COLLEGE OF KINESIOLOGISTS OF ONTARIO ELECTION GUIDE CANDIDATE PROFILES This document contains information about the three (3) OATA Members up for election to the CKO Council.

INTRODUCTION The College of Kinesiologists will be conducting elections to its Council between 12:01 a.m. on Tuesday, July 12 and 11:59 p.m. on Wednesday, July 13. There are three passionate ATs, who are registered with the CKO, running for election to the Council who need the help of other registered ATs in their respective Districts. If you are registered with the CKO and practise or reside in either District 1, 4 or 5, we encourage you to vote for your colleague. You are only permitted to vote once. Any OATA Member whose application has been approved by the College and who meets the CKO s eligibility requirements may vote in the election. However, you are only eligible to vote in the electoral district in which you primarily practise. If you are not practising, you are eligible to vote in the electoral district in which you primarily reside. You are only eligible to cast one vote for a Candidate in your District. The full election process and eligibility requirements can be found in section 10 of the College By-Laws accessible through the CKO website HERE. You should already have been contacted by the CKO if eligible to vote. Mark July 12 or 13 in your calendar. Check the Candidate in your District. Note the name of the AT candidate and support that candidate with your vote. It s important! Thank you Sarah Rabinovitch, RMT, R.Kin, CAT(C) OATA Director, District Liaison and Chair of CATA-OATA Liaison Committee Drew Laskoski, R.Kin, Athletic Therapist, CAT(C) OATA President, Chair of Best Practices & MTBi Committee Nancy Harvey, R.Kin, CAT(C) OATA Chair, Chair of Governance & Nominations Committee 1

DISTRICT 1: NORTHERN OATA CANDIDATE: Michelle Young, R.Kin, CAT(C) ABOUT ME: Michelle graduated from the Bachelor of Applied Health Science - Athletic Therapy program at Sheridan College and became a Certified Athletic Therapist in She currently works for the Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services Branch of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry as a Health and Wellness Specialist where she has developed and implemented a wildland firefighter fitness program aimed at reducing musculoskeletal injuries. In this position she also conducts research in partnership with Laurentian University's Centre for Research in Occupational Health and Safety focused on wildland firefighter health and safety. In 2015, Michelle started her own part-time Athletic Therapy practice and volunteered as a Medical Practitioner for the Equestrian and Shooting Events at the 2015 Pan Am Games. CANDIDACY STATEMENT: What does it mean for a health care professional to practise in the public s best interest? As regulated health professionals, it is a commitment each of us makes. Self-regulation is a privilege and a duty. To me, practising as an R.Kin registrant of the CKO means ensuring those I serve and treat are fully aware of their condition(s), the assessment findings, the rehab program being recommended, the treatment milestones and their own role in recovery and achieving mutually-agreed set outcomes. It s a promise and it s a permission-based treatment approach. I am an evidenced-based practitioner. I love the art and science of rehabilitation and musculoskeletal injury assessments. I also recognize the importance of communication and of research to delivering effective health care. Practising and serving the public interest is inherent in practising to high quality standards. I understand the extra burdens of being a Northerner and the issues of demand and access to treatment. I have been a Provincial Lead for three years of the Commit To Be Fit forest firefighter fitness program and involved in collaborative research with the Centre for Research in Occupational Safety and Health. I have worked in multi-disciplinary rehab teams and I love working and volunteering with varsity sports (men s rugby & women s hockey) and on major games such as the recent Pan Am Parapan 2015 Games (Equestrian and Shooting Events). I keep my First Responder and CPR-HCP certifications current. I practise ready to serve. I am running for election to the CKO Council to bring my skills, knowledge, ethics and integrity to honouring the College and Council s mandate. I would like to serve on the Patient Relations Committee. I would meet any and all requirements the duties of a professional Council Member. 2

Elwin is currently the Medical Manager for the 2017 Invictus Games. His previous sport management experience includes being a Medical Venue Manager for the Toronto 2015 Pan Am/Parapanam Games Organizing Committee, the Medical Director of the 2004 and 2013 PAHF Men s Pan American Cups and the 2016 PAHF Jr. Men s Pan Am Championship (PAHF - Pan American Hockey Federation) as well as several Field Hockey Canada National Championships. Elwin is currently the Medical Lead for Field Hockey Canada s Indoor National Team Program and has been the team therapist for the Canadian Men s Indoor National Field Hockey Team for 15 years. In this time he has been with the team to 3 PAHF Indoor Pan American Cups, 3 FIH Indoor World Cups, the 2005 World Games and numerous other tournaments. Elwin was the athletic therapist for the Canadian Jr. Men s Field Hockey Team at the 2014 Youth Olympic Games in China where they won the silver medal. Elwin has also been a member of the medical team at two Canada Summer Games. CANDIDACY STATEMENT: I have over 15 years of experience in people, project and event management in high performance and international sports. My administration and strategic project management experience include being a Medical Venue Manager for the Toronto 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games Organizing Committee (TO2015) where I was extensively involved in the development of the entire medical services plan for the Toronto 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games. This included the development of the Games medical policies and procedures, the development and delivery of the medical volunteer training program and all of the many administrative processes involved. I have also been the Medical Director of two Pan American Field Hockey Cups (Pan Amercian Hockey Federation). I have been an Athletic Therapist with Field Hockey Canada for 15 years and I am currently the Medical Lead for Field Hockey Canada s Indoor National Team Program where I oversee the health and wellbeing of all the athletes in the men s and women s junior and senior indoor national programs. I would like to use my many years of project management and administrative experience to help continue to move our professional forward in the public interest and I thank everyone for their support. 3

DISTRICT 5: CENTRAL WEST OATA Candidate: Nicole DiFilippo, R. Kin, CAT(C), MSc. ABOUT ME: Nicole is a Certified Athletic Therapist with extensive experience in field and clinical environments taking on roles that include working with high performance sport, teaching and clinical management. A clinical supervisor of the Sheridan Athletic Therapy Clinic, Nicole is also a parttime faculty member, teaching within Bachelor of Applied Health Sciences (Athletic Therapy) program. She has been an AT for the Canadian Senior Men s National Water Polo Team since 2011, travelling with the team across Europe and North America. She has participated as host medical for the 2013 PAHF Men s Pan American Cup and the 2016 PAHF Jr. Men s Pan Am Championship (PAHF - Pan American Hockey Federation). In 2015, Nicole lead an eclectic team of healthcare practitioners at the international level as one of the Lead Medical Practitioners for the PanAm Games during the Water Polo event. Nicole also volunteers, participating as a Supervisory AT for Certification Candidates and as a CATA clinical examiner & model. She has recently completed her Master of Science and has been published in the Canadian Journal of Kinesiology. CANDIDACY STATEMENT: My career spans academic research, clinical practice and major games experience volunteering recently on the PanAm Games in Toronto. I practice to the highest quality standards in the public s best interest. My international experience, over the past 5-6 years, has been with Senior Men s National Water Polo teams. My local volunteering has been related to basketball and soccer. I am a life-long, constant learner always looking for ways to expand knowledge, skills and the ability to anticipate and track rehab and sport injury trends with the goal of best serving people who understand the importance of health in motion. Putting my name forward in this District 5, 2016 Election is both an honour and for me, a duty. We are entering a special time in the history of the CKO building the College s capacity through expansion from recent registration of AT/Kins and in the College s current study of specialties. I would be pleased to serve the College and to help it serve the public by participating on the Patient Relations Committee, the Quality Assurance Committee or the Fitness to Practice Committee. I would also be interested, as a past certification examiner, to serve the College on its non-statutory Examination or Examination Appeals committees. As a R.Kin and CAT(C), with past experience in organizational governance, I believe I am a sound candidate to serve on the Council representing District 5 at this important time for the CKO. 4
