2 Delegate Greeting The Ontario Society for Health and Fitness (OSHF) is pleased to welcome you to Knowledge into Practice: Considerations for the Exercise Professional, our 6th Annual Conference and Professional Development Day. The keystone of the OSHF mandate is to advocate the importance of physical activity in maintaining health, managing disease, and improving quality of life. Our Annual Conference plays a key part in this mission. Through continuing education events, the OSHF offers practitioners an opportunity to network, learn, and ultimately make a greater impact on the well-being of Ontarians. The focus of the 2013 Conference is knowledge translation to evidence-based practice. Delegates will be provided with sound practical guidelines that address fundamental and timely issues in health- and performance-related fitness. Session topics include physical activity and aging, current nutrition trends, and musculoskeletal concerns for exercisers. The Ontario Society for Health and Fitness extends sincere thanks to its members and associates in the physical activity community. 3 Knowledge into Practice: Considerations for the Exercise Professional Ontario Society for Health and Fitness 2013 Annual Conference Saturday, November 2nd 2013 Thornhill, Ontario Le Parc Conference & Banquet Centre Agenda
4 Event Overview 8:30am-9:30am Registration 9:30am-10:45am Welcome - Board of Directors Emerging Trends in Nutrition: Gluten-free, Paleo, High Fat-Low Carb, Oh My! Jennifer Sygo Are your clients asking about Wheat Belly or Paleo diets, or considering high fat, very low carb diets to lose weight or reverse disease? In this engaging and informative talk, Jennifer will offer a critical appraisal of the claims, beliefs, and evidence base for each of these diet patterns. She will also offer a perspective on the strengths and limitations of each diet, as well as practical concepts can be taken from each. Time will be allowed for questions. 10:45am-11:00am Break 11:00am-12:00pm Older Adult Physical Activity Guidelines and Notes on Exercise Prescription Donald H. Paterson Epidemiological research and exercise training studies will be synthesized to provide the evidence for recommendations of the dose of physical activity for older adults to achieve the outcomes ( response ) of reduced risk of chronic diseases and, importantly, postponement of disability and maintenance of functional abilities and independence. The studies reveal a 30% reduction in risk (for outcomes of morbidity and of function) with 150 min/wk (in bouts of at least 10 min) of moderate physical activity (e.g., brisk exercise walking) and a 60% risk reduction with more and vigorous exercise and improved cardiorespiratory fitness. Functional outcomes are enhanced when supplemented with strength exercises. 12:00pm-1:00pm Lunch 1:00pm-2:00pm (concurrent sessions) A is for Athleticism: Footsteps to Fitness & Sport Kelly Lockwood Current trends in youth sport have seen explosive growth of highly selective, highly competitive sport training facilities and programs. This presentation will compare and contrast the fundamentals of fitness, skill learning, and sport-specific training methodologies. How might personal trainers work towards adopting practices that are built upon the concept of innovative conservatism rather than dismissing the foundations of fitness for in vogue training practices marketed through sport.
5 Event Overview cntd Living & Thriving with Chronic Disease: Considerations for the Exercise Professional Valerie Skeffington Chronic Diseases such as Cardiovascular Disease, Diabetes and Cancer are prevalent throughout Canadian society. Chronic Disease management assists patients/clients with understanding the unique anatomy and physiology of their diagnosis and provides patient/clients with the tools for lifelong behaviour change strategies in order to support their self-management and ability to thrive with Chronic Disease. As health and fitness professionals, it is our responsibility to train these people to be their best-self, to prescribe exercise to their ability, improve their functional capacity and to encourage and motivate them to thrive with their chronic disease. Working with the well-established Cardiac Rehabilitation model, a model of care and planning for patient/client centred care to assist people to go beyond living but to thriving will be presented to support the Health and Fitness professional in their interactions and training for this incredibly vibrant population. 2:00pm-2:15pm Break 2:15pm-3:15pm (concurrent sessions) Common Musculoskeletal Injuries: How to recognize them and what to do about them Kelly Parr Individuals who are trying to maintain a healthy lifestyle by participating in either organized sports or fitness programs are susceptible to many overuse injuries. This presentation will include a brief overview of common causes and pain patterns for overuse knee, low back and shoulder injuries. Exercise modification and when to refer your client will also be discussed. Physiological testing and training for endurance sport performance Zach Weston This presentation will focus on fitness vs technique and how they can each be measured through physiological tests such as VO2max. This presentation will utilize both research evidence based studies as well as case studies from our clinic. The attendees will gain an appreciation of identifying barriers to progress in endurance athletes and specifically learning which element of training focus their individual athletes need to improve in an applied clinical context. 3:15pm-3:45pm OSHF Annual Meeting of Members Closing Address Board of Directors
