Agenda Ice Breaker Understand Resiliency 10 Self-Resiliency Strategies Resources 2
Ice Breaker: Making Connections In groups of 4, Find one unique identifier and 3 commonalities. 3
What is Resiliency? the ability to bounce back from difficult or challenging life experiences an active state (not passive) Something we can train Not something we must be born with 4
1. Find Purpose Connect with TRUE self What motivates you? Nourishes you? Inspires you? Connect with others family, friends, peers Who motivates you? Inspires you? Connect with purpose faith, hobbies Do you love your work? Does the work you do align with your values? Do you feel satisfied end of day? What direction do you want your career to go in? 5
Activity 1: Meaningful You Think about: 1. 3 things you love about yourself 2. 3 things you love doing 3. 3 things you would love to learn to do 6
2. Reframe 7
Activity 2: ABCD Tool Activating event - What s stressing me out? Belief - What distorted or irrational thinking style am I using? What negative belief am I clinging to? Consequence - What am I feeling? What is my behavior as a result of my beliefs? Dispute - Counter-thought. What realistic and grounding statement can I use instead? Is there an alternative way of thinking here that is reality based? 8
Example: ABCD Tool Activating event - I have to present Belief - I am terrible at public speaking Consequence - I feel anxious, I m afraid I ll look stupid, No one will respect me Dispute - I m not really that terrible; it s never going to be perfect; I won t ever get better if I don t practice and challenge myself 9
3. Live in the Moment Take pleasure in the small joys Be more mindful Smell the roses Practice Gratitude 10
Mindfulness 11
Free SmartPhone Apps 12
4. Take Action Take ownership Take responsibility Problem Solve Seek input from others Learn from your past Focus on what s within your control Decide what choice you will make 13
90:10 Principle (Stephen Covey) 10% is determined by what happens to you 90% is determined by how you think and react 14
Choice: Reactive or Reflective? Not mindful: Stimulus Reaction Stimulus Mindfulness Pause (Choice) Respond We hold the POWER TO CHOOSE how we respond.
5. Be Kind 16
6. Stay Socially Connected Social support key indicator of Resiliency: - How well we use that support - How well we maintain that support Rely on others - pay attention to your needs - Not a sign of weakness but resourcefulness and strength - Learn from others - Recipricate - help others Relationships must be meaningful, high quality vs corrosive/toxic 17
7. Keep Learning & Growing 18
Activity 3: What s Your Mindset? Do you strongly believe that: - Intelligence can be significantly changed? - New things can be learned, but intelligence fundamentally can t be changed? Do you like your work best when: - It makes you think hard? - You can do it very well with little trouble? - You will learn from it, even with lots of mistakes? - You can do it perfectly without mistakes? When work gets really difficult, does it: - Make you want to work harder on it? - Make you feel like you might not be smart enough? 19
8. Let It Go Let go of things that control you Let go of things you can t control Let go of your ego Be imperfect Be flexible Be ready for change, anticipate change 20
9. Love Yourself Self-improvement vs self-acceptance Perfection vs excellence Embrace vulnerability and self-compassion Appreciate blessings Strive for Authenticity 21
