1 Whiplash Associated Disorder A guide for clinicians Roger Kerry MSc FMACP MCSP & Alan Taylor MSc MLACP MCSP This presentation will be of particular interest to physiotherapists, osteopaths, chiropractors, sports physicians & rheumatologists Speakers Alan Taylor and Roger Kerry are both physiotherapists and work at the Division of Physiotherapy Education, University of Nottingham, UK. They have been involved in developing evidence and clinical practice regarding Cervical Arterial Dysfunction for over a decade. They have over 30 international peer-reviewed papers and several book chapters related to cervical spine dysfunction and have presented at over 20 international conferences. Alan works as a medico-legal expert witness in this field, and Roger is an honorary Fellow of the Musculoskeletal Association of Chartered Physiotherapists. Roger is a co-author of the IFOMPT CAD Framework and both speakers had papers cited in the document. This evening lecture may be facilitated by one or both of these speakers. LONDON - September 18th 2013 (Wednesday) Registration: , Presentation: (there will be a short refreshment interval in the lecture) Outline Whiplash injury and whiplash associated disorder (WAD) present a particular challenge to both clinicians and researchers. This is a multi-factorial, multi-stakeholder phenomenon which is characterised by controversy and contradiction. This evening lecture attempts to cast light on this complex area by providing a focused, contemporary update of the evidence, science and best practice behind whiplash and WAD. The evening is aimed at the clinician wanting to understand the evidence and optimise their evidence-based assessment and management of this patient group. Topics covered include: Re-defining Whiplash Associated Disorder The transition and RISK of chronicity Understanding which interventions work, and which don t Sensori-motor integration approach to WAD Advanced rehabilitation muscle training for the neck! 1st & only chance to hear this lecture in London in 2013 Learning outcomes On attending this lecture, you will be able to: 1. 2 Clinical Reasoning within The Spine Dr Neil Langridge DClinP MMACP MSc (Manip Ther) MCSP This presentation will be of particular interest to doctors, physiotherapists, osteopaths, chiropractors and sports rehab professionals PLACES LIMITED Speaker Neil is a consultant physiotherapist with a special interest in spinal function. He has worked in the NHS, private sector and NHS and treats complex spinal patients as well as working in a spinal triage environment. He completed his MACP training in 2002 and his MSc in He has presented all over the U.K and abroad whilst leading manual therapy sessions at a number of Universities. Currently completing his Doctoral studies at the University of Southampton has seen his research interests focus on clinical reasoning and low back pain. Speaker Mike is the founder and Performance Director of Sport Dimensions and the Running School, specialising in Speed Coaching, Movement Re-Patterning and Rehabilitation after injury or surgery. Mike has achieved an incredibly high success rate utilising this unique methodology for rehabilitating injured athletes and helping them to run more efficiently and faster. This rehabilitation approach is the combination of using traditional and non-traditional neuromuscular stimulation, muscle activation and real time re-education training. Mike emphasises the primary causes of Movement Dysfunction and retraining more efficient movement patterns, and constant assessment to ensure objectives are met with each progression of the runner s rehabilitation. This methodology makes it possible for athlete s with very complex and chronic injury histories to return to running with clear goals and training tools to prevent re-injury. Mike has been a coach for 30 years and has worked in the UK, Europe and the USA. He is a qualified Football Coach, Speed Coach, Strength & Conditioning Coach and Rehabilitation Specialist. He has worked as a coach at professional level in the UK and Europe has coached hundreds of elite and young runners, triathletes and track & field athletes. Mike is a coaching consultant for a number of professional sports clubs, National Sport Federations as well as professional athletes in the UK and Europe. Clients include among others, athletes and teams from, Chelsea FC, Chelsea Academy, Bolton Wanderers, Stoke City, Crystal Palace, Ipswich Town, Arsenal, Saracens, Bath, Harlequins, Celtic, Blackburn, QPR, Professional and Recreational Triathletes Elite Track & Field athletes including World & Olympic Gold Medallists. Mike runs education courses and workshops for Coaches, Physiotherapists and Rehabilitation Specialists and has been described as one of the UK s most Innovative Coaches. 4 The Athletic Shoulder Identification of specific rehabilitation strategies Ben Ashworth MSc BSc (Hons), First Team Physiotherapist - Arsenal FC This presentation will be of particular interest to manual therapists, doctors, sports rehab professionals & strength coaches PLACES EXTREMELY LIMITED Speaker: Ben is a highly experienced musculoskeletal physiotherapist. He worked in Premiership rugby with London Wasps before taking up a role at the Olympic Medical Institute for the British Olympic Association. Ben currently works as First Team physiotherapist at Arsenal FC having previously been the Lead Physiotherapist in London for the English Institute of Sport (working with Olympic medallists from Rowing) and the Lead Physiotherapist for British Judo. Ben s exposure to elite level rugby and Olympic Judo has fuelled his specific interest in the sporting shoulder. He has recently been appointed as an Honorary lecturer at UCL where he is responsible for co-ordinating the MSc Sports Rehab module & hopes to commence his PhD. 5 Examination of the Sporting Foot & Ankle Fraser McKinney MSc MCSP Head Physiotherapist - British Basketball This presentation will be of particular interest to physiotherapists, osteopaths, chiropractors, sports physicians, rheumatologists and sports rehab professionals. Description This lecture is aimed at all practitioners involved within the assessment, rehabilitation and prevention of sporting injuries involving the foot & ankle. The lecture focuses on the two key principals, firstly the physiological mechanism and secondly the practical application behind assessment & rehabilitation of the foot & ankle. Attendee s will leave with: an understanding of the mechanisms behind common sporting injuries key principals of a global assessment of balance and local assessment of the foot & ankle application of key tests to assess clinical progression of rehabilitation and injury risk for key populations within sport. Aims & Objectives Brief review of anatomy & biomechanics in relation to common sports injuries Discussion of the common mechanisms of foot & ankle injury in Key sports (football, basketball, netball, hockey, cricket and rugby) Clinical evidence behind injury prevention Balance what is it? How do you test it? What difference does it make to injuries? how do you train it? Explanation of assessment tools available to assess athlete s clinical rehabilitation & progression and highlight use within assessment of possible injury risk Discuss the options to reduces the possible risk of injury in clinically significant groups LONDON- November 27th 2013 (Wednesday) Registration: Presentation: (light refreshments available at interval) Speaker Fraser McKinney currently works as the Head Physiotherapist for the British Basketball Olympic team. He is also completing his MSc in Sports Physiotherapy from Cardiff University with a dissertation on ankle injuries and participation on the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) corrective exercise program in the USA. Fraser has developed close associations with individuals and teams from international athletics, superleague netball, Challenge Cup rugby league, women s professional football, kayaking and professional tennis and squash. An academic interest in foot and ankle injuries in sport combined with extensive clinical physiotherapy skills across many settings has given Fraser a strong knowledge base around the topic of foot & ankle anatomy, injuries, rehabilitation and treatment interventions. Fraser has presented at the International Amateur Athletics Federation (IAAF) conference, lectured at the University of Leeds and delivered teaching seminars to professional athletes and sporting clubs. He has a growing national reputation as a sports physiotherapist with increasing recognition of his expertise in the specific area of the foot and ankle. He has written on this topic for industry publications, has been recently involved with producing a series of publications for a worldwide medical magazine and is writing up his ankle injury research for academic publication.
