Z GENERATION'S EQ (EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE) DEVELOPMENT Author: Viktorija Sevelkina Presentation prepared for NORDPLUS JUNIOR PROJECT CHALLENGES TEACHING NEW Z GENERATION FINAL CONFERENCE Project no. NPJR-2016-/10026

Emotional Intelligence Emotional intelligence means a group of abilities that allow a person to sense and understand both their own emotions and the emotions of others. People with a high level of emotional intelligence are able to control their emotional sphere. Their behavior is more flexible, which means that it is easier for them to achieve their goals by interacting with other people.[1] ¹

Z Generation s EQ Recently Facebook shared theit observations on adolescent behavior in the network. Modern teenagers, according to the results of the study, have forgotten how to solve conflicts. In case of misunderstanding, they, rather, will remove a person from the list of virtual friends and stop communicating with them, rather than trying to find a solution to the problem.

The new generation has a very low level of empathy. The children forgot how to sympathize. Often they do not even realize the reality of the horrors occurring in the world around them. Computer games and news accustom them to blood and violence, but they do not realize that in reality, life is only one, and violence is far from the best way to achieve a goal. [3] ³

For the majority, the answer to the question "How do you feel?" is "Normal" (bad / good), but even more common is "I do not know! " Many teenagers are not able to distinguish their emotions, but it is even more difficult to understand what others feel in different situations.

In order to have a highly developed EQ, it is necessary: To broaden emotional dictionary; To identify precisely emotions of its own and others; To use emotions as an information resource, understanding reasons for their occurance; To direct the energy of emotions to problem-solving; By staying open-minded and flexible, manage emotions and emotions of others, integrating them into mental, analytical, managerial processes, predicting further actions. [2] ²

My Experience Subject «Professional communication» Topic «Emotions» Group ТТ-11 (Commercial Transport Worker), KS-11 (Customer Service Specialist) Time 120 min.

Goals and Tasks: EQ development. To acquaint with the basic emotions. Show a variety of emotions. Give an opportunity to explore its own emotions. Acquaintance with the emotions of classmates.

Necessary Resources Associative cards Presentation in MS PowerPoint

In the Class 1. Students choose an associative card that reflects their state "here and now" and explain why they chose this particular map. 2. The teacher gives the definition of emotions. 3. Game in groups - "Name as many emotions as possible".

4. Students reconsider their chosen associative card and name that emotion that appears in this card.

5. Showing slide with 10 main emotions. 6. The task is to take the phone and research correspondence with friends via SMS or in social networks. What smiley faces are you using more often? Do they correspond to what you see on the slide? What emoticons are used, but they are not on the slide?

Messenger Research

8. Every emotion experienced by a person can be both useful and harmful. Students are invited to think over the positive and negative aspects of such emotions as shame, anxiety, anger, interest, joy 9. The teacher talks about the functions of emotions

10. Game «Emotions» 1. Emotion, which was chosen by the majority. 2. Emotion, which was not chosen by no one. 3. Person, which has the same emotion as you. 4. Person, which has a different emotion from yours.

Discussion on the Results of the Game 11. Slide on what the demonstration of emotions depends on; 12. Slide on what EQ is.

Students Self-evaluation 1. What valuable did you find out? 2. What did you like the most in the lesson? 3. What did you dislike? 4. What was challenging? What questions did appear?

Advantages and Disadvantages of the Method All information is given in the game format. Students analyze information through their own experience. That information, which is difficult to express in words, is initially transmitted through a visual image. It takes a lot of time. Such lessons should preferably be carried out by a psychologist. It is necessary to create a trusting environment.
