If unsure provide key for abbreviations when submitting assignments. Course Description: Introduction to basic examination and intervention principles and techniques for posture and positioning, basic mobility with and without assistive devices, soft tissue mobilization, and physical agents, for improving functional mobility and for managing a variety of clinical problems. Course Objectives: At the completion of this course with a passing grade, the student will be able to: 1. Display professional behaviors in all interactions with patients, clients, families, caregivers, peers, vendors, other health care providers, students, academic and clinical faculty as observed during class and role playing situations. 2. Practice self-assessment of own clinical reasoning and demonstrate psychomotor performance to improve effectiveness of patient care and to enhance patient outcomes. 3. Describe and apply the components of effective clinician-patient communication and patient-related instruction (verbal and written) in a culturally competent manner, including active involvement of the patient/family, and their values and goals. 1

2 4. Integrate available best evidence into practice at a basic level, including application of anatomy and histology. 5. Demonstrate culturally appropriate teaching methods for the level of the learner, including communication to the patient, family/caregiver, and support personnel. 6. At a basic level, selects and demonstrates appropriate examination/re-examination methods for: a. Soft tissue and mobility b. Relaxation c. Function in basic and instrumental activities of daily living d. Integumentary quality e. Circulation f. Body mechanics g. Balance h. Pain i. Posture j. Sensory k. Range of Motion/muscle length l. Muscle Performance 7. Evaluate and respond to emergent and non-emergent basic data from the examination and reexamination to make clinical judgments regarding patients. 8. Demonstrate proficiency in practicing in a safe manner for one s own welfare as well as for that of patients and others. 9. Select and demonstrate appropriate physical therapy interventions to achieve patient goals and outcomes: a. soft tissue mobilization b. relaxation c. functional training in basic activities of daily living d. functional training in instrumental activities of daily living e. prescription of ambulatory assistive devices f. integumentary protection techniques g. physical agents 10. Determine the components of interventions that may be directed to the physical therapist assistant. 11. Demonstrate basic documentation of patient problems and physical therapy interventions using the appropriate format with objective, measurable short term and long term goals within the International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health (ICF) framework. 2

3 Required Text(s), resources, and readings: all required items are expected to be reviewed before listed class. A copy of each textbook has been requested to be put on reserve for the summer semester at the Health Sciences Library (HSL). All class materials, such as lectures, lab handouts, assignments, video clip resources will be posted on canvas. Each class will be recorded on Panopto whenever possible. 4 Evaluation Methods: Pain Quiz 5% Histology Quizzes 15% Pop Quizzes 5% Skills Check thermal agents & compression wrapping pass Written Take home exam 15% Mobility Competencies 20% Wheelchair Experience/Discussion board 10% Final Written 25% Class participation/professional behaviors 5% PT Program Grading Scale will be followed in this class: Grade Percentage Grade Points Level of Competence A Clear Excellence A B B B C C Minimum acceptable level of professional competence For this course, a grade of 73 is required to pass the course. Assignments: Wheelchair experience with blackboard discussion: Full description of this assignment is available on canvas. This is a level #2 assignment (refer to student P&P): specifically this means that you pair with someone for the wheelchair experience but you write the canvas discussion individually. Given your class schedule and availability of wheelchairs, you have until July 31, 2014 to complete the assignment. Quizzes: Pain quiz on canvas Histology quizzes on canvas linked to each histology module (3) Two Pop quizzes administered during class Skills Check-off: thermal agents and compression wrapping; each student in a pair will perform 2 skills (one thermal agent, one compression wrapping) in order to demonstrate competency. You must pass each skill. If you do not pass, two retakes are allowed. You must pass the skills check-off to pass the course. Written Mid-term Take Home Exam: consists of multiple choice and short answers questions. 4

5 Mobility (transfers, bed mobility/positioning, ambulation training, and wheelchair mobility) competencies: each student in a pair will perform 2 skills from provided list of skills covered in class. You must receive at least 36.5/50 points (73%) on each skill to pass. Refer to the mobility competency grading form for the specific criteria required. If you do not meet a grade of 73%, you will be able to retake the skill(s). Remediation with an instructor is necessary before the retake. You must meet the same passing criteria on the retake but will receive only 36.5 points (73%) per skill. Two retakes are allowed. You must pass the competencies in order to pass the course. Improper footwear may preclude you from taking the exam at the scheduled time. If this occurs, you will start with 2 point deduction for your rescheduled exam. Final written exam: comprehensive, multiple choice and short answer Class participation and professional behaviors: see below Course Policies: Honor Code: You are expected to adhere to the honor code. For any type of exam (competencies, take home exam, quiz in-class, quiz on Canvas, in-class exam), you are expected to refrain from sharing any information with others about the exam (content, your experience, results, etc.) until all students have taken the exam. Your signature on any assignment and exam/quiz and submission of electronic assignments means you have done your own work with only the assistance of your notes and text resources without use of people resources. Course coordinator can clarify any questions you may have. Professional Behaviors: Each student is expected to conduct her/himself in a respectful and professional manner. This includes, but is not limited to the following: being punctual and prepared for every lecture and laboratory session; respecting her/his classmates and the faculty during class discussions; working independent of classmates when asked to do so; working in a positive and productive manner with classmates during lab; respecting oneself by presenting her/his own ideas and opinions in a positive and thoughtful manner that promotes the attention and respect of classmates and faculty; and being committed to a positive learning experience. You must demonstrate acceptable professional behaviors to pass the course. It is not acceptable to do work other than related to course content during class. You may be asked to discontinue non-related tasks and/or be asked to leave class. Please silence your cell phones. Class participation: includes but is not limited to: professional behaviors, participation in labs, and evidence of having prepared for class; keeping lab tidy and safe: equipment stored, etc. It is the responsibility of each of you to maintain a safe and tidy lab space for all students at all times. Lab Attire: refer to student P&P for dress code. Halter tops (or bathing suit tops) and athletic (not jeans) shorts are required for most labs for ease of observation and palpation. Gowns are required if you forget your lab attire or the halter top is covering the scapulothoracic region or any area needing to be observed and/or palpated. Athletic-type shoes (not flip flops, sandals, etc.) are required for safety with gait, transfer, and wheelchair activities. Long exercise pants or shorts are best for any sliding board transfer activities and okay for gait to roll up pant legs above knees. Jeans or jeans shorts are not suitable lab attire. You are expected to change into lab clothes before lab begins. You should have full lab attire for each lab unless otherwise noted on schedule. You may be asked to observe only or leave class if you do not have appropriate lab attire, particularly footwear as it relates to safety. 5

6 Attendance policy: If you miss class or a laboratory session, the instructor will be available to answer any questions you have after you have reviewed the content with a classmate, viewed relevant video recordings, and/or read the assignments for the class and/or lab. If you arrive late to class, it will be your responsibility to obtain the information and/or announcements you missed. In fairness to your classmates who are punctual, the information will not be repeated. Class/lab will start on time and labs will end a few minutes early in order to clean up the lab space and allow you time to get to your next class. NOTE WELL: Due to space and equipment, you are asked to attend labs according to your group assignment in order to keep an even distribution of participants (see schedule listed in syllabus). This course emphasizes safety for you and for patients, including but not limited to proper body mechanics, safe footwear, clearing contraindications/precautions for interventions, proper guarding, locking equipment, etc. Flip flops, sandals, and/or any open toed and/or footwear without a heel strap, are not permitted when performing transfers, lifts, ambulation with assistive devices, and wheelchair skills. You will not be allowed to participate in lab activities or to take the mobility competencies if you do not have appropriate footwear. Rescheduling will result in point deduction. Policy Regarding Assignment Requirements: Faculty use a variety of formats for course assignments ranging from situations in which students work entirely on their own to situations in which students work collaboratively in pairs or in small groups, with a range of options in between. Students are responsible for paying close attention to the guidelines given by the course instructor(s). In the event of uncertainty, students should err on the side of working independently and ask for clarification. Refer to student P&P for specific guidelines regarding group assignments.
