Research Support. (Ongoing research projects) 90DP (Ding) 10/01/13 09/29/ Calendar Months Admin for Community Living (ACL) Yearly Directs: $322,624 Co-I Self-Management Assistance through Technology (SMART) Virtual Coaches for Wheelchair Users We propose a 5-year development project that focuses on educating an important but often neglected group wheelchair users. The project aims to improve health and functional outcomes of wheelchair users by increasing their knowledge of appropriate wheelchair use and their role in the wheelchair service delivery process, and providing supportive technologies to assist them in leading a healthy lifestyle (Dicianno PI) 04/01/15 04/30/ Calendar Months Craig H. Neilsen Foundation Yearly Directs: $28,507 Co-I Telewellness Support Systems for Spinal Cord Injury We propose that the imhere group will have improved psychosocial and medical outcomes compared to the standard of care only group. We also will carry out a usability study to determine what modifications need to be made to the system for those with higher levels of impairment who have difficulty accessing a smartphone even with accessibility functions. 1U01DD (Dicianno) 09/01/14 08/31/ Calendar Months NIH Yearly Directs: $2,263 Co-I Comp B-National SB Patient Registry at the University of Pittsburgh The objective of this proposal is to continue participation of the University of Pittsburgh in the National Spina Bifida Patient Registry (NSBPR). The University of Pittsburgh has been a funded registry site since We propose a research subproject within this award that addresses three aims: 1) Describe more fully the neurological and functional classification of individuals with spina bifida, 2) Determine which additional variables contribute significantly to ambulatory and transfer ability, and 3) Develop and validate a Spina Bifida Impairment Scale that can be used to accurately quantify motor and sensory deficits in individuals with spina bifida. IPA THERESA CRYTZER 08/01/15 07/31/ Calendar Months Department of Veterans Affairs Yearly Directs: $11,480 IPA Theresa Crytzer Dr. Crytzer will help with study recruitment, development of clinical protocols, monitoring and participating in study implementation, and data management for the WaRE VA Center of Excellence research projects R44HD (Koontz) 09/18/15 08/31/ Calendar Months NextHealth Inc (Prime: NIH) Yearly Directs: $149,264 Co-I Development and Evaluation of an Automated Transfer Technology
6 The goal of this project is to develop, prototype and test a new wheelchair as part of the AgileLife PTS that would accommodate bariatric individuals (e.g. over 250 lbs) and a tilt feature on both the standard (weight capacity under 250 lbs) and bariatric wheelchair models. The new designs will be iteratively developed in collaboration with the University of Pittsburgh. Eight commercial ready prototypes will be built that meet the user, technical and manufacturing requirements established by expert panel review, wheelchair standards testing, and in-lab evaluations. Clinical Trials Award #3064 Paralyzed Veterans of America Research Foundation 5/1/2016-4/30/2018 $149,781 Effect of Vibration Exercise on Upper Limb Strength, Function, and Pain Specific Aim: The primary purpose of this pilot randomized control trial is to explore the benefits of vibration dumbbell resistance training over standard dumbbell resistance training to improving upper limb strength, propulsion and transfer function and upper limb pain among manual wheelchair users. Additional Studies that I am Co-I on and assist with but do not provide salary support: Funding: VA Center; VA RR&D Merit Review; VA VISN4 CPPF Enhancement of Motor Cortex Activity in Persons with Spinal Cord Injury PI: Michael Boninger Aim is to develop a neurofeedback paradigm to facilitate activation within the motor cortex of the brain in individuals with tetraplegia using Magnetoencephalography (MEG) recording while imagining or imitating simple movements. Subjects will undergo manual muscle testing of the major joints of the upper limb. Dr. Crytzer assists with ROM and MMT and ASIA neurological classification of participants. Funding: VA Rehabilitation Research and Development Center of Excellence Quantifying distractions during functional BCI applications within a virtual environment PI: Jennifer Collinger Primary aim of this work is to study the effect of distractions on the ability to use electroencephalogram (EEG) based brain-computer interface (BCI) by testing BCI controlled virtual electrical powered wheelchair in a virtual environment to evaluate the effect of external stimuli. Study procedures include an EPW driving assessment in both real world and virtual environments. Dr. Crytzer will assist in assessing participants. American Lung Association.
