2 MSK ULTRASOUND BASICS COURSES - Learning Objectives MSK Ultrasound Basic Physics, Knobology, and Ergonomics Describe the basic physics and principles that are used in obtaining an ultrasound image Understand how different transducers are used to image superficial and deep structures Identify the optimal set up and positioning to conduct an US exam The Shoulder: Normal Anatomy as Seen with Ultrasound Be able to identify the ultrasound images of normal structures of the shoulder including : the rotator cuff tendons, the acromioclavicular joint, the subacroimial-subdeltoid bursa and the glenoid labrum Become familiar with the long axis and short axis appearance of the rotator cuff tendons Shoulder Scanning Lab: Normal Anatomy and Artifacts Be able to identify the tendons that insert into the greater and lesser tuberosity of the humerus Demonstrate the dynamic evaluation utilized to document shoulder impingement and biceps tendon subluxation Understand the how patient arm position and transducer placement are utilized to optimize an ultrasound image in the shoulder Elbow and Wrist Sonographic Examination Demonstration Understand the placement of the transducer to identify common structures in the elbow Understand the placement of the transducer to identify common structures of the wrist and hand Elbow & Wrist Scanning Lab: Normal Anatomy and Artifacts Demonstrate how to perform a systematic MSK US examination of the elbow. Identify the following structures: 1. lateral elbow: common extensor tendon, radial head, lateral epicondyle. 2. medial elbow: medial collateral ligament, common flexor tendon, medial epicondyle, ulnar nerve; 3. anterior elbow: biceps tendon, median nerve, anterior joint recess. 4. posterior elbow: triceps tendon, olecranon, posterior recess of the elbow Demonstrate how to perform systemic MSK US evaluation of the wrist and hand Identify the six dorsal compartments of the wrist and explain the importance of lister s tubercle as a landmark Demonstrate the anatomical boundaries and contents of the carpal tunnel as visualized in the short axis using MSK ultrasound Recognize the finger flexor pulleys as seen with MSK ultrasound
3 MSK ULTRASOUND BASICS COURSES - Learning Objectives ( ) Imaging Conventions, Tissue Differentiation, and Artifacts Be able to utilize conventional terminology to describe an ultrasound image. Comprehend the different and unique echotextures of muscle, tendon, bone, ligament, and nerve Identify common artifacts that can occur with US imaging and how to correct them Demonstrate how to manipulate the frequency, gain, depth and focal zone to optimize an ultrasound image Shoulder Sonographic Examination Demonstration Demonstrate the systematic protocol utilized for performing an MSK ultrasound exam of the shoulder Be able to describe the optimal position of the ultrasound transducer to scan the rotator cuff tendons and biceps tendon in the shoulder Understand how tendon aniostropy can be avoided by proper scanning technique The Elbow and Wrist: Normal Anatomy as Seen with Ultrasound Be able to recognize the ultrasound appearance of the normal structures of the elbow and wrist. (Tendons, nerves, joint space and ligaments) Understand the use of long axis and short axis views to demonstrate normal anatomy of the elbow, wrist and hand The Lower Limbs Be able to identify the ultrasound anatomy of the anterior, medial, lateral and posterior hip joint Understand the use of bone acoustic landmarks and surface anatomy to identify key structures in the hip, knee and foot/ankle region Demonstrate the normal ultrasound anatomy of the knee joint including the extensor mechanism, the lateral joint space, the medial joint space, and the popliteal fossa Be able to recognize the ultrasound appearance of the anterior ankle joint space, the peroneal tendons, the lateral ankle ligaments, the plantar fascia, the Achilles tendon and medial ankle joint complex ( posterior tibial tendon and neurovascular bundle)
