MR ADAM R. WHATLEY MSC.OST (MED), PT REGISTERED OSTEOPATH EXPERT WITNESS (MEDICO-LEGAL) EXERCISE SPECIALIST 64 Fernhill Road, Solihull, Birmingham B92 7RU Telephone: (0121) - Mobile: info@dynamicosteopaths.com Web: PERSONAL PROFILE Adam Whatley Registered Osteopath (Med), PT, MSc.Ost Mr Whatley is registered and licensed Osteopath (MSc.Ost) and an Expert Witness (Medico-Legal) practising out of the Birmingham and Warwickshire areas who specialises in the area of neuro-musculoskeletal practice. Mr Whatley has also completed my Master s degree in the treatment and management of advanced musculoskeletal pain and dysfunction, and is currently practicing within the Medico-Legal sector. Mr Whatley has a established background working with a variety of patients (performance, rehabilitation and clinical treatment/management) and has established connections with local GP s who work within the care commissioning role. In addition, Mr Whatley is also beginning my PhD in Clinical Neuroscience (Specialising in Pain Neurophysiology and Rehabilitation). Mr Whatley currently has clinics operating out of North Warwickshire and Birmingham under Dynamic Osteopaths. Mr Whatley also carries out clinical exercise rehabilitation and performance in Solihull, with Urban Body Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation, where he sees a wide range of varied private clients and athletes from the local area. MEDICO-LEGAL BACKGROUND Mr Whatley has a particular interest in Personal Injury, Clinical Negligence and Rehabilitation, with ongoing experience writing medico-legal reports, investigating complaints and claims. Mr Whatley also has a good knowledge of the English Legal System along with the elements of risk management and safety. Experience in receiving case files and writing medico-legal reports and face cross examination by a barrister. Meet with lawyers who practice in this field. INTEREST AREA/S Working from past experiences in the clinical setting, Mr Whatley has gained a huge interest in the area/s of musculoskeletal medicine & performance, advanced human kinematics and clinical neurology, in addition to neuromusculoskeletal rehabilitation. Within Mr Whatley s area of clinical practice, I work in the diagnosis and treatment (manual and physical therapy) of neuro-musculoskeletal conditions. Mr Whatley has previously covered a great deal in the combined areas of neuro-musculokeletal dysfunction and clinical medicine, alongside sports performance and human movement.

Mr Whatley has a comprehensive established background in the combined areas of theory based clinical medicine and dysfunction, alongside patient interaction, understanding and practical management. For some time now I Mr Whatley has been very keen to explore the vast area of injury rehabilitation and how alterations in motor control can lead to neuro-musculoskeletal dysfunction. It is Mr Whatley s aim to better understand the underlying mechanisms for motor control and the way in which the central nervous system compensates for deficits in varied conditions. Mr Whatley has an interest in the development of clinical testing and new rehabilitation for patients with dysfunction and gathering new therapeutic approaches to enhance neuromuscular performance. The experience and background has been previously received working in the region of rehabilitative performance training and in the clinical setting, in addition to completing his Master s degree in the region of advanced musculoskeletal practice. Mr Whatley studied Osteopathy (Med), out of Oxford where he was trained to be a Primary Care Practitioner in the field of Neuro-musculoskeletal Medicine. This provided Mr Whatley with the opportunity to help others, and further enhance his background in dysfunction. Following his Master s Degree, he began to start my PhD in Clinical Neuroscience and Human movement, thus alongside practice. During his time studying out of Oxford, he has been regularly seeing patients in private practice in Birmingham/Warwickshire, giving me almost 10 years experience treating and working with patients in the clinical setting. He is a Registered Osteopath and Expert Witness, licensed to practice in primary healthcare, where he has his own private Osteopathic Spinal Pain Clinics in operation. Mr Whatley also practices out of a private surgery/clinic alongside a very well-known and heavily regarded private GP and cosmetic surgeon named Dr N Jha. To date, Mr Whatley works specifically in musculoskeletal assessment, treatment and rehabilitation (neuromusculoskeletal diagnosis and management), alongside performance enhancement. As a trained osteopath Mr Whatley has come from a different background from physiotherapist, whereby, yes he has competed advanced biomechanics and rehab but also Mr Whatley trained in advanced spinal manual therapy and clinical medicine. Mr Whatley s study in neurophysiology is based on neuropsychological components which relate or maintain chronic pain, which can ultimately effect cerebral mapping in the brain and affect motor firing patterns, therefore affecting performance. I have an experienced background in working with athletes (performance and clinical treatment), in the area of sports medicine and now seeking the opportunity to further develop this exciting field. PREVIOUS BACKGROUND An enthusiastic, highly motivated and extremely ambitious individual, who would be a great asset to any company. Mr Whatley sets his-self extremely high standards and aims to continually exceed expectations, by delivering a high level of work ethic and service at all times. Mr Whatley has excellent communications skills both verbal and written with high amounts of experience in the clinical setting alongside working in the Healthcare and Fitness industry. He also holds an extensive military background with a report of Exemplary. Mr Whatley has achieved a high quality and extensive background in professional exercise and Sports Therapy. He is an excellent team worker who works well in a team environment or independently and also shows strong interpersonal skills. Mr Whatley also has a high capability of working unsupervised with long term experience in this field. Mr Whatley served with in the Armed Forces for four years and went on numerous operational tours of duty. After which, I went onto study professional exercise and Sports Therapy. Following this, he then went on to become a very successful performance coach/trainer and then progressing onto becoming the Personal Training (PT) Manager within the highly regarded company of Fitness Agents carrying out such roles as PT recruitment, PT mentoring and general PT management and promotion of self-management and development. Alongside continuation of professional exercise, Mr Whatley also went on to study Osteopathy (Med) out of Oxford, and in addition to studying my Honours degree I also went on to study my Master s Degree in Osteopathy (M.Ost) to further gain advanced knowledge in neuro-musculoskeletal dysfunction and clinical uncertainty. Mr Whatley s background in exercise physiology, orthopaedic medicine, clinical neuroscience and musculoskeletal practice with patients experiencing a variety of neuro-musculoskeletal conditions makes him ideally placed to practice

within personal injury and rehabilitation. His clinical work substantially involves diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic neuro-musculoskeletal dysfunction, along with neuromuscular rehabilitation. ACADEMIC EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND - September 19th June 2013 Registered and Licensed Osteopath BSc (Hons) Osteopathy / MSc (Med) Osteopathy (M.Ost) - July 6th October 20th 2006 Premier Training International Diploma in Personal Training and Sports Therapy - September June 2003 John Willmott secondary School and Sixth Form GNVQ Leisure and Tourism Qualifications / Training: Master of Osteopathy (Med), Musculoskeletal Acupuncture Advanced Clinical Whiplash Medico-Legal Skill and Expert Witness course Diploma in Personal Training and Sports Therapy Merit Completion Completion Completion Distinction Science: Double award (GCSE) Science: Double award (GCSE) English (GCSE) English Lit (GCSE) Design and Technology GNVQ in Leisure and Sport Computer Literacy and Information Technology NVQ Level 2 in Engineering Communication Problem Solving Working with others B A B B B Pass - Merit Stage 1 (CLAIT) Level 2 NVQ PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT University: Anatomy - A* Physiology - A Clinical Practical - A* To date I have collected a wealth of functional detailed knowledge in the areas of anatomy, physiology, exercise science and sports medicine. Also with the included high focused detail in chemistry, biology and physics. Alongside this I have collect eight years of fantastic experience working in the clinical setting, working with and treating patients for sports related and other health or musculoskeletal conditions. My Master s Degree in Osteopathy (Med) is recognised and accredited by the General Osteopathic Council (GOsC), where all students who successfully complete the course will be eligible to register as osteopaths with the GOsC. Osteopathy is an established and recognised system of diagnosis and treatment which places emphasis on the structural integrity of the body. It recognises that much of the pain and disability we suffer stems from abnormalities in the structure of the body, resulting in disturbed function. Osteopathy is a process of medical assessment and diagnosis. In addition, osteopaths assess their patients from a mechanical, functional and postural perspective. The systems of treatment used are subject to diagnoses. Osteopathic techniques aim to ensure that there is adequate flow of blood to all tissues and organ systems, to remove strains and tensions within the muscles, and to promote good movement

through joint complexes. During clinical education I am fully immersed in the complexities of clinical practice with a very supportive learning environment with excellent teaching facilities and learning resources including purpose-built clinics, which offer diagnoses and treatment general public. Practicing Profession: 4,261 Osteopaths are currently registered in the UK with the General Osteopathic Council. Those practising in the UK carry out more than seven million consultations every year, making around 30,000 consultations every working day. Of those consultations, 54% of new patients are seen within one working day of contacting the osteopath and 95% are seen within one week. Further information can be seen at: During my five years training to become an Osteopath, I have gained huge amounts knowledge in the areas of anatomy, physiology, orthopaedics, neuroscience, pathology, pathophysiology, neuropathology, and many more in the areas of clinical medicine which are detailed in the course description below. Also during the course is a huge amount of clinical practice (1,500hours) to which I practice the skills I have gained in private medical clinic on patients with varied medical conditions (more so neuro-musculoskeletal). This process is very specific in which it is carried out, example being: 1) Meeting and great the patient then take a detailed case history of the presenting complaint 2) Present the case to the clinical tutors, and then decide on possible differential diagnoses 3) Performing a detailed clinical examination including; physical, cardiorespiratory, neurological and full orthopaedic examinations 4) Present your clinical findings and give a working diagnosis (based on examination, finding tissue causing symptoms and reasoning. Also lifestyle, psychology and environmental predisposing factors 5) Initial form of treatment and treatment plan. This with full regard to culture and diversity Course content: Taught by physiologists, neuroscientists and practising clinicians: *Anatomy 1 high level (Detailed total body) and dissection *Physiology 1 high level (Detailed total body) Philosophy and practice Practical 1 Clinical practice PBL (applied scientific skills with clinical practice. Building effective competence and using reflective learning) (*required knowledge of ALL muscles, bony attachments, ligaments, joint structures, nerves, blood vessel and advanced visceral structure and function) Structure in health and disease 1 Anatomy 2 (Detailed head and neck and clinically applied anatomy) and dissection Physiology 2 (Detailed cranial nerves) Advanced practical 2 Neuroscience (Detailed neuro-anatomy and neurophysiology) Neuropathology Clinical practice Year 3 Pathology (Structure in health and disease advanced) Dissection Pathophysiology Neuro-musculoskeletal dysfunction (and biomechanical dysfunction) Clinical Medicine * Clinical pharmacology

Advanced practical 3 Clinical methods and examination (abdominal, cardiology, pulmonary, cranial nerves, neurological examinations involving equipment) Clinical practice (advanced) Years 4 and 5 These years are in level clinical practice with live patient interactions (1,000hours) in preparation for OCPA examination which is an upgraded variation of the OSCE s completed in the first 3 years. This will also involve the progressive phase of dealing with clinical uncertainty, along with image reading. Achieving progressive development of clinical competence is the central focus of the teaching and learning strategies of the course. Also use of dissection, writing to and setting up networks with GP s and other allied healthcare professions best patient care/treatment approach. Lectures will be more focused on areas of advanced paediatrics, pregnancy and many more. *CLINICAL MEDICINE studied (Including: DETAILED signs and symptoms, pathology, pathogenesis, aetiology and treatment. Master s Degree and Research Experience: One of two degree are awarded: Bachelor of Osteopathy (Hons) (B.Ost) or the Master of Osteopathy (M.Ost). The M.Ost is an option designed for those who wish to achieve an enhanced competence profile in Clinical Research and within specific specialist areas of osteopathic clinical practice such as sports medicine. This is a process of continuation of advanced research methods on top of the normal course programme (B.Ost) finishing at the same time. After achieving the desired amount in my third year I then went over to the M.Ost programme. The literature involved was on the neurological correlation between the upper cervical spine and the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) kinematics. This was an extensive piece of Research of 25,000 words. I have also became part of a project at the University of Oxford s department of functional neurosurgery, where Dr Ned Jenkinson was looking at motor learning with transcranial magnetic stimulation. This was a fascinating project, in which I would also like to incorporate into what I have developed and use it to the benefit of helping and assisting others in my area of practice. My research: Despite the current knowledge base of the interrelationship between the TMJ and the cervical spine, limited treatment modalities are used due to lack of evidence based practice. I have been extensively looking into the overlap between the neurophysiological and structural relationship between the upper cervical spine and the afferent input onto the trigeminal sub-nucleus caudalis nociceptive and non-nociceptive neurons, in which extend to the C2 cervical spine segment. This has proved that there is a strong neurological correlation between what links the two structures, this along with the innervation of the trigeminal nerve. It is thought that this overlap could have the possibility of developing silent functional disorders of the cervical spine in patients with TMJ dysfunction, therefore backing up the hypothesis that cervical spine treatment may have positive impacts on improving TMJ dysfunction. I carried out a pilot study, looking at the correlation between the upper cervical spine and the TMJ. This was by performing a clinical intervention of segmental mobilisation to the cervical spine and seeing whether this had a positive effect on increasing the range of motion of the TMJ with joint dysfunction. The purpose of this project was to investigation by using video motion analysis, whether the direct functional and physiological link does or does not exists and whether treatment of the cervical can be of benefit to TMJ suffers. This consequently giving further evidence to the current knowledge and provide increased methods of treatment modalities for TMJ dysfunction. A full randomised control trail (RTC) was conducted in order to gain results that hold statistical significance and could provide evidence for this treatment approach if the size of the effect is deemed clinically important. This may improve the existing literature and provide evidence for a treatment modality that could potentially have benefits to people with TMJ dysfunction or could be used in conjunction with a variety of different approaches in order to provide the best patient centere care.

Research Abstract: This is yet to be finalised. Publications: The project above is hoping to be published upon finalisation.
