6 More mainstream than you think At least 40% of Americans utilize some sort of alternative treatment. Fish oil is the #1 reported natural product consumed by both adults and children. 7 The Great Cholesterol Myth The Lyon Diet Heart Study done by French Researchers to test the effects of different diets on heart disease. 605 men and women all had survived first heart attack, had high cholesterol, smoked, ate junk food, didn t exercise, and high levels of stress. Divided into 2 groups: Mediterranean diet and prudent diet Mediterranean fresh fruits and veggies, olive oil, whole grains, legumes, nuts, seafood. Prudent diet less than 30% calories from fat, 10% sat fat, max of 300mg cholesterol per day. Result??? The Great Cholesterol Myth The study was stopped because it was deemed unethical to continue The Mediterranean Diet group had a 70% reduction in deaths and 76% reduction in cardiovascular deaths. So, what happened to their cholesterol levels?? THEY DIDN T BUDGE. A 76% reduction in deaths from heart disease but NO CHANGE in cholesterol (neither total nor LDL) The New England Journal of Medicine refused to publish the study. (The Lancet later did) The Great Cholesterol Myth SUGAR is the dietary enemy it is NOT fat or cholesterol. Chronic INFLAMMATION is the root problem. CALCIUM buildup in arterial walls is a better predictor Agatston score developed by Dr Agatston (The South Beach Diet doc) STRESS may be the overriding trigger the Roseto Effect. 5

8 Coenzyme Q10 A powerful antioxidant which is an essential component in the mitochondria for production of ATP. All patients on statin drugs MUST be encouraged to take CoQ10 100mg BID. CoQ10 is important for energy production in the heart as well as preventing oxidation of cholesterol pattern B LDL is the oxidized form which is sticky and inflammatory. Significant improvement with intermittent claudication and 98meter increase in walking distance with PAD patients. Omega 3 Fish Oil Supplement for EVERYONE! Quality is so important with fish oil US standards are poor; follow European or Norwegian standards to find quality products. Standard companies use GMP guidelines for purity does not address oxidation or amount of DHE/EPA in product. Most recommendations are for 1000mg of Fish Oil per day. Most labels tout 1000mg fish oil that is the TOTAL amount in the gel, NOT the amount of DHA+EPA. 6

10 Magnesium Has over 300 functions in the body and most people are deficient. RELAXER dilates the arteries to lower blood pressure, relaxes muscles, helps with sleep. 13 Clinical Pearls To methylate/metabolize estrogens use Resveratrol, NAC, and TMG. MethylB12 and MTHF are not enough. Theanine is a wonderful anti anxiety supplement nonsedating. The Microbiome is a new field of emerging research. Vitamin E will do as much harm as good if it is alpha tocopherol alone. Mixed tocopherols and/or high gamma tocopherol forms are necessary! CoQ10 and Vitamin E work well together synergistically. The gut is the core of our bodies, and health. Inflammation is at the core of most, if not all, chronic disease. Thank You!!
