3 3 of 10 Equipment to be Tested: Chosen Transducer/Receiver for TekPoint s Ice Thickness Measuring Device Test Summary: This test will verify the design and function of the chosen ultrasonic transducer/receiver for TekPoint s Ice Thickness Measuring Device The device will be coupled with an ice coupon. Generated thickness values will be recorded and compared with actual ice thickness measurements. Testing Objectives: Verify the design and function of the Ice Thickness Measuring Device s Transducer Equipment Required for Test Ultrasonic Transducer/Receiver Digital-to-analog Converter (DAC) Analog-to-digital Converter (ADC) Peripheral Interface Controller (PIC) Signal Conditioner Computer Power Supply Connecting Cables/Wires Ice Coupon Testing Stand Testing Basin Salt Water Solution Preconditions of Test: Peripheral Interface Controller is to be programmed Ice coupons have been cut to have uniform thicknesses of 2, 4, and 6
4 4 of Background Ultrasonic transducer/receivers work by producing and interpreting echoes from sound waves. Ultrasonic transducers generate high frequency sound waves and evaluate the echo which is received by the receiver. When initiated a digital signal is sent from the PIC to the DAC and then to the transducer which will produce a sound wave. The reflection of the sound wave is identified by the receiver which sends a signal through the Signal Conditioner then ADC and back to the PIC. The PIC calculates the time interval between sending the signal and receiving the echo to determine the distance to an object or interface. During measurement of ice thickness a portion of the initial sound wave will be reflected when the ice/air or ice/water interface is encountered. 2.0 Introduction This document defines the test procedure for evaluating the operation of a chosen transducer/receiver when used to measure ice thickness. 3.0 Ice/Air Interface Test 3.1 Assembly 1 Connect all electrical components accordingly. Refer to Figure Ice/Air Interface 1 Place and center a 2 ice coupon on the testing stand. Refer to Figure 2. 2 Spray the ice coupons surface with the salt water solution 3 Place the chosen transducer/receiver in the center of the ice coupon 4 Execute ice thickness measurement 5 Remove transducer/receiver from ice coupon 6 Remove ice coupon from testing stand 7 Collect data from PIC 8 Record collected data in Table 1

Refer to Figure 1 2 Fill the testing basin to the indicated level with tap water Ice/Water Interface 1 Place and center a 2 ice coupon in the testing basin. Refer to Figure 3 2 Spray the ice coupons surface with the salt water solution 3 Place the chosen transducer/receiver in the center of the ice coupon 4 Execute ice thickness measurement 5 Remove transducer/receiver from ice coupon 6 Remove ice coupon from testing basin 7 Collect data from PIC 8 Record collected data in Table Ice/Water Interface 1 Place and center a 2 ice coupon in the testing basin. Refer to Figure 3 2 Repeat steps 2 through 8 in section Ice/Water Interface 1 Place and center a 2 ice coupon in the testing basin. Refer to Figure 3 2 Repeat steps 2 through 8 in section 4.2

10 10 of Recommendations and Conclusions This test should provide a sufficient amount of data to determine weather or not the chosen transducer/receiver is suitable for measuring ice thickness. Most electrical components have been selected according to transducer/receiver type. PIC programming has also been created based on transducer type. Data collected from the success or failure of testing a transducer/receiver should not solely be used to evaluate transducer/receiver operation. Data collected from the test, and observations made during testing, can aid in determining better PIC programming and electrical circuit arrangement. This procedure will also provide basic insight into how the prototype will operate and what changes could be made to further improve our concept.
