited residues.
