3 A Letter from the Course Chairpersons Dear Colleagues, It is with great pleasure that we welcome you to the inaugural AOVET Master s Course in Sports Medicine and Traumatology. Canine sporting events have become increasingly popular worldwide and performance expectations are often high. Dogs that compete in sporting activities such as field trial, agility, flyball, and racing experience a higher level of orthopedic trauma than the general population of dogs, and even minor injuries can negatively affect performance. Optimal diagnosis, treatment and post-operative management are necessary to maximize success and allow a return to performance. This novel course gathers the best available evidence and clinical experience to meet these needs. Through a unique expert-guided format, it will allow the development of skills specific to the sporting dog including nuances of patient evaluation, diagnostic assessment and the application of the AO Principles of fracture management. Participants will have the opportunity to interact with world-class faculty through interactive presentations, small group discussion forums and hands-on laboratory sessions. The complete patient approach is considered including discussion of the various sporting events, the musculoskeletal impact of repetitive motions, diagnostic imaging, soft tissue injuries, fractures of the distal extremities, splints & orthotics, and methods to improve recovery after injury. Operative techniques of various tendon and ligament Table of Contents CME Mission 4 Statement Course Description 5 Target Audience 6 Learner Objectives 6 Accreditation 6 Designation 6 Statement Faculty 7 8 Educational 9 15 Objectives Final Program Location Key 22 Presentation 23 Information Future Courses 24 repair methods, fracture repair, arthrodesis, and orthotic measurement and manufacturing are practiced in the laboratory setting to optimize the participants experience. Our ultimate goal for this course is to provide an educational experience that exceeds all of your expectations in advancing your knowledge and skills in the art and science of canine sporting injuries. We hope you are looking forward to your participation in the 2017 AOVET North America Master s Course: Canine Sports Medicine Traumatology. Both the course faculty and staff from AO North America look forward to seeing you in Phoenix. Sincerely, Mary Sarah Bergh, DVM, MS, DACVS, DACVSMR Alessandro Piras, DVM, ISVS
4 4 Master s Course: Canine Sports Medicine Traumatology September 7 9, 2017 CME Mission Statement The Continuing Medical Education (CME) mission of AO North America (AONA ) is to provide comprehensive multidisciplinary needs-based education to surgeons, fellows, and residents in the specialties of orthopedic, hand, craniomaxillofacial, spine, neurosurgery, and veterinary surgery in the areas of trauma (i.e., operative reduction and fixation), degenerative disorders, deformities, tumors and reconstruction. Expected results of AONA s CME activities for surgeons, fellows, and residents are to: Increase their knowledge base and surgical skill level Improve competence by applying advances of knowledge in patient care in the areas of trauma, degenerative disorders, deformities, tumors and reconstructive surgical techniques Address practice performance gaps by improving management of aspects of traumatic injuries and musculoskeletal disorders (i.e., pre-operative planning to post-operative care)
5 Master s Course: Canine Sports Medicine Traumatology September 7 9, Course Description Veterinary orthopedics is a rapidly growing field with new concepts and techniques constantly being developed. In fact, in response to this need, the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), has recognized new specialty colleges. In 2010, the American College of Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation was formed to advance the awareness, care and performance of sporting animals. Dogs that compete in sporting activities such as field trial, agility, flyball and racing / coursing, experience a higher level of orthopedic trauma than the general population of dogs, and even minor injuries can negatively affect performance. Optimal diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation therapy is needed to maximize success and allow for a return to athletic function in most patients. Canine sporting activities have become more popular over the past several decades and this has increased the need for veterinarians skilled in diagnosing and treating these conditions. The level of skill needed for diagnosis and treatment of such injuries is often beyond the scope of what is possible to be taught in most veterinary schools. As both complex fractures and tendon / ligament injuries are encountered in canine athletes, adequate and complete educational coverage of this important set of topics is a necessity. Prerequisite Completion of the AOVET Small Animal Basic Principles course is a prerequisite for attending the Masters Course: Canine Sports Medicine Traumatology.
6 6 Master s Course: Canine Sports Medicine Traumatology September 7 9, 2017 Target Audience Enrollment is open to veterinary residents and practicing veterinarians especially those interested in diagnosing and treating sports related injuries in the canine patient. Learner Objectives At the conclusion of this Course, the participant should be able to: Describe complete evaluation of the canine athlete regarding examination, gait analysis and diagnostic imaging Describe muscle, tendon, and ligament healing and surgical methods for repair or replacement Recognize and apply AO Principles to fracture management in the canine athlete Identify and select appropriate techniques to problems such as nonunions, infections and technical errors that are critical for successful patient outcomes Discuss the importance of preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative planning and other aspects of the clinical decision making process, in small animal surgery and sports medicine traumatology Accreditation AO North America is a Registry of Approved Continuing Education (RACE) Provider (Number 244). Designation Statement This program was reviewed and approved by the AAVSB RACE program for 24.5 hours of continuing education credit in jurisdictions which recognize AAVSB RACE approval. Please contact the AAVSB RACE program if you have any comments/concerns regarding this program s validity or relevancy to the veterinary profession.
