20 RESEARCH SPORT La Trobe s research in human movement and sport science has received the highest possible rating of 5 (well above world standard) in the last three Excellence in Research for Australia assessments. Sport, exercise and rehabilitation is one of five key areas of research at La Trobe. Our research is helping elite athletes improve their performance, changing sport management practices, informing government policies, and helping Australians live longer and stronger by combating inactivity, chronic disease and movement disorders RESEARCH COLLABORATIONS AND OUTCOMES We re working with industry partners, government organisations and agencies, and national and international sport organisations in cross-disciplinary research projects that are benefiting all Australians. We have: partnered with PEAK Australia to develop a prototype shoe to improve balance among older people and reduce the risk of falls worked with VicHealth to investigate the prevalence and impact of alcohol and fast food advertising during sport broadcasts. Our research has helped raise awareness and concern among health specialists worked with Sport and Recreation Victoria to develop a website and free resource guide for volunteers and staff who provide sport and recreation experiences for people with disabilities. We re also collaborating with the Australian Defence Force (ADF) to investigate the effectiveness of foot orthoses in the prevention of shin splints for ADF recruits. THE ROLE OF SPORTING CLUBS IN INFLUENCING HEALTHY EATING BEHAVIOURS Agencies like VicHealth, the Heart Foundation and the Anti-Cancer Council often use sports clubs as part of health promotion campaigns to raise awareness of skin cancer, reduce tobacco and alcohol consumption, and/or encourage healthy eating. But what is the capacity of sport clubs to effectively engage in these campaigns and how do club members feel about campaigns designed to influence positive behavioural change? La Trobe s Professor Russell Hoye and Dr Regina Belski analysed current policies and club support elements, and the attitudes and behaviour of members, to uncover significant barriers to implementing recommended healthy eating practices in sports clubs. The next step in this long-term project will be to work with clubs to develop realistic healthy eating initiatives. Listen to Professor Hoye and Dr Belski s podcast on diet and sport performance in our Sport Unpacked itunes series. 18 La Trobe University Sport Guide 2017

21 Matthew Spangher completing strength tests in the Gait Lab PREVENTING RECURRING KNEE INJURIES IN ATHLETES In the largest Australian study of its kind, Dr Kate Webster has found that one in three people under 20 who have ruptured their anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) will have another similar injury within five years. Dr Webster s research investigates the causes of this recurrence and aims to improve recovery from ACL reconstructions. Listen to an interview with Dr Webster in our Sport Unpacked series on itunes or find out more: latrobe.edu.au/sport/research AFL COACHES AND WORK STRESS Dr Mandy Ruddock-Hudson is investigating the causes, prevalence and impact of occupational stress among AFL coaches. The first part of Dr Ruddock-Hudson s research found that assistant coaches, often ex-players with a passionate love of the game, worked an average of 70 hours a week in season. They usually have less job security than senior coaches with little of the compensating public recognition. Almost all of them (98%) reported experiencing high psychological distress during the season and more than a third said that they suffered emotional exhaustion. The next phase of Dr Ruddock-Hudson s research will investigate senior coaches in the AFL. Listen to an interview with Dr Ruddock-Hudson and AFL coach, Mr Michael Malthouse in our Sport Unpacked series on itunes. IMPROVING HIP STABILISER MUSCLE STRENGTH IN ATHLETES AND OSTEOARTHRITIC PATIENTS The pathology of the muscles that stabilise the hip joint is a major concern to sports people (e.g. hamstring injuries) and those suffering from hip osteoarthritis. La Trobe s Dr Rob Green and his team were the first researchers in the world to record signals from deep hip stabiliser muscles key contributors to the health of hip joints. A team of anatomists, exercise physiologists, physiotherapists and occupational therapists is now working together to identify the best types of exercise for the deep hip stabilizer muscles and design arehabilitation program targeted at sporting and pathological populations. Dr Green s research could not only reduce the occurrence of hip and lower limb sports injuries, but also improve the performance of elite athletes and the quality of life of people suffering hip osteoarthritis. 22 SPORT PARTNERSHIPS At La Trobe University, we are proud of our partnerships with international, national and local sport organisations. We align ourselves with partners who share our values and can work with us on meaningful educational, research, social and community outcomes through sport. Through our partnerships we are able to provide unique student and staff experiences, collaborate with industry partners on worldclass research, and deliver real outcomes for the community. Central to our partnerships is the delivery of beneficial outcomes for our students, including exclusive internship opportunities and unique work experiences to enhance students employability, participation in real-world research projects, and access to industry-based lecturers and guest speakers. It is also important for us to work with organisations that represent sport from grassroots to elite and professional levels, ensuring our sport knowledge, expertise, and impact covers the broad spectrum of sport. Our current partners are reflective of our goals and this ambition. MELBOURNE CITY FC In partnership for over 5 years, La Trobe and City Football Club have achieved many milestones together; the first being the establishment of City s premier home base and FIFA-standard training ground at La Trobe s in Bundoora. This co-location provides the University s students and staff direct access to a world class sport facility and a professional sports team, and unique exposure to a global sport network. The relationship between the two organisations is truly integrated including collaborative research projects, student experiences with the Club, membership benefits for the La Trobe community, and much more. The impact of the partnership is broad and best evidenced by the stories of lives it has made a difference to, including Callum Muirhead (see page opposite). City is very proud of its longstanding and meaningful partnership with La Trobe University. Our relationship is vitally important because of the impact we can have together on enriching student experiences and providing pathways into the sports industry. AFL PLAYERS ASSOCIATION (AFLPA) La Trobe University is the AFLPA s exclusive Higher Education partner, which sees the University present the esteemed Education and Training Award at the annual MVP Awards. Since its launch in 2013 the partnership has seen a number of highlights, including working together on significant research projects in coaching, physiotherapy, psychology, exercise physiology, journalism, management, and nutrition, demonstrating the great breadth of sport courses and research expertise available at the University. Importantly the partnership also provides exclusive internships, tailored sport symposiums, and access to industry experts from on and off the field, that provide unique insights into and exposure to sports careers. La Trobe also supports players with direct pathways into degree courses and access to our Elite Athlete Program. 23 Craig Staunton performing sports science testing with Bendigo Spirit player BENDIGO SPIRIT BENEFITS FROM LA TROBE PHD INSIGHTS We ve been a proud major partner with the Bendigo Spirit since The Spirit is the only regional team in Australia s Women s National Basketball League (WNBL). Our physiotherapy and event management students take part in work placements with the Spirit during the season, and the Spirit s players study with us. In addition, our physical education and exercise science students work with Bendigo Spirit players carrying out fitness testing and pre-competition testing and monitoring. La Trobe PhD candidate Craig Staunton is helping the Spirit take their game to new heights as their strength and conditioning coach Craig Staunton, an exercise and sports physiology PhD candidate and the strength and conditioning coach for the Bendigo Bank Spirit, has been collecting and analysing data from tracking devices known as accelerometers. The accelerometers are worn by the athletes to calculate the number of sudden changes in their movement and measure how intensive they are. By measuring the intensity of a player s jumping, sprinting and shuffling from side to side, we can calculate an athlete s training load, says Mr Staunton. The data that Mr Staunton collects is analysed and presented to coaching staff to show how hard a player trains each week. Callum Muirhead Bachelor of Business (Sport Management) Callum started a work placement at City FC (then Heart FC) while studying a Bachelor of Business (Sport Management) at La Trobe. He graduated in 2012 and was subsequently offered a job with the Club s youth team (16 to 21 year olds). A year later, Callum was made Team Manager of the A-League team and then Football Operations Coordinator at City FC where he now works closely with coaching staff to manage the team s travel, training schedules and kits, and player appearances. He also manages the National Youth League and National Premier League teams. Bendigo Spirit s General Manager Adam Tarr says that the appointment was made possible through a partnership between the team and the University, and that it has been a win-win situation for both parties which I hope can continue long into the future. Australian Opals star Rebecca Allen As an Australian Opals basketballer looking to represent our country at the Rio Olympics and whilst also playing professionally for New York Liberty in the WNBA, being at a university that understands the unique demands of high level sport is important to me. It was invaluable for me having the right people at La Trobe to help me transition to part time study to continue my degree. It s important to me to be able to continue studying whilst pursuing my sporting dreams. Being at La Trobe has meant that I haven t had to make a choice. When time permits, my goal is to complete the Masters of Audiology and I know that I will be supported. Choosing to continue his study with a Maters of Management (Sport Management) at La Trobe, Matt credits his decision to the flexibility of the University. I chose to study at La Trobe because they are very understanding of the commitments of professional athletes. The lecturers and coordinators have often gone out of their way to assist me in completing my studies. La Trobe has easily been the most accommodating institution that I have dealt with. The commitments surrounding AFL are often very demanding and are not very flexible. The lecturers and the coordinators have worked with me to map out a program that works for all parties. The balance of study and football has made an enormous contribution to my own wellbeing and sense of achievement. Footy doesn t last forever, and you need to take advantage of the time you have in the game, both on and off the field. La Trobe University Sport Guide
