2 My experience over 90% have mental health issues a) If addicts don t get help, their chances of remaining sober aren t good b) Most common depression and anxiety c) Many addicts used alcohol, drugs and abused benzos in order to manage anxiety 1. Complex Trauma and anxiety a) Anxiety = lack of resources not having the resources to handle a situation b) Complex Trauma is about a child feeling all alone in an unsafe world due to abuse, neglect, abandonment

3 c) Things that create anxiety change, new situations, unknown, intimacy, success, not feeling in control d) All of these have led to getting hurt in the past. The brain tries to protect them by jumping to worst-case-scenario whenever they face anything new e) Creates a strong F,F,F response and hypervigilance, insecurity and startle response FFF response morphs into control issues, manipulation, isolators, perfectionists, procrastinators

4 f) Fears i. What people think of you ii. Being trapped in a place with no exits iii. Constant feeling of being overwhelmed iv. Of dying, or of passing out v. Of losing control, of going to sleep, dreams vi. Of impending doom vii.of making mistakes or making a fool of yourself to others viii.that you are losing your mind, going crazy ix. Of certain emotions or thoughts x. Of not being near an exit or washroom

Types of Anxiety Disorders a) Panic Disorder - Excessive fear of the bodily sensations associated with a panic attack b) Social Anxiety Disorder - Excessive fear of embarrassment/humiliation or of being evaluated negatively by people due to saying or doing the wrong thing c) Agoraphobia - Excessive fear of being in a situation in which escape may be difficult or assistance unavailable public places, traffic jams, isolated places, parks

6 d) ADHD e) OCD - Obsessive Compulsive Disorder i. Obsessions - fear of contamination, unwanted thoughts or urges, superstitions (fear that if they don t do certain rituals, something bad will happen) ii. Compulsions - Washing, cleaning, counting, checking, ordering/arranging, touching/tapping, hoarding, mental rituals f) Specific Phobias i. Situations flying, bridges, elevators, being put under for operation ii. Natural environment dogs, spiders, heights, storms

7 g) GAD - Generalized Anxiety Disorder i. People are full of worry even when their life is going well ii. Worry themes health, relationships, money, job, world affairs, tasks 3. Symptoms a) Thinking i. Persistent worrying or obsession about small or large concerns that's out of proportion to the impact of the event busy brain, incessant brain chatter ii. Inability to let go of a worry iii. Worrying about excessively worrying

8 iv. Difficulty concentrating, or the feeling that your mind "goes blank brain fog v. Distress about making decisions for fear of making the wrong decision vi. Carrying every option in a situation all the way out to its possible negative conclusion vii. Believe lies viii.difficulty handling uncertainty want everything black and white b) Physical signs and symptoms may include: i. Fatigue, Trouble sleeping ii. Irritability

9 iii. Muscle tension or muscle aches, clenched teeth or teeth grinding iv. Trembling, feeling twitchy, sweating v. Nausea, diarrhea or IBS vi. Headaches, dizziness, light-headedness vii.when you close your eyes you feel like are beginning to, or will, float upwards viii.easily startled ix. Shooting pains, stabbing pains, and odd pressures in the neck, head, or face Note: Worries can shift from one concern to another and may change with time and age

10 c) Mood/Emotions (anxiety symptoms commonly associated with mood/emotions) i. Always feeling angry and lack of patience expectations of others goes up ii. Irritable, being on edge or 'grouchy' iii. Depression iv. You feel overwhelmed v. Nanosecond escalation to anger, fear, fight, flight when anxiety is triggered vi. Dramatic mood swings (emotional flipping) vii.feel like crying for no apparent reason viii.have no feelings about things you used to

11 viii.feel detached from loved ones, emotionally numb ix. Feeling like things are unreal or dreamlike x. Underlying sense of impending doom 4. Dealing with anxiety in a healthy way a) If too paralyzing, medication may be necessary. Be careful, benzos are addictive b) Perspective - Anxiety makes you feel like a helpless child again - all alone against a big bad world, with no resources You now have resources Tools, Friends, spiritual

12 c) Face fears with a plan i. Stop numbing and avoiding ii. Take little steps iii. Have a safety plan if it gets too overwhelming d) Distress Tolerance i. Triggers limbic, Shuts down cortex ii. DBT mindfulness and grounding iii. De-escalate emotions so that you can think/process iv. Note: will have to sit in some distress e) Remind self of truth
