5 Statistics by Christina M. Christie PT, CCE, It has been estimated that between million Americans have some form of pelvic floor dysfunction. One in three women suffer with some form of pelvic floor dysfunction. Pelvic floor disorders can be devastating to the quality of life...leading to social embarrassment, depression, lack of self esteem and even isolation. Fewer than half of all women with incontinence seek medical help. Most commonly performed episiotomies in North America are midline episiotomies. This means cutting right into the perineal body...this may have severe consequences for the integrity of the wall between the vagina and the rectum % of women develop nerve injuries during childbirth. Forceps & Vacuum extraction delivery can cause pelvic floor damage. 36% of women over the age of 45 have some form of pelvic floor dysfunction. 60% of all people in nursing homes have some form of pelvic floor dysfunction

10 The Three Planes and why we need to know them Sagittal is anterior and posterior of the body. This plane is affected by gravity For example when you walk your ankle dorsi flexes and the calf lengthens. Frontal this plane is either right lateral or left lateral of the body or abduction or adduction. This plane is affected by gravity. For example when you laterally flex to the right the left side lengthens Transverse this plane when it is only pure rotation is not affected by gravity and needs

19 What Happens to the Pelvis and Pelvic Floor During Pregnancy? Increase in hormones leads to laxity of the connective tissue, ligaments, tendons and joins. Postural changes include: Increased lumbar lordosis, shift of the center of gravity towards an anterior position. Increased thoracic kyphosis. Rounded shoulders Increased forward head. Lowering of the longitudinal arch in the foot. Dormant butt syndrome. Hyperextension at the knees. Pelvic floor muscle laxity/ pressure Rectus Diastisis.
20 Females Athletes: Variation and fluctuation in systemic tone and stability via Estrogen/ Progestrone. Reliance on gravity and ground reaction forces (Quad dominance). Transverse plane hip loading deficiency with increase chance for valgus stress injuries. Gender differences in knee abduction during execution and ready position. Suggests altered muscle control/ contraction patterns of adductors and abductors of the hip and knee.
