4 Nationwide Children s Hospital/The Ohio State University 2012 Top Clinical Abstract Midwest Society of Pediatric Research (SPR): Given to top clinical abstract among junior faculty, fellows, and residents RESEARCH SUPPORT COMPLETED RESEARCH Internal CRI Grant Backes (PI) 2/1/2009 Delayed Umbilical Cord Clamping in the Extremely Low Birth Weight Neonate (ELBW): Effects on Endothelial Progenitor Cell (EPC) and Cytokine Levels The goal of this study is to evaluate the safety and efficacy of cord clamping among infants born extremely premature and evaluate potential biological mechanisms Principal Investigator: Backes 10,000 PEER REVIEWED Backes (PI) 7/1/2010 6/30/2013 Randomized, controlled trial of early versus delayed umbilical cord clamping in infants with congenital heart disease This is a prospective clinical trial evaluating whether delayed umbilical cord clamping is advantageous as compared with immediate cord clamping for infants who require early cardiothoracic surgery for palliation of a congenital heart lesion. We will evaluate clinical and biochemical variables to elucidate potential differences between the groups. 5 Expanding the Outpatient Methadone Education Program: Are We Making a Difference? The funding priority that our grant addresses is to increase health education and information available to pregnant women who use alcohol or other drugs, and in this case are being treated with methadone. We will investigate if our efforts over the past year not only improve retention rates but also if it strengthens relationship between these at-risk women and their health care providers.
