JUSTIFICATION FORM USC Columbia, Lancaster, Salkehatchie, Sumter & Union campuses JUS This form Columbia Exercise Science Degree Program (if applicable): Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) D Undergraduate IZI Graduate PHYT Manual Therapy II It is proposed that the credit hours for PHYT 755- Manual Therapy II be increased from 2 to 3. Since the creation of the course, the content has expanded to include newer techniques such as dry needling and cupping therapy. As a result, additional class time has been added to accommodate the instruction of these new techniques. With 70 contact hours per semester, the instruction time justifies the increase from 2 to 3 credit hours. University of South Carolina I Provost Office I Justification Form Oct 2010 v3

Physical Therapy Program Department of Exercise Science, School of Public Health University of South Carolina Instructor: Cathy Frola Arnot, DPT, OCS, MTC, FAAOMPT Phone: Office: 101 N arnot@mailbox.sc.edu PHYT755 Manual Therapy II Course Description: PHYT 755 is an advanced course to enhance physical therapy students' manual skills. Techniques taught will include mobilization, mobilization with movement, manipulation, muscle energy, taping, soft tissue mobilization, massage and integration of techniques into clinical practice. Course Overview: This course comes after Fundamentals of Physical Therapy 720, Orthopedics I 750, Orthopedics II 751, and Manual Therapy I 754. The expectation for students is that they have mastered the skills for patient examination to include goniometry, manual muscle testing, principles of range of motion, stretching and strengthening exercise, and basic mobilization techniques. Class Rules: Cell phones are off or silenced. Class begins on time. Latecomers should enter without disrupting the class. Side conversations during lecture are considered inappropriate. Appropriate lab clothes are gym shorts for males and gym shorts and sports bras for females. Keep fingernails short and filed. Credit Hours: 3 graduate credit hours. 70 contact hours. Admission limited to students enrolled in the Doctor of Physical Therapy Program. Teaching Strategies: Teaching strategies used in this class include: lecture and class discussion, video demonstration, laboratory demonstration, active participation and independent reading. Required Text: Orthopedic Manual Therapy: An Evidence-Based Approach, 2"d Edition by Chad E. Cook. Course Objectives: At the completion of this course, the student should be able to: 1. Select an appropriate manual therapy technique (distraction, mobilization, manipulation, muscle energy, massage, ART, neural tension and/or myofascial technique) to address a patient's specific spinal impairment. [CC-5.39a,d] 2. Perform the selected techniques in a safe, appropriate and effective manner. [CC-5.30k]

3. Integrate manual therapy techniques for the spine and extremities into clinical practice in a safe and effective manner. 4. Use clinical judgment and reflection to identify best manual therapy techniques to minimize errors and enhance patient/client outcomes. [CC-5.19] 5. Consistently apply current research, theory, and professional judgment when applying manual therapy techniques. [CC5.20] 6. Examine and apply treatment techniques using the principles of risk management. [CC- 5.43] 7. Explain common physical therapy examination and management options for the incontinent patient. (Pelvic Floor) [CC-5.19, CC-5.20, CC-5.39 a, h] Evaluation: The evaluation procedures for this class will be designed to measure successful completion of the course objectives. Specific evaluation procedures will be developed by the instructor assigned to the course. Student performance will be evaluated using oral and practical assignments as well as professional behavior. Students must achieve a grade of B or better on each examination or be required to complete remedial work and retake the exam. The total points earned for each assignment will be divided by the total number of possible points earned and converted to a final class grade based on the scale below. A=.90 to 1.00 B =.80 to.89 C=.70to.79 F = <.69 Grades will be based upon performance on the following: Practical Examinations (7) Written Examinations (2) 1 0 points each 20 points each Points will be deducted from your final grade for absenteeism, tardiness, or failure to conduct yourself professionally. Class attendance is mandatory. If you are unable to attend a class please contact the instructor prior to class. Each student is responsible for all the content contained in the lecture and any assigned reading material. Five points will be deducted from the students final grade for each and any unexcused absence, 1 point for tardiness. 2

.OPT Remediation Policy: Students receiving less than a passing grade (80 percent) on any evaluation (written or practical) in a PHYT course will be required to remediate that content. While the content and structure of the remediation sessions are course dependent (determined by the instructor), the remediation grading policy is consistent across all PHYT courses. Remediation is considered a second attempt to secure knowledge or clinical skills to insure that you are a safe and competent practitioner. Remediation is not used to replace a poor grade in a class. Remediation of an evaluation will not change your original score which will be used to calculate your final class average Students are provided only one attempt at remediation and if an evaluation is not successfully passed a second time, the student will be dropped from the class. If successful, remediation will result in the student being allowed to continue in the class. If at the conclusion of the semester, your final class average is below 80 percent due solely to remediation in the class, you will receive the minimum passing grade for the course. A faculty member can use a number of factors to determine your final grade. If other factors (other than those you have remediated) contribute to your final average falling below the minimum passing grade, the grade for the course will be determined by the instructor using the criteria established for the class. In a given course, students are expected NOT to exhibit a pattern of needing remediation which might result in dismissal from the class ("pattern" determined by course instructor). Faculty observing a pattern of remediation will warn the student that further remediation will result in failure of the class. Remediation is a privilege provided by the faculty and is granted to students enrolled in the DPT program. Faculty will periodically review a student's academic performance across the program of study and may discipline a student who demonstrates a pattern of needing remediation. Faculty has the right to withdraw the opportunity for remediation from individual students abusing this privilege. Students having their remediation privilege revoked and not passing a subsequent evaluation (written or practical) will result in failure of the course. Remediation Instructions specific to PHYT 755 Student is responsible for setting up this experience and completing it within 2 weeks of the exam being remediated. Written test remediation: o Meet with the instructor and review the exam. Must be able to pass the original written test orally and explain why the original wrong answer was incorrect. Practical test remediation o An additional exam is administered, this may be longer and more challenging than the original practical Reasonable accommodations are available for students with a documented disability. If you have a disability and may need accommodations to fully participate in this class, contact the Office of Student Disability Services: , TDD , sasds@mailbox.sc.edu, or stop by LeConte College Room 112A. All accommodations must be approved through the Office of Student Disability Services. 3

Students enrolled in this course are bound by the University Of South Carolina Code Of Academic Responsibility. Students should make themselves familiar with this code which can be found in the U.S.C. - Columbia Student Handbook and Policy Guide. This rule specifically states It is the responsibility of every student at the University of South Carolina at Columbia to adhere steadfastly to truthfulness and to avoid dishonesty, fraud or deceit of any type in connection with any academic program. Any student who violates this rule or who knowingly assists another to violate this rule shall be subject to discipline 4
