2 Intestinal: Parasites An organism that derives shelter and/or nourishment from its host, and damages the host in the process Examples: worms (tapeworm, whipworm, pinworm, hookworm, etc.) Protozoa (giardia, amoeba) Important: Parasites are a diagnosis. Nutritionists are NOT able to diagnose or treat clients for them. Refer them to a Naturopathic Doctor (ND) or Medical Doctor (MD). Dysglycemia = imbalance in blood sugars Hypoglycemia = low blood sugar (temporary, acute condition) Hyperglycemia = high blood sugar (chronic condition) diabetes is the disease of chronic hyperglycemia Pancreas may show up also Tools Macronutrient balancing: practice of combining protein, carbohydrates and fats at every meal and snack Note: this contradicts food combining principles. Pick one! Macro-nutrient Balancing Exercise: With 1 or 2 others, create a macro-nutrient balanced meal: Breakfast Lunch Supper Snacks Liver and Gallbladder Liver is the transformation station of the body -assembles new hormones, cholesterol, bile, proteins and tissues for body maintenance -stores some nutrients: glycogen, B-12, iron -detoxifies blood of metabolic by-products, consumed toxins, converting them to less harmful waste products Liver stressors: alcohol, overeating, drugs, fried foods, sugar, chemicals, constipation Liver Dietary: General Detoxification Diet Supplements: herbal bitters Lifestyle: breathing clean AIR is critical! Psycho-spiritual connection: the liver is the seat of unexpressed anger Remember: The liver doesn t really require decontamination. Gallbladder Storage tank for bile, aiding in the emulsification of fats Gallbladder stressors Gall stones (crystallized cholesterol) Dietary Support If stones: reduce saturated fats, avoid strongly flavoured foods Supplements: ox bile / bile salts 2

3 Important Notes About the Gallbladder Flush As RHNs we are not prepared to deal with complications that may occur from this process What can go wrong? Acute pancreatitis caused most commonly by a gallstone lodging in the common bile duct. This is a MEDICAL EMERGENCY Removal of the gall bladder (to prevent future episodes from occurring) A SURGERY If client persists, recommend an ND to recommend and supervise the flush. Protect yourself! Malpractice insurance and client waiver Cardiovascular System Scores often show up here even if client does NOT have a heart condition Stressors Cardiovascular Biomarkers: Assessing Risk Through Bloodwork Cholesterol, hs c-reactive protein, homocysteine, lipoprotein A, etc. Nutritionist s Tools: Waist-Hip Ratio, body weight scale, body fat scale Psycho-spiritual connection: ability to receive and give love Respiratory System Individuals with: Asthma, sinusitis, COPD, environmental allergies, ear infections Smokers, miners, farmers, renovators, construction workers, and anyone working with chemicals Respiratory Dietary: Supplements: Lifestyle: Psycho-spiritual connection: the lungs are the seat of grief Immune - Lymphatic Thymus (Immunity) -scores here indicate under-active immunity in need of building and boosting -clients who get frequent infections Nutritional support: sugar avoidance is critical Supplements: ACESZ and D Lifestyle: adequate sleep; keeping warm, moderate exercise Immune-Lymphatic Allergies =represents an over-active immune system that needs to be pacified Dietary: Anti-inflammatory diet (elimination of gluten and dairy) Supplements: EFAs, turmeric, quercetin Lifestyle: 3

Tools: orthostatic hypotension assessment p. 180 Pituitary The concert master gives instructions to all the other endocrine organs Score does not appear unless many endocrine organs are underactive Commonly elevated in peri-menopause Recommendations: see adrenal Reproductive Women: ovaries make estrogen and progesterone Men: testes make testosterone Dysfunction of reproductive organs in both sexes can result in: Infertility Low libido Premenstrual syndrome Abnormal growths (cysts, fibroids) Menopause / andropause Psycho-spiritual connection: ability to be creative 4

5 Reproductive Estrogen Dominance : excess circulating estrogen and its artificial Mimickers Protocol to be studied more in depth in Pathology Structural System Includes bones, muscles, tendons, ligaments, joints, cartilage Chronic: Osteoporosis = porous bones, which increase fracture risk Osteoarthritis = wear and tear leading to gradual destruction of cartilage in joints Rheumatoid Arthritis = joint destruction mediated by the immune system (see Immune) Acute: Recent injury: tendonitis, sprain or strain, bursitis, etc. Structural System Dietary: anti-inflammatory diet Nervous System = Messaging Centre of the Body Supplements: glucosamine sulfate, curcumin, MSM Lifestyle: choose exercises appropriate to the age and condition of the client.
