2 SPORTS NUTRITION FOR INCOMING HIGH SCHOOL FRESHMEN 2 Sports Nutrition Nutrition and Physical Activity 9 th grade LESSON PLAN I. Description of the lesson: The purpose of this lesson is to increase student awareness in personal nutrition in preparation for possible athletic participation in high school-level sports. The lesson will build upon a previous lesson done on basic nutrition, but will incorporate some features that are relevant to sports nutrition. This will help facilitate the students learning as some of the material from the previous lesson will be review material. II. State of California Education Standards Analyze the relationship between physical activity and overall health. Distinguish between facts and myths regarding nutrition practices, products, and physical performance. Access sources of accurate information about safe and healthy weight management. Evaluate the accuracy of claims about the safety of fitness products. Create a personal nutrition and physical activity plan based on current guidelines. Select healthy foods and beverages in a variety of settings. Participate in school and community activities that promote fitness and health. III. Objectives: Students will explain what is meant by the term sports nutrition. (Cognitive, Comprehension) Students will identify healthy food choices to enhance sports performance based on MyPlate. (Cognitive, Knowledge) Students will describe the importance of nutrient sources for athletes. (Cognitive, Comprehension) Students will explain the importance of pre-meal timing for sports performance. (Cognitive, Comprehension) Students will identify healthy sports nutrition products. (Cognitive, Knowledge) Students will compare sports nutrition products. (Cognitive, Analysis) Students will recognize the importance of keeping the body hydrated. (Cognitive, Knowledge) III. Student Objectives (continued) Students will list the principles of hydration that are available on the market. (Cognitive, Knowledge) Students will describe the appropriate use of sports supplements. (Cognitive, Comprehension)

Anticipatory set (3-5 minutes) Ask the class what sports athlete(s) they look up to and whether any of them would like to be athletes in the future. Once they have named their idols, let them know that there is more to being so and so than just playing the sport; they have to undergo great preparation both mentally and physically, and perhaps even spiritually. For every athlete, the journey to greatness begins by eating healthy. V. Procedure (50 minutes) Instructional Strategies PowerPoint Lecture Title Material borrowed from (Drexel University) Student Activities Time Materials 15 min. -Computer/Laptop -PowerPoint Lecture -Projector -Screen -Paying attention to and attentively listening -Answering questions asked by instructor Lecture Review Q&A Session 15 Seconds of Fame Group Activity (4-5 students/group) Fill-in Assignment Material borrowed from (Drexel University) -Taking notes -Asking questions to clarify lecture material not clearly understood -Create a poster consisting of ONE nutritional item (images can either be hand drawn or have cut-outs from magazines) -Act like their favorite athlete, who is endorsing the item, in front of the class -Complete the assignment by filling in the blanks 10 min. N/A 20 min. -Poster boards -Magazines -Crayons, colored pencils, markers -Scissors -Glue -Tape 5 min. -Student handout VI. Closure (5 minutes) Go over the answers from the in class activity assignment, and further clarification on topics covered in class. Encourage students to make small changes in his or her diet.

Content Outline (for Instructor s Use Only) Topic of the Lesson: Sports Nutrition Date of Lesson: April 10, 2013 Length of Session: 60 min. Teaching Topics: MyPlate Athletic Fuel for Peak Performance Healthy Eating Tips for the Athlete Choosing What to Eat Vitamins & Minerals Hydration Sports Supplements Materials Required for the Lesson: Computer/Laptop PowerPoint Lecture Projector Screen Poster boards Magazines Crayons, colored pencils, markers Scissors Tape Glue Student Handouts Introduction: Begin the lesson by encouraging student participation by asking the following question: Why does nutrition matter? Discuss student responses. Answer: Good nutrition is very important for peak athletic performance. Good nutrition is need to properly fuel the body and to supply the nutrients needed to rebuild and repair the body. Share ideas, tool, or technique on how to become a healthy athlete. Fill in the blank class assignment assigned after lecture. Student Objectives (Re-stated): Students will explain what is meant by the term sports nutrition. Students will identify healthy food choices to enhance sports performance based on MyPlate. Students will describe the importance of nutrient sources for athletes. Students will explain the importance of pre-meal timing for sports performance. Students will identify healthy sports nutrition products. Students will compare sports nutrition products. Students will recognize the importance of keeping the body hydrated.
5 SPORTS NUTRITION FOR INCOMING HIGH SCHOOL FRESHMEN 5 Students will list the principles of hydration that are available on the market. Students will describe the appropriate use of sports supplements. Evaluation of the Lesson Plan and Its Effectiveness: Through student participation during the lecture. o Student will ask questions or voice their concerns regarding the lecture material. Instructor will pay attention to the types of questions asked or the concerns that are brought up by the students and answer them as best as possible. o Although student handouts were distributed, they are taking notes during lecture to help them remember the material better. Students will demonstrate their knowledge of the lecture material by the activities planned by the instructor (group activity and student handout). o The instructors will be observing student discussions and see how they engage towards each other during group activities. o Listening to their ideas on how they will come up with small changes in their diet. Barriers that May Arise in the Learning Process: Classroom disturbances during lesson o If students are caught using their electronic devices (cellphones, I pads, I touch etc.), they will be confiscated immediately and later returned at the end of the class. Students will be given a verbal warning for the first disturbance. Any consequent disturbance will result in a parent phone call. o There is always a good chance that there will be a class clown in the classroom setting. o People who look like they are paying attention but may not be engaged.
6 SPORTS NUTRITION FOR INCOMING HIGH SCHOOL FRESHMEN 6 Teacher s Notes: Information to Supplement PowerPoint Lecture and Discussion A. SLIDE#2: My Plate- Let s eat for the health of it Discuss the guidelines of healthy eating. Explain why athletes need to have good food choices in their diets. B. SLIDE#3: Athletic Fuel for Peak Performance Carbohydrates ask students to provide carbohydrate sources and/or review other sources not mentioned. o Glycogen storage needs to be replenished. o Emphasize whole grains as fiber-content keeps people satisfied longer. o Beans may not be a good choice during athletic events because it ll make people gassy (the fiber). Proteins ask students to provide protein sources and/or review other sources not mentioned. o Most athletes usually get enough protein from their diet. o Vegetarians can eat tofu and soy-based products as protein alternatives, but will require supplements to cover deficiencies (e.g. iron). o Non-calorie nutrients (vitamins, minerals and water) enhance peak performance and have their own bodily functions which are important. C. SLIDE#4: Healthy Eating Tips for the Athlete Failure to heed to the advice will cause sickness and/or poor performance during the event. o Common reaction: I don t feel so good. nausea, vomiting, dizziness o Not giving yourself enough time to digest food may make you feel sick. o Eating too close to the start of an event. o Eating too much D. SLIDE#5: Choosing What To Eat Breakfast = Brain food = Very important o Question: Who eats breakfast? Who doesn t? o Gets you through the day by providing your first boost of energy for tasks. o Those who skip out on the most important meal of the day tend to overcompensate later on. (Portion overload) These examples of snacks are low-fat. They provide readily available fuel for activities. E. SLIDE#6: Vitamins & Minerals Stress the importance of obtaining vitamins and minerals from foods rather than supplements. Pills must only be used to supplement nutrient deficiencies that are not covered in the diet. They must not compensate for it. Those from food are easily digestible compared to the pill form.

Healthy hydration provides many benefits (e.g. moistens tissues in eyes, mouth and nose.; prevents constipation; and carries oxygen to the cells. G. SLIDE#11: Sports Supplements Some people take way too many supplements than their body needs. o Can cause bodily harm, or even death, as its fluid electrolyte balance can be disturbed. (Conclude the lesson with a brief review of the material and answer any questions or concerns that the students may bring up to the instructors attention.)
