4 What is Emotional Intelligence? Emotional Intelligence is a set of skills associated with monitoring one s own and others emotions, and the ability to use emotions to guide one s thinking and actions (Salovey & Mayer 1990)

5 Emotions Impact. Attention Memory Learning Relationships Physical Mental health (Salovey & Mayer 1990)

6 Emotional Intelligence begins to develop in the earliest years. All the small exchanges children have with their parents, teachers and with each other carry emotional messages. Daniel Goleman

7 Reflection: Think about the last time you felt slighted by a parent/caregivers of one of the children in your classroom, center or family child care home.

8 Ask yourself these questions How did I feel in that moment? What did I think about or say to the parent/caregiver? Did I consider what may have been going on in the other person s life before this moment? Did I consider that something that happened to me early in the day or at another time may be framing my reaction?
