2 Aus Identities An Introduction The Aus Identities program identifies innate differences between people and the way that they think, and then explains these patterns of behaviour by putting them into categories. While similar systems have been used extensively throughout the world, the Aus Identities program offers us a uniquely Australian perspective that people of all ages can easily identify with by linking these behavioural traits to the characteristics of four well known Australian native animals. This report has been designed to assist you in understanding the results of the Aus Identities Type Indicator, which we have already been through together. As you are aware, the indicator seeks to break down personalities into 4 recognizable types, based on individual answers to the 20 questions that you completed. Sometimes people ask the question, isn't this like trying to put people into boxes? The answer to that is not really. People put each other into boxes; Aus Identities on the other hand indicates which aspects of your personality you prefer to use and makes it very clear that everybody uses all aspects at some time throughout their daily life. However, an understanding of their preferences gives people enough of an insight into themselves, so that they can make better decisions regarding their future, their lifestyle, their career, or any other changes they are looking to make. Your Reported Type - The Dolphin (ENFJ) Dolphins are the most likely of the types to search for meaning in their work or their studies, even to point where they seem to derive part of their own sense of identity through what they do. They are idealistic by nature and as a result, they can often find themselves moving towards positions where they are able to address what they view as wrong in the world, especially when it comes to preserving the rights or the well being of others. They may also often adopt a less than conventional approach to life which can lead others to view them as different, alternative, or even mysterious. The Dolphins themselves simply have a deeper sense of everyone having a unique identity, with special gifts to contribute and it is part of their character to want to uncover these aspects of themselves and others. Their preferred leadership approach is in the style of the catalyst or energiser, the person others can turn to when they are seeking support for a new idea or project, or for someone to bounce their ideas off. They are big picture people, excited by the possibility of what could be and are usually excellent communicators and orators. As a result they can often make very good spokespeople where their general tendency is for talking in metaphors. Natural dreamers and harmonisers they believe that people can get along together and that moral values and profit can coexist, even in the most commercially based situations. Often graduates of the Arts or Social Sciences, they will also be found in the more creative roles within an organisation, where they can be inspired to look for new ways to make products or systems within that business of greater value and more appealing.

3 Introduction to the Jungian Personality Types ISTJ ISTP INFJ INTJ ESTJ ESTP INFP INTP ESFJ ESFP ENFP ENTP ISFJ ISFP ENFJ ENTJ The personality types first identified by Carl Jung, and later developed further by Katharine Briggs and her daughter Isabel Briggs Myers is probably the most widely recognised psychometric testing tool used with individuals and in organisations in the world today. This Personality Type theory recognises people s preferences for different ways of gathering information and for making decisions, and explains the meaning of the letters we used to identify your temperament type earlier. The eminent Swiss Psychologist Carl Gustav Jung based his book Personality Types on research and clinical study in the early 20th Century. It was later translated into English in The mother and daughter partnership of Katharine Briggs and Isabel Briggs Myers recognised Jung s Personality Types theory related to their personal research. While not psychologists themselves, they were passionate about making this theory accessible to individuals. Since the initial publication of their first personality Indicator in the 1950s, various authorised versions are now commonly used throughout the world. The word psychometric roughly translated means measurement of the mind which can be a little misleading as the Psychological Types theory related to Aus Identities does not measure intelligence. These instruments are indicators only and act like a guide, to help understand why people behave in different ways and just as importantly, what motivates individuals. Recognition of personality type supports identification of divergent learning styles and assists people with career choice and working in teams. Many organizations use personality type knowledge to improve workplace performance through improved communication, teamwork and more effective leadership. The Jungian and Myers-Briggs concepts describe the psychological essences of 16 personality types. While people will sometimes ask whether this is like putting people into boxes, it is fact the opposite. While each person is energised when they use one or two specific psychological functions, everyone can in fact consciously use all the functions. However, the less preferred of these can be more difficult to use and may take more of our energy. It is similar to most people who have difficulty writing fluently with their non-preferred hand.

4 Sensing - Data-gathering function Sensing types are not necessarily more sensible or sensitive than their Intuitive cousins, more that they have developed a preference for perceiving the world through their five senses, focusing on whatever is actually happening around them. They tend to notice more of what is going on in their immediate environment and can be much more specific when it comes to the details of matters. There are about 3 times as many people in Australia with the sensing function than there are with intuition, which is probably just as well as the they are the doers of society, attending to the more practical realities of living their lives. Of course there will be times when they are drawn into the world of possibilities and patterns with meanings, but that is not a place that entirely suits their natural orientation to life. People with sensing have a strong preference for working steadily away at a project, taking all of the necessary steps to bring it into fruition. They will support their statements with facts and details and like to take words at face value rather than give them too much meaning. As a general rule you will find Sensing types to be more: Realistic - Down to earth - Practical Observant - Steady paced - Liking of step by step instructions Wanting to know exactly what is expected of them intuition - Data-gathering function Intuitive types are not necessarily prophets, poets or philosophers, just people who prefer to perceive the world by moving quickly from sensory impressions, into possibilities, associations and symbols. They make up only about 25% of the general Australian population, with again a roughly even split between the genders. Intuitive types must first take in any information through their five senses, just like the sensing types, but then this information becomes blurred and is taken into the unconscious where it is linked together with other ideas and associations become formed. Therefore they can be very good with theories and quite adept at spotting patterns in complexity. They also become quite used to acting upon hunches and seemingly disparate pieces of information that might not make any sense to the other types. They are also able to see the big picture. The intuitive types will often work in burst of energy, spending as much time pondering matters as they do attending to them. They are usually more focused on the future and the many possibilities that it holds than they are on the present and it is because of this they are seen as the architects of change, bringing us new and revolutionary approaches to every aspect of life, from the many fields of science to the relationship between the body and the mind and even the soul. As a general rule you will find Intuiting types to be more: Idealistic - Creative - Looking for meaning Imaginative - Over-committed - Interested in the big picture Focused on future possibilities
