Anxiety, OCD & PTSD Learning Targets: To identify characteristics & symptoms of Anxiety, OCD & PTSD To discuss what life is like for people with Anxiety, OCD & PTSD
Anxiety Based Disorders They are in a state of intense apprehension, nervousness, uneasiness, uncertainty, or fear. Types: GAD, Phobias, Panic disorders, Agoraphobia, Social Anxiety Disorder
Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) Overwhelming and constant sense of worry for 6+ months Uneasy, anxious MOST of the time, the CAUSE of the anxiety can t be pinned down ⅔ are women

"Mine are like I can't stand up, I can't speak. All I feel is an intense amount of pain all over, like something is just squeezing me into this little ball. If it is really bad I can't breathe, I start to hyperventilate and I throw up."
"At their worst, you can be thrown to the ground and totally unable to function. It feels like a terrorist attack or being chased by dinosaurs -- yet while you want to run for your life, you can't."
"My body feels tingly and I get dizzy. I feel like ice is running through my veins. I want to run away from my body but I can't, of course. Shallow breathing. Heart racing. Total panic."
Agoraphobia The fear of public spaces and open spaces. the fear of the marketplace The fear of panic hitting WHILE IN A PUBLIC SPACE and not being able to escape or help not being available. Crowds, bridges, buses, standing in line, being in open spaces

Social Phobia (social anxiety disorder) differs from agoraphobia in that people with social anxiety disorder fear being scrutinized having a conversation, eating in front of others, giving a speech, etc in children it must occur in peer settings, not just with adults afraid of acting in a way that will be negatively received by others (be rejected by or offend others) social situations almost always provoke fear or anxiety in children- tantrums, crying, freezing, clinging, shrinking or failing to speak in social situations lasts 6+ months
person experiences sudden episodes of irrational, intense dread when faced with certain object lasts for 6+ months causes distress or impairment in social, occupational or other important areas of functioning Specific Phobias 7-9% of population in US designs life around avoiding the phobic stimulus

Obsessive-Compulsive and Related Disorders
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) Persistent unwanted thoughts (obsessions) Need to engage in a particular action (compulsions). Rituals (1+ hour per day) goal is to reduce the anxiety Examples: Obsession about dirt and germs may lead to compulsive hand washing

Obsessive-Compulsive Related Disorders: Hoarding Disorder Hoarding is the excessive collection of items, along with the inability to discard them. Most have no other OCD symptoms. Some people also collect animals, keeping dozens or hundreds of pets often in unsanitary conditions.

trauma and stressor related
PTSD is when memories of a traumatic event (war, natural disaster, personal attack) cause intense feelings of anxiety even up to the point where persistent nightmares or flashbacks can dominate one's life. if it lasts from 3-30 days it s called acute stress disorder The Vietnam War unfortunately provided thousands of examples of PTSD, at the time called flashbacks...wwi called it shell shock.
Where do these Disorders come from? Behaviorists Socio-Cultural (Environment) Evolutionary Cognitive Psychoanalytic Biological GABA Serotonin Amygdala Make sure you have this stuff in your notes from your READING...yes, remember, we read??? :)
